Group of inquiring minds. 10 April 2004. I left my house to go pay the guy at the town dump the five bucks I owed him from earlier in the day. My other car is a 87 Volvo 240dl. Same road same speed most likely less. On my way back from the dump 45mph. no rollbar, standard lap belts. Approched a right hand turn. Entered the turn and a Rather large red truck was in my lane. He never moved. To be honest I don't think he saw me. I served to the right. Front right slip into a... MORE
Okay, so I admit it. I spent way too many hours trying to get all the little springs and thingys to fit together on the right rear brake. The excuse I'm going with is that I'm following a repair guide that offers up the following for the rebuild: "reverse the steps followed in the teardown." Pithy, what? I've got to think I'm doing something in the wrong order, or missing some special tool marked with the necessary and utterly mysterious incantation of "MOWOG" cause that wasn't no walk through a sunny park. First I installed the new cylinder. Then... MORE
Thanks everyone, since I was upside down last year in my previous bugeye, I want the protection of a Roll Bar. I will most likely bolt it in considering the thickness of the floor pan. I could then weld the base at the four points of contact? Michael iver28 61 BE "Iver28" 14343... MORE
Mike.... the rollbar will be of minimal protection if it is bolted, rather than welded in, though it will stiffen the structure in either case, less in the first case, more in the last. Don't know about that particular opening in your Xmission tunnel. :( Cap'n Bob Basic Frog (with welded-in rollbar) "Robert E. Shlafer" 14338... MORE
Hi Folks, Recently my uncle passed away and I now am suddenly becoming more involved with the family farm, he was running it up until now. First thing is the barns need a massive cleanout. Neither my dad or my uncle ever threw anything away. Me either for that matter. I was there today working and I found a small stash of Spridget parts there I forgot I had. Main thing is a whole 1/4 elliptic rearend drum to drum with 4.22 gears. Springs are cut, but everything else is there. I also saw a heater blower and a... MORE
I brought one of my first Bugeye's up from Idaho in a 6 X 12 enclosed U-Haul trailor. Brought my current Bugeye up from Carlsbad, CA. on a borrowed homemade dunebuggy trailor with 4 X 4's on the top of it to hold the bugeye up high enough so it didn't sit on the fenders. Michael If you get stuck I have a Bugeye tow bar that bolts to the bumper mounting points on the frame extensions. I'm retired so could pop over most anytime and tow it home for you. Larry Miller http://www.ado13.com "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14327... MORE
Nitemare, 60-70% seem to work ok, but then there is nobody riding on the passenger side. The front tunnel carpet is being replaced as we speak. The one on the drivers floor, sucks at best, but then I'm 6'2" so kindof drag my feet (and head) getting in. I Oylwaxed the floor pans so am kindof stuck with some kind of snaps, unless I screw the carpet down. Bob, Troutdale, OR P.S. Adjusted carbs, (Arm rubbing against Jets while installing XXX.) Michael- Dixon is up by Sacramento and a bit west off Hwy 80....this will be my maiden year so I'm looking forward to the experience...As for the trailer to get the BE home, your plan to use a 14 footer sounds good...be sure you secure the rear end properly...mine came home from the paint shop w/ a good bit of paint rubbed off the rear qtr. panel because of side slipping on the trailer. ...carpet first and then the panels...that way the edges of the carpet are covered by the panels. Also, I used 3-M spray contact adhesive and it keeps the carpets tight to the floors. Small car interiors look better w/ the carpets nice and flat....(IMHO).... Doug dpecchenino@... 14296... MORE
On both cars the carpeting was installed by previous owners. Nothing under the carpets. The male part of the snaps were screwed to the floor with the female part of the snap installed on the carpet. Rick "Rick Fisk" 14294... MORE
Michael I had mine done by an automotive upholstery shop and had a 3/8" thick jute material glued to the back of all the pieces. This made the floor and footwell sections quite stiff. The jute goes to about 3/4" of the edge of the carpets. I allowed them to glue the tunnel and rear shelf carpet but the floors and footwells just lay there. The footwell carpets just lift out and are more like mats because of the jute backing. Once I remove the seats the floor carpets just lift out. Works well for me. Larry Miller http://www.ado13.com... Bob... welcome! I think just under 50K. Most of those left are "over here" rather than "over there". Those in reasonably decent shape are getting more rare but ebay, etc. have them around from time to time. Don't know how many are left. One is restored excellent shape needing nothing will go for as much as 14-15k these days, 13k or better for sure. A decently rebuildable/driveable one might go for 7-8K or so. Of course, you can run across a good deal by accident as I and other listers have from time to time. But most likely anything... MORE
