I'm no expert, and I haven't seen this one in person, but if I was looking for a gas tank, this one looks good. http://tinyurl.com/8y4le No interest, financial or otherwise. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 14963... MORE
G'day all Why is it you Yanks have to have your own unique way of measuring stuff. Where did this idea of a "US gallon" come from anyway. I don't suppose you have a "US inch" or a "US second" do you? OK, I can understand the confusion, but this is a British car and has British components measured in British units. You should be aware that referring to components in other languages (and I do refer to American) or even daring to carry metric tools in the boot (no, not trunk) can cause your Bugeye to have a... Sorry to hear about your daughter's experience. My daughter was involved in a huge crash in her Honda Civic. Fortunately, she came out without a scratch, as did her two passengers. The accident was especially scary since she tangled with the mid-section of a loaded Chevron fuel truck. But, as small as a Civic is, the car is designed to be safe, and it gave up its life to protect the lives of its occupants. Hopefully your daughter will get over her very understandable, small car phobia. I'd hate to think she would let go of the "fun" part... MORE
G'day all It's interesting that the eBay seller lists it as a 7 gallon tank. Only the rubber-nose Midgets had 7 gallon tanks, all other earlier cars had just 6 gallons. The extra gallon came as a result of the tank sides being 1" deeper. Of course, the rubber-nose cars originally sat 1" higher on the road, so tanks floor to road clearance didn't change. Fit a 7 gallon tank in an earlier car, or a lowered rubber-nose, and you need to be aware of this. And for the Concourse minded Bugeye owners - we judges can tell the... MORE
Colin, We might be looking at different units of measurement here. The manual for my 62 Mk 2 Sprite list the tank as having a capacity of 6 gallons (7.2 U.S. gallons,27.3 litres). So it was 6 gallons on one side of the pond and 7.2 gallons on the other side while speaking of the same tank. Nelson "Nelson Wittstock" 14909... MORE
Now come on guys and gals. Let's confess up. COLIN IS THE BEST. Don't you just love it that he has these tidbits that are, in fact ... fact! Not making fun. No, no, no. I love it. 7 gal fuel tank vs 6 gal fuel tank. Life is good when you have these kind of factoids available. Thanks Colin. and .... Over here, Colin, we measure capacity in U.S. gallons of which the BE holds 7.2. The factory service book says it and I believe because in 1965 I ran out of gas in my BE and just happened to coast into a service station and stopped at the pump. It took precisely 7.2 U.S. gallons and cost $2.00 exactly. I can only find reference to the 12cj engine equipped cars being 6 gallons and the later RBM cars are still listed as 7.2 U.S. gallons. Correction, A.H. Spares lists the "petrol tank" for the MKI @ 99.50 lbs = $189.902, which after my dealings with A.H. Spares, would buy it from them in a heartbeat. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 14897... MORE

I just replaced my BE seats and foam kits from Victoria British. Blue on Blue Bugeye standard. Woops, just means last August. I don't know what their price is now!! The kit went on pretty well for an novice upholstery guy. the best way to get excellent gass millage is to lie about it!!!! Gas story - I drove from Corvallis, OR to LaGrande, OR a distance of 350 miles. Wanting adventure I stayed off the freeway I5/I84 and crossed the mountains over to Prineville. I filled up in Prinville and As I was leaving town I checked my... MORE
I just did a mental calculation, something like this. Hm,stops for gas at 100 miles; tank holds 7.2 US gals.; must not wait until it is dry to stop, so add a little fudge factor; shake about the brainpan and voila'! Out comes a guesstimate of 15. And that is the way it works. I like to stop about every 100 miles too, but I seldom get gas then. In 1966 I ran out of gas in my BE, was lucky enough to coast into a Mohawk gas station and stopped at the pump. It took exactly 7.2 gals.... MORE
Speaking of Portland does anyone, besides the ones who live nearby, plan on going to the ABFM in Portland (first weekend in September) this summer? We plan on driving the Bugeye again this year, assuming it is not broken by then :-) We usually take two days up and two days back with the stopovers being in far northern California. Anybody interested in a caravan let me know and maybe we can hookup. My buddy Warren will co-drive the Bugeye and Sandi & Kathy will drive the emergency vehicle with tools and other spare parts, including a Bugeye towbar.... MORE

