Group, I just joined this group a couple of weeks ago and my doctor gave me some bad news yesterday. I can't get in the bugeye with my bum pelvis and hip I injured in my head on collision. I guess it's got to go! It's rust free and runs like a bear. I have two extra engines complete from clutch to fan. Two extra trannys and a set of racing carbs. I have to digest the news and maybe think of some way of entering the car without messing up my future hip and pelvic transplant. It may... MORE
Hi All, Here's a case of dedication and good fortune! Friend of mine from Virginia located a Fully restored Bugeye, all original, complete with soft and hard top on either Craigslist or Traderonline. Was sent a bunch of photos, which he forwarded on to me. It looked too good to be true for 6K. It was located in Kennewick, WA. Was about a 10 year old restoration. Original owner passed away and a friend was selling it for his widow. He flew out with his wife, they loved it! Bought it. Drove it to friends place in Puyallup. Made... MORE
G'day all Why is it you Yanks have to have your own unique way of measuring stuff. Where did this idea of a "US gallon" come from anyway. I don't suppose you have a "US inch" or a "US second" do you? OK, I can understand the confusion, but this is a British car and has British components measured in British units. You should be aware that referring to components in other languages (and I do refer to American) or even daring to carry metric tools in the boot (no, not trunk) can cause your Bugeye to have a... Well all, My daughter has a Miata and I looked it over a few months ago thinking about putting that entire drive train and suspension in my Bugeye. I decided to go ahead and use the A-Series and 5-speed, and update the suspension with air bags. I didn't want to have to buy the Miata and see what I can do. Well, to all you Fathers out there, last night I just got the call all Fathers dred. Yep, Mr. Hahs, this is Sargent Phelps from La Mirada Police Department. You daughter has been involved in an accident, and... MORE

Well... it's not a single cotton thread...it's three or four strands twisted around one another and soaked in copper coat (or similiar). This "amalgam" of soaked "fibers" were then placed on the gasket, normally between cylinders 2&3. The head was then installed and torqued in the normal way. The story goes that.....supposedly..... the block deck between cyls. 2&3 on factory fresh Series A motors was subject to "sinking" a bit until such time as the block was decked during subsequent overhaul, after which further "sinking" in this area did not occur. It was a long time ago that I... MORE

Next you are going to tell me that not using gasket sealer at all, but spraying the head gasket with aluminum paint prior to bolting it in doesn't work. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 14759... MORE
Hello bugeye gang! I'm a rookie here. I have a 1961 bugeye race car. I purchased the car from an older gentleman in Kansas last August. It came with two extra engines and trannys. It's rustfree equipped with a rollbar and racing suspension. Lot's of race parts. I just bought a master cylinder on e-bay today and that's all it needs to be race ready. Unfortunately last November I was involved in a head-on collision in Ireland with a government offical and broke both hips and 26 other fractures. The doctor doesn't think I will be able to get into... MORE
I should have specified, unfortunately I don't have an 11 stud 1275, this is a 9 stud 948 block and 5 studs go into the water jacket. Cheers 'Curt "cfisher1a" 14739... MORE
I am curious why you are using sealant on the head studs at all. To my knowledge the only wet stud, actually usually a bolt is the front one on 1275 11 stud heads. It seems to be good practice that this one is heli-coiled with a stainless insert to prevent the bolt rusting in position. The dry studs wouldn't need any form of sealer. "modsprite" 14738... MORE
Hi List, I'm having a hard time sealing the cylinder head studs that go into the water jacket. I used Permatex teflon thread sealer, but can still see that the sealer has migrated out of the threads and under the gasket. Anyone have a product they like better? I want to avoid anything too permanent. Thanks for the advice from several on head gasket sealing! Cheers, Curt Fisher "cfisher1a" 14737... MORE
My head has .070 shaved off it. When I installed it, I painted the gasket with silver paint on both sides and placed a piece of copper wire , unraveled from a multi strand wire, between the cycl. It seems to have worked for 10 to 15 years without leaking. H Haynes "haynesh2000" 14725... MORE
List, I'm trying to lower my compression ratio enough to get it to hold a head gasket. Short of removing some material from the combustion chamber, I thought I might try using two head gaskets. Anyone had any success with this? I calculate that I'd still have nearly 12:1 compression ration with two gaskets, and I'm a bit leary of adding a another potential leak path and perhaps damaging the integrity of the gaskets. Just wondered if this has worked for anyone else. Thanks, Curt "cfisher1a" 14707... MORE
There's something about rockers and the valve covers.... The rockers scrape a lot of the valve covers, it fact the aliminumn valve covers are often ground on the inside to allow for clearance... Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 14694... MORE
I have the right size push rods. (the smaller ones) I was taking a closer look and the roller starts on the outboard side of the stem top and never makes it to center, under full valve compression. These could move over .125" and still work! Which also brings up the point that my valve cover scrapes the ends of the rockers. Hmmm, maybe my rocker pedistals are the wrong ones? Are they different from the 1275 and the smaller engines? Maybe in the past someone swapped them? Greg "Greg Hahs" 14693... MORE
OK, I made it almost 30 minutes before I had to reply. Asside from the several negitave thoughts that I had about doing it.... Down to the "Spock" basic's 1. You know, or maybe not, that one of the things that is done to the "A" engine is reboring to 1390CC's which is done by a machine shop with a jig that repositions #2 & 3 cylinders closer together, thereby allowing larger pistions.... Which using the same principal, have the machine shop use a jig, or drill press, and drill and tap a larger hole, .0075 off center, thereby... MORE
OK, I've been looking this over and have an idea I want to put up to everyone. I'll call APT tomorrow. But anyway, I was thinking about taking the rocker supports off, one at a time, and have a friend of mine wire EDM the mounting holes out .015" elongated. That could shift the entire rocker train over .015" and that would give me the clearance I would need. The roller is shifted over center the other way, so it would also center up the roller on top of the valve stem. The only thing is I would only... MORE
OK Leroy! If you aren't a 97 lb weakling, just get it close. It's a little bitty engine. Now if it were a 454, that's a different story. Actually Leroy, I have mine on a stand right now, and if you are going to do to your engine, what I have done to mine, mounting it to the stand is the least of your worries. Try bolting on a new aluminum head, 1.50 roller rockers, adjustable belt drive, and find out that when each pushrod is off the cam lobe, it rubs up against the head!!!! AHHHH!!!!!!!! So all,... MORE
seems like a scary thing to do. Think about the repetitive stress the rocker assembly must withstand. If it can move, I'm afraid it will move. The rollertip rockers might withstand shimming the stanchions up. I did that to an old inline Ford once. Leroy "Carol and Leroy Valentin" 14684... MORE
Thanks for the advice and info. As far as pushrods, Greg, I have been told that there are two sizes in dia. and the larger ones need to have the head relived. I have my aluminum head, plan on 1.5 rollertip rockers. What rockers did you use? Some locate on the stock rockerarm shaft. I have heard the spring spacer is not the way to go with rollertip rockers. Any input? Leroy "Carol and Leroy Valentin" 14678... MORE
Hi List, I have a 948 block with a 12A 185 casting cyclinder head. I've read there is both a "small bore" and "big bore" version with this casting #. Mine appears to have been a 997 cc application originally as it does not have the biggest valves that were listed for this head and it has 9 studs. My question is, do I use the big bore gasket? I've blown about 6 948 gaskets and have flat surfaces, arp studs etc. I'm hoping going to a black composite 1275 gasket will solve my problem. Anyone had any experience... MORE