I have seen the snaps attached to the floor with rivets. If the carpet has edging It will pretty much keep itself flat when the outer edge tucks under the lower panels. Mine just lays there but it is high quality custom cut and edged. I like to be able to remove it if (when) it gets wet. Larry Miller http://www.ado13.com "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14292... MORE
I just got my new carpet set and I'm ready for the install into my Bugeye. I would like to install it without using adhesive. I hate to have that stuff all over my nice clean pans and boot. Having just last year disassembled another bugeye for restoration I know how tough the adhesive is to remove from the steel. (Of course that set was in the car for 44 years.) Is it impractical to install without the glue? Any other tips and tricks to use? I plan to put some heat reflecting foil down too where I have... MORE
For my 2 cents worth, I have to ask are you using the recommended 20- 50 oil and what is the outside temperature? 20-50 moves reeeeaaaallll slow unless it is 80 degrees F or above. I'm outside Portland, OR, USA and I think you are in England, so Temp and rain similar, and a couple of years ago, I posted about not being able to get oil into the engine as the valve cover filled up but nothing drained into the pan. I am one of school of thought that belives in turning over the engine until the oil... MORE
Thanks Duncan, I'm running out the door right now cause my brother called and said, "we're golfing. Get you clubs out. I'm on my way over." So I'll check that out when I return. Thanks to both you and PaulA for the quick response. Paul wanted to know which smooth ... which ribbed, but I of course didn't know and wanted the complete list. Nyuk. I'll get back to you guys later. Carry on, gents! Michael Modesto, CA (FORE!) Furryoldgrover@... 14256... MORE

The A series oiling system is a pretty bullet proof design and very reliab le. Even a totally trashed engine will show some oil pressure at startup. I f you engine was fine when you put it into storage it should be okay now. H owever if you truly DO NOT have any OP now, I suspect you do have damaged engine bearings and the motor will need to come out. Was it making any ratt leing noises while running? I suggest that you remove the oil line fitting, at the block, make and in stall a temporary line... MORE
Would someone tell me what is the correct procedure for replacing the rear spring bushes on a bugeye. i.e. jack up the body until the weight is off the springs, how do you know when the weight is off? When you do get the weight off, and you remove the bolt holding the bush, does the hole stay lined up for re-insertion of the bolt? Any help would be appreciated. "wrx111au" 14222... MORE

None, but you do have to push real hard to get the bolt through the floorpan with the carpet in place. One of the first things that I did to my Bugeye was to Olywax/Waxoly? the "common Bugeye rust areas" including the floorpans. (Paint first, that stuff is neat, but there isn't any painting or gluing after it's on.) I also found that there is a drain in the floorpan, something that I didn't know as I was driving home 25 years ago and the creek was going over the road. Caution, 5" of clearance and ???" to your... Leather seats don't have to cost so very much. I bought a full hide from Bill Hirsch for $200, two yards of matching vinyl for $20 at a local uph supply, and a local upholstery shop sewed the seats up for $100. Had enough leather to cover the inst panel and doors, and enough vinyl to cover the trim panels. Add the cost of some masonite, new seals, some misc supplies and a new carpet set on sale, and the entire retrim was about $600. My seat foams were good, and the metal seat parts required only a little... MORE
Hi All Looking for a complete parking brake assembly for my bugeye. I have the linkage on the rear axle and the cable. Just need the part that bolts onto the tranny tunnel. Since the Bugeye did not have carpet the wood was in direct contact with the floor and the rubber mats were slotted to fit over the seat runners. If you put the wood on top of the carpet you will raise the seats by the thickness of the carpet. For you taller drivers this could be a small problem. It also makes the carpets harder to remove for drying if they should get wet...... Larry Miller http://www.ado13.com "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14168... MORE
