Dear list, I will be fitting a 1275 within a year to my Bugeye Vintage racer (yes that's legal in the groups I race with). I feel I should improve the cooling system at the same time. There are some very expensive aluminum radiators from the specialty shops, but ISTR suggestions of some aluminum radiators from modern cars that make good swaps. I didn't find anything when I searched the archives, so hear is is again. What subsitutions have people tried that work well, don't take a lot of monkey buissness to fit and plumb and are cost effective?... MORE

I have a 1959 for sale. The car is in excellent driving condition with only a couple very minor body blemishes that can be fixed very easily. The top and tuneau are in perfect condition and the engine has been restored a few years ago. I recently replaced the starter, generator, and put on a spin on oil filter adaptor in the past 2 years. Horizontal measurements are from the edge of the rubber taillight gasket to the tips of the arrow. Vertical measurements are from the edge of the body panel to the tips of the arrow. Over here, Colin, we measure capacity in U.S. gallons of which the BE holds 7.2. The factory service book says it and I believe because in 1965 I ran out of gas in my BE and just happened to coast into a service station and stopped at the pump. It took precisely 7.2 U.S. gallons and cost $2.00 exactly. I can only find reference to the 12cj engine equipped cars being 6 gallons and the later RBM cars are still listed as 7.2 U.S. gallons. Wanted to thank everyone for the advice I received on installing resleeved master and clutch cylinders and with the resulting leak of the master cylinder. Could be your speedo or tach is not accurate. 5000 rpm should be nearly 75 mph. Suspension and steering are okay if in good condition, although a BE sharing the road with 18 wheelers is going to get blown around, and can be scary. The drum brakes are not up to interstate speed, and most have replaced them with discs. If you really do want to run at interstate speeds, an upgrade to 1275cc and 3.9 or 3.7 diff, or Datsun 5-speed will do the job. "joe blxfstz" 14866... MORE
Doug....not to butt in, but.... the Frog was made back in '58 for basically British roads/speed conditions back then... same for our conditions here in the states when traffic moved more slowly "back when". Of course, the upgraded 1098's and 1275's did better over here speed-wise. And "over there" later on as well as the British developed their limited access highways as well. However.....upgrade same with front disc brakes, anti-sway bar, wider wheel s and modern (larger tires) and it becomes a nicely stable platform at high er limited access highway speeds, easily handled by a 1275/Datsun 5 speed/3.7... Michael- I've been trying to figure out how the "Guys" drive these things at anything above 60-65mph...my poor little 948 w/ stock tranny and 4.22 RE is well above 5krpm at 65 and the suspension and brakes at that speed leave me w/ little/no confidence. I just replaced my BE seats and foam kits from Victoria British. Blue on Blue Bugeye standard. Woops, just means last August. I don't know what their price is now!! The kit went on pretty well for an novice upholstery guy. the best way to get excellent gass millage is to lie about it!!!! Gas story - I drove from Corvallis, OR to LaGrande, OR a distance of 350 miles. Wanting adventure I stayed off the freeway I5/I84 and crossed the mountains over to Prineville. FWIW, I am running a 1275 W/HS-4's. The PO had installed #6 needles and I was getting about 15 MPG. BC convinced me to switch to NG's and I think I am getting about 35 MPG before switching to the 5 speed. The plugs don't come out heavy black carbon any more either. Bob, Troutdale, OR P.S. I still think 15 is way too little for the amount of work it is doing " at highway speed". I keep records of my vehicles MPGs and here are some other examples. Well... it's not a single cotton thread...it's three or four strands twisted around one another and soaked in copper coat (or similiar). This "amalgam" of soaked "fibers" were then placed on the gasket, normally between cylinders 2&3. The head was then installed and torqued in the normal way. The story goes that.....supposedly..... the block deck between cyls. 2&3 on factory fresh Series A motors was subject to "sinking" a bit until such time as the block was decked during subsequent overhaul, after which further "sinking" in this area did not occur.
