To quote my friend Norm - it's either a feast of a famine So here's a Mk II Sprite fitted with small block Chev Corvette engine. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=3D1&item=3D4547 154080&category=3D6023 The eBay description reads: 1962 Austin Healey Sprite MKII. Equipped with rebuilt 1972 Corvette V8 Chevy small block 350, 4 bolt main. You really take tools, parts and towbar with your LBC when you travel? You don't get to work on my car.......... (HHH) 15 MPG is pretty bad, need a tune up? I have driven my BE from Vancouver, BC to Ensenada, BC ( Mexico ) , never took so much as a screwdriver and got 47 MPG. My Mother used to regularly get 54 in hers. BTW, your brake pipe is off and on my desk, I will get it posted soon. It is "as bent" originally and you get the OE " British Undercoating " too! BC******************** "British... MORE
Does anybody have a picture of the way that the brake pipe from the union to the right front brake is routed? How about a description of the route if no one has a picture? I need to see where it goes before I start bending. It looks like it goes around the back of the shock but the pipe I have does not look to be long enough for that. I'm using one of the kits as sold by Moss and VB. "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14748... MORE
Paul...IMHO.... Datsun 5 speed conversion....now's the time. It will transform the car....first three gears are lower than later ribcase which will really be helpful to the smaller bore motors while 4th is still 1 to 1....and 5th will be much appreciated for cruise especially when using a 4.22 diff. And YOU will appreciate not only the car's greater flexibility but even more so, the peace and quiet of the gearbox which will allow you to better hear the engine's great exhaust note....win/win situation all around!! :) Cap'n Bob Basic Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 14705... MORE
Nah, those are easy. Put the Datsun 5 speed transmission in, which has the slave cylinder on the other side, low. No hole, the slave cylinder bleeder is between the frame rail and the transmission. You can't get to it from below, and above you only have the engine, exhaust, carbs, fuel lines, etc. Seeing the bleeder is hard, much less getting a wrench, scocket, pliers on it to open and close it. It's too close to the frame for a bleeder hose...... and like the A.H. slave, you end up doing it 3 times before it gets all... MORE
This forum/discussion group will probably be of very little help to you in that most will allow what is know as "bolt on & reversable modifications" in that there is little if any perment modifications to the cars. The changes are reversable in that instulation of a 1275 motor and a ribcase transmission is reversable be simple pulling out the 1275 & transmission and bolting in a 948 and smoothcase transmission. Disc brakes, etc, are also reversable, if someone in the future wanted to. The major cutting and reworking that you are planning is not easily reversable, and I... MORE
Larry, I thought you went with the Webers for bonnet clearance? I'm still hoping to go with the EFI and ECU combination on my Swift Bugeye, hopefully just by setting the tilt on the block with the motor mounts to minimize engine height. In your opinion, do you think this is possible? How did you come up with a runner length for your DCOEs? The reason I ask is there's a carb manifold on ebay right now that I'm thinking of picking up: http://tinyurl.com/4xdu8 The runners are very short. Any comments from anyone regarding runner length choices vs carb... MORE
After 8 months I'm finally back to work on Bugzuki. Mike Pierce at Pierce Manifolds in Gilroy CA custom made an intake manifold to mount twin DCOE 40's. Details and picture at http://www.ado13.com/dohczuke/dohc.htm Larry Miller http://www.ado13.com "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14356... MORE
Mike.... the rollbar will be of minimal protection if it is bolted, rather than welded in, though it will stiffen the structure in either case, less in the first case, more in the last. Don't know about that particular opening in your Xmission tunnel. :( Cap'n Bob Basic Frog (with welded-in rollbar) "Robert E. Shlafer" 14338... MORE
Congrats, Michael!! Got another one. S/O will have her own BE now...very cool. :) I am looking foward to pics this coming Sat. The 948 is much more smooth than the 1275 (though nothing beats the 1098 in this respect, IMHO) and it's note more raspy as well as I recall. Stick an Abarth exhaust on it and it gets "raspier" yet!! Sounds positively great! With it's lower 1ST 2 gears and 4.22, a healthy 948 can be pretty peppy aro und town. Wait'll you notice it's low end fuel economy over the 1275...big difference. Getting to 60 is... MORE
