I have a 59 bugeye with an 1100 engine and today when I started it up a squeeling sound came from the front of the engine. At first I thought it was the alternator, so i took it out and it seems fine. My question is does the water pump have berings that could go out, and if so would it make a sort of squeeling noise. And no it is not the belt making the noise i checked that already. It seema to make the noise only during excelleration. Any sugestions would help a lot thanks Brian blangevin41@...... MORE

Hey guys, I have this project car (AN5L9717) out in bay #2 in the garage. It hasn't had too much progress in the last two years since I picked it up. Right now I am trying to get some fresh interest going and have thought about running the Hot Rod Power Tour with it. My question is what sort of A-Series 'Nads' would I need to run the 3.5 Diff ratio that VB has for sale? I am running a 3.7 in my 1293cc road car now, but 10% fewer RPM's would be nice when your hitting the Interstates.... MORE

Gilly, look up under dash and see if there is an extra nut on the end of the bolt. I seem to remember that there may be a self locking nut (like a nylock) to keep the bolt from working free, If that's not the case. Give it a few days soak with a penetrant (not WD40) which is really a water dispersant (WD formula 40). Try tightening AND loosening, and then some gentle heat if all else fails. if you're going to repaint anyway. Gerard pixelsmith@... 2040... MORE

on). You need a slow-up adhesive, that also allows the abilty to position the liner. Nothing worse than having the ribs not horizontal. Do not use the or "3M Super Trim Adhesive 08090 Yellow" (spray can) - this set-ups way too fast and will make placement of the liner impossible. I know, I started with the spray-on and was unable to work the liner into position. After 4 races this year and countless hours in the hot sun, the liners are still in perfect position. Sounds like primarily shocks to me, but have you jacked up easch wheel to see where you have play? There could be numerous factors contributing to this symptom. Jack up the car under the spring pan raising the tire from the ground. Grab the wheel with one hand opposite the other and see if you can make the wheel wobble. Do this with your hands in vertical, horizontal and diagonal alignment. you should be able to feel if there is play in the wheel bearing. also pull and push along the axles axis and up and down in the... Mike, thats where i put mine.. A few things to think about. I put mine to the right hand side of my radiator where the heater intake would be (no heater on my bugeye) which means there is one connection higher than the other. In this configuration I believe it better that pressurised oil go in the lower of the two, and out the upper fitting (of the cooler). This would imho reduce any tendancy for cavitation and reduced cooling efficiency. If its mounted with both outlets at the same height i doubt this would matter so much. best... MORE

Thanks to everyone who responded (& those Listers who thought about it too). Unanimous advice - must be a first for the List! Sounds like re-assembling split Calipers is "No Biggy" (what I tell 5 yr old granddaughter when she makes a mistake). Have ordered fluid channel seals & will make sure surfaces are smooth. Friend will provide 1 pt. Guinness per Caliper (or maybe Caliper half) as payback. ; ^D Thanks again Jim Rogers San Juan Capistrano CA 59 Bugeye (will stop now - at least when I get it running) jarplanner@... 1983... MORE

Mike My '59 ran hot and I installed an '88 Jeep Cherokee Electric Fan directly behind the grille in the cowl. It just needed spacers on the sides. It's hooked to a pull switch on the dash and I work it manually. Without it I would have been in trouble many times this summer. The fan doesn't seem to block much air when not in use. I just got done doing a re-tune on my dual carbs and I was thinking. That always gets me in trouble. There is a oil line that runs from the back side of the motor (948) to the oil filter (old style). Can I have that line run to a oil cooler and then to the filter? WOuld that work? Also there was a thread a long time ago about putting a mazda 323 electric fan on a bugeye. Would it go in the front of a radiator or behine the radiator? If it goes in front wouldn't it... MORE

The synchros work by friction between a baulk ring and a cone on the end of the gear. Making things slipperier will only make things worse. If the synchros are worn, it won't help. If there is air in the clutch preventing proper disengagement, then the solution is to bleed the air out. I find the clutch is very diffcult to bleed properly without a check valve on the bleed hose if you're not using something like a Mighty-Vac. Gerard pixelsmith@... 1923... MORE