Larry- You didn't like the angle of the brake pedal so you just removed it? You removed the gas pedal I assume (?) and left the bare gas throttle rod.... Doug in Santa Clara dpecchenino@... 14772... MORE
My Bugeye has newer replacement floorpans with the deeper depression under the pedals. The PO just mounted the gas pedal at an angle by bolting one bolt to the flat surface and one bolt to the angled part. I have it out while replacing carpets and I want to remedy this. Has anyone fitted a later gas pedal that just hangs rather than using the organ style. Phil Nase http://home.ptd.net/~nase "Phil Nase" 14751... MORE
Hello all; Just looking for some expert opinions. I purchased a 59 bugeye about 5 years ago from a neighbour who was downsizing with the intentions of doing what I had to in order to get it on the road. Prior to me buying the car it came off the road and sat in the neighbours garage for 12+ years. When I bought it I gassed it up, checked the fluids and started it with the first turn of the key. 3- 4 minutes later, the gas tank and water pump started leaking so I shut it off and... MORE
What is your tire pressure, and are the front springs stock (45 years old?) If it doesn't bounce, feel like you are driving a tank, then something is too soft. All the bugeye's that I rembember driving, you hit a pebble, you felt it. It is like an old apple crate car, solid axle attached directly to the body. No shocks, no sway, sore back on long trips, corners on a dime and gives you nine cents change. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 14714... MORE
Hi Jim, Look very closely at the fuel line. I had a dodge that exhibited a similar lack of power when the throttle was depressed. I looked at everything and could not figure it out. After trying to do a fast run around the neiborhood I got the car up on stands and there was a tiny wet area near the fuel line. It turned out the line was rotting from the inside out and there was a TINY pinhole that did not seep when the car was sitting, but was creating a vacuum leak or air lock when... MORE
Having a little problem with bugeye right that I can't get back to until next weekend, so I thought I would see if the lists have any suggestions beyond what I've done so far. Car was running perfectly at beginning of week. Drove it to work on Monday - ran great. Started out Tuesday morning, but turned back to house after a mile. Ran okay through neighborhood, seemed a little "off" but I just thought engine was still cold. But on highway I tried to accelerate hard, car ran up to about 2500-3000rpms, and would "stutter" - no power... MORE
Phil, You stop just short of all the information we need to go further. So let me ask these questions. The car is cold in the morning, you get in and push in clutch, starts ok, select rev and back out. Then if you put it in first and let out clutch, it drives away just fine. If you keep driving for a while, shifting through the gears up and down, it feels normal. How long can you keep driving with out the problem? If you keep driving, does the problem ever occur, or is it only there after... MORE
Nah, those are easy. Put the Datsun 5 speed transmission in, which has the slave cylinder on the other side, low. No hole, the slave cylinder bleeder is between the frame rail and the transmission. You can't get to it from below, and above you only have the engine, exhaust, carbs, fuel lines, etc. Seeing the bleeder is hard, much less getting a wrench, scocket, pliers on it to open and close it. It's too close to the frame for a bleeder hose...... and like the A.H. slave, you end up doing it 3 times before it gets all... MORE
Hey guys - ok i guess this has gone on long enough. I really thought that the notion of some semiliterate gen Y slacker posting about buying a bugeye and ricing it up, and just happening to put up his first post on April Fools day would arouse some suspicions. And who is Barz Cetane? What a name. I though that somebody would know that octane is to gasoline as cetane is... to diesel. As in Vin Diesel, star of the ricer classic The Fast and the Furious. And I thought some of you guys would go ballistic. Really... MORE