Nitemare, 60-70% seem to work ok, but then there is nobody riding on the passenger side. The front tunnel carpet is being replaced as we speak. The one on the drivers floor, sucks at best, but then I'm 6'2" so kindof drag my feet (and head) getting in. I Oylwaxed the floor pans so am kindof stuck with some kind of snaps, unless I screw the carpet down. Bob, Troutdale, OR P.S. Adjusted carbs, (Arm rubbing against Jets while installing XXX.) Michael I had mine done by an automotive upholstery shop and had a 3/8" thick jute material glued to the back of all the pieces. This made the floor and footwell sections quite stiff. The jute goes to about 3/4" of the edge of the carpets. I allowed them to glue the tunnel and rear shelf carpet but the floors and footwells just lay there. The footwell carpets just lift out and are more like mats because of the jute backing. Once I remove the seats the floor carpets just lift out. Works well for me. Larry Miller http://www.ado13.com... Gerald.... The '67 was the last of pre-emissions engines, though it did come with a PC V valve mounted on the intake manifold. This worked together with the filtered plastic oil cap to provide regulation of crankcase flow-through to dump crankcase gases into the combustion process dependent upon the amount of crankcase depression at any given point in time. This valve is equipped with only one part to wear....it's rubber diaphragm. When it becomes porous, the motor will begin to smoke through the exhaust as the amount of crankcase gases entering the combustion process becomes "uncontrolled". To test for... MORE
G'day Jens The very first place after the oil pump where the oil exits the block is the large threaded hole on the right ride rear, sitting at approx 45 degree angle, where there will be a banjo bolt and an oil pipe down to the oil filter. If you have an oil cooler fitted, then you will have an oil line there that goes to the cooler. The oil then travels through the filter and back through the internal oil galleries, with cross-drillings that feed the camshaft and crankshaft bearings, before at last coming to the small hole... My BE has a '67 1275 with all of the air injection plumbing removed. It runs fine and is a joy to drive. Last year a new (engine)problem developed and I'm not sure what to do about it. Occasionally when taking off from a stop after idling a short while a big cloud of oily smelling smoke comes out of the exhaust. Everything will be fine and then after many stops/starts it will do it again. It's embarassing since I look like a world class polluter. I took the odd looking PCV valve apart and noticed a small amount... MORE
I am in the process of restoring a '58 Sprite and am soliciting any help anyone can offer. I have a 948 and 1275 engine, both front drum and disk brake set-up. I am planning to use the 1275 engine and the disk brakes. I purchased new front spindles and a varity of parts. I do need help with the engine rebuilding and assembly. Having surfed the web I found a varity of tips and hints. Adding grease ftgs to the king pin assembly, adding O sensors to the exhaust to fine tune the SU carbs, using 7/16 wheel... MORE

Hi list, I need to add a brake proportioning valve to my bugeye. I need your help! Again =). I have a 58 bugeye with original size brakelines. I'd like to know: What size are my lines and what thread?? What type and make of proportioning valve do you reccomend? I'm planning on placing it inline just behind the front/rear splitter thingy. Or, what I use is a 7/16" crow foot style socket on a 6" extention with a 1/4" braker bar. I call it crow foot style, but since it has 5 of the six sides, it might be a tubing style socket. Bob, Troutdale, OR Take a long handled 7/16 box wrench and bend it to the proper shape, with heat of course, and grind an opening into the box end for the brake pipe to fit in , and you should be able to get a better purchase on the nut to get it tighter. ] "Robert Webb"... New carbs are available from Moss and probably others. They aren't cheap. Rebuildable ones show up on ebay regularly. You can also upgrade to 1-1/4" carbs as used on the later cars, either buying new ones from Moss, or rebuilding some from ebay or elsewhere. That might add a few HP. Beyond that are special heads, cams, headers, side draft carbs, etc. If you spent enough money, you cold make as much HP as installing a stock 1275, and that's what most people do. For what it would cost to get 65HP from a 948, you could have a... MORE
You should not have any trouble finding a set of inexpensive used 1 1/8 inch SU carbs (stock size) right here on the list, as these are not really a popular size now. I might even have a pair hanging around. Before you buy something expensive, contact me. I will sell them to you for less than e bay. I will have to do some digging to find them. Might even have the manifold if I look hard enough. Bob in San Diego New carbs are available from Moss and probably others. They aren't cheap. Rebuildable ones show up... MORE
Bob, I'm glad you emailed as now I have a chance to thank you for the card and the cute Greenback Origami! I have been gone for a while and just got back a couple of days ago. I went to So. I did a Weber conversion on a 2600 Alfa a few yrs. ago and got 3, 45 DCOE-9's from Pierce Manifold in Gilroy, Ca. The explanation for the different suffix numbers was the way the carb came jetted from Weber. The Weber was an original factory option on the 2600's (mine started life w/ Solex carbs) and that allowed the carb to be setup for the that engine and then Alfa could stock carbs w/ the correct jetting. At least thats the story I got. In any case, Webers aren't being made any more and having purchased a few... MORE
Hi all I've decided to stay with my 1275 3-bolt flange exhaust manifold for noise reduction and leak preventative. Since I have air bags and will be able to lower the car for a lower center of gravity, I would like to run the exhaust through the tunnel. Anyone ever done this with the 5-speed tranny in place? Does anyone offer up a kit for it that doesn't include the header and designed for this manifold? WHat about the floating 3-bolt flange that goes on the other side of the manifold? Is it a special one? Greg "Greg Hahs"... MORE