Mike, I have had the easiest results using a gunson pressure brake bleeder. The cap fits onto the master cylinder reservoir, theres a topup bottle arrangement and a lead out for air pressure. the lead is connected to an inflated tyre, which applies positive pressure to the fluid in the topup bottle, which in turn applies pressure to the master cylinder. Things to be careful of, make sure the cap is on the master cylinder tightly, or else there will be a nice spray of brake fluid coming out over all of your nice clean paintwork. I have never... Hi guys. Haven't posted in a while but I still read all the posts. Doing ok. Been riding motorcycles cause it is so hot here in sacramento. Bugeye is still going strong and did a all out quick weekend ride from Sacramento to half moon bay. Car made it no problems. If I shift fast fron first to second the gear box cruches a little. If I hesitate it won't do that. It's getting worse now and I think I have to bleed the clutch again. If I pump the clutch it shifts of but if I don't it... MORE

I have been reading about the corrosive issues with brake fluid for sometime on this list and everyone seems to go to the sleeving solution. Just wondering if anyone has ever tried plating of the wheel cylinders and brake cylinder components instead. In my daily grind we use flash plating of steels to eliminate corrosion problems using nickel/ teflon, sometimes called "ployond", with absolutely no corrosion in the worst of environments. The plating can be flashed to 0.0005" per side and can be masked if required. Costing is relatively inexpensive, but then again we do this alot. I may... MORE

Tre, Regarding usinga Bugeye bonnet one a later car. It's been done many times on later cars. Never seen two alike. It, of course, does require removing the front fenders, front valence as well as the bonnet, but this is all bolt on stuff and is easily removed or replaced. Cars ofter the Bugeye has a lip at the outer edge of inner fender along the wheel arch to inhibit dirt from getting between the fender and the outer footwell. This would be in the way of a one piece bonnet. The only other modification would be some hardware... MORE

Hi Guys, A word from over the pond; just collected my mail and caught the 'later Sprite/Midget' discussion from earlier and thought (if you don't mind) I'd thow in my ha'porth [2c worth over there?]. I live in Bournemouth - south coast of England (100 miles south of London) and am restoring a late '59 Bugeye that has been resting for over 25 years. I saw a GAN6 Midget advertised in the local paper a few weeks ago and have seen it re-advertised every week since...the restoration is going slowly so I thought I might run a cheap 'other'... MORE

It was covered. Witness the blue tarp hanging out of the cockpit. A tarp over a car that is parked on soil is about the worst thing you can do. Condensation forms under the tarp and not only becomes a "terrarium" but water is driven through the paint and the car will very quickly self-destruct. ANYTHING would have been better than keeping it perpetually covered. Gerard pixelsmith@... 1829... MORE

I pulled out dual water temp/oil pressure gauge (orginal Bugeye gauge) from my parts car to see if it worked. Made sure dial moved okay, then cleaned sensor end & placed in boiling water. No dial movement! Anything else I can check or try? or is gauge just scrap? TIA Jim Rogers San Juan Capistrano CA 59 Bugeye jarplanner@... 1802... MORE

G'day Bernard, Originally i went the way of putting a ribbed case gearbox behind a 948cc motor, and due to the different backing plates mentioned by Gerard, the first time in the car, the clutch would not release. The difference in thickness of the backing plates meant that the splines on the gearbox first motion shaft were actually binding on the centre of the clutch friction plate, so even though the clutch was released, the plate was driving the first motion shaft. My solution at the time was to machine a small amount off the splined section on the... MORE

Hello all, I am in the midst of a complete restoration and are wondering what color some of the components in my engine should be. I know the engine is green, fan blades yellow, and that the radiator and arms fastening it to the body are black. The pedal box is also to be black I believe, what parts? Are the actual pedals black also? Also, I am having the body repainted old english white. what parts do i also need to give the painter toi be painted?? thanks, troy Harker tro4@... 1786... MORE

Chris, If the rust is not too crusty and just a surface patina, use phosphoric acid to remove the rust. It will dissolve it and leave the fresh and clean.(you'll be surprised) Phosphoric acid is also known as metal prep. Jasco makes a solution called "Metal Prep and Prime" and can be found in home improvement stores like Home Depot and cost about half what a body shop will charge. This is a process that requires patience. If the rust is rather heavy, use a coarse wire brush first and then the metal prep. Repeated applications will eventually dissolve... MORE

As a new lister, I would welcome some help on my '58 sprite re-build. The b ody work is well rusted, although not all the way through. It is as if the panels have been grit blasted , then allowed to rust uniformly for a while. Floors and sills have been replaced. The problem is how to prepare the body for painting. I will be removing the rust with an angle grinder with wire brush attachment, then patching the p anels if there are holes. What do I do then? How do I stop rust forming straight away? I... MORE
