"Oils ain't oils" Cheapo oil is exactly that...good base stock without benefit of the major mfgr's additive packages which make it "better" in preventing formation of acids, foaming, varnish/deposits, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. While the tolerences within our older engines were spec'd with petroleum based oils in mind...viscosity as much if not moreso, as film strength being in mind as a "boundary" between parts ................a quart of synthetic within 3 of petroleum can only be a good thing in terms of upgrad ing the mix by "reinforcing" film strength while adding "slipperiness" to t he whole. I have a 1959 for sale. The car is in excellent driving condition with only a couple very minor body blemishes that can be fixed very easily. The top and tuneau are in perfect condition and the engine has been restored a few years ago. I recently replaced the starter, generator, and put on a spin on oil filter adaptor in the past 2 years. It has very low origional miles on it and is good as a daily driver and close to concours condition. I can give more specifics to anyone interested. The sale is due to an... MORE
G'day all Why is it you Yanks have to have your own unique way of measuring stuff. Where did this idea of a "US gallon" come from anyway. I don't suppose you have a "US inch" or a "US second" do you? OK, I can understand the confusion, but this is a British car and has British components measured in British units. You should be aware that referring to components in other languages (and I do refer to American) or even daring to carry metric tools in the boot (no, not trunk) can cause your Bugeye to have a... Sorry Colin, Our kids only go to school 8 1/2 months a year on this side of the pond and a most of it is in being "Politically Correct", "non sexual discrimination", "Pro Teachers Union", "A Kennedy can do no wrong," etc, etc, etc. Reading, writing, and 'rithmatic are extra critical activities. The fact that a US Gallon is 4 quarts and an Imperial (as in United Kingdom) Gallon is 4 liters, and since they are teaching everything else, nobody can read when they grab the quart oil can that says it is only .9.... Liters. It's a good... MORE
Sorry to hear about your daughter's experience. My daughter was involved in a huge crash in her Honda Civic. Fortunately, she came out without a scratch, as did her two passengers. The accident was especially scary since she tangled with the mid-section of a loaded Chevron fuel truck. But, as small as a Civic is, the car is designed to be safe, and it gave up its life to protect the lives of its occupants. Hopefully your daughter will get over her very understandable, small car phobia. I'd hate to think she would let go of the "fun" part... MORE

Horizontal measurements are from the edge of the rubber taillight gasket to the tips of the arrow. Vertical measurements are from the edge of the body panel to the tips of the arrow. Now come on guys and gals. Let's confess up. COLIN IS THE BEST. Don't you just love it that he has these tidbits that are, in fact ... fact! Not making fun. No, no, no. I love it. 7 gal fuel tank vs 6 gal fuel tank. Life is good when you have these kind of factoids available. Thanks Colin. and .... There's an odd noise I can't identify coming from the back of the bugeye when the car is moving. Almost sounds like a muffled bag of tools bouncing around. It doesn't sound exactly metallic, but if you were ruling out sounds, you'd be left thinking that metal is responsible for the sound. It's not a click, grind, whine, rattle. Maybe a bit clunk-ish with a blanket thrown over it. It's repetitive... maybe 1-2 per second. My instinct says driveshaft related. Maybe u-joint? Or some slop somewhere? On to the stupid question you've all been waiting for... I want to... MORE
Hello Gang! Working on a BE that has a Judson supercharger installed, using stock carb.that came with the kit,the fuel pump is a electric Purlator [4 to 7 psi.],the problem is that the gas runs out the overflow of the carb.,do we need a fuel reg. or is there something wrong with the carb. float?????? Could be your speedo or tach is not accurate. 5000 rpm should be nearly 75 mph. Suspension and steering are okay if in good condition, although a BE sharing the road with 18 wheelers is going to get blown around, and can be scary. The drum brakes are not up to interstate speed, and most have replaced them with discs. If you really do want to run at interstate speeds, an upgrade to 1275cc and 3.9 or 3.7 diff, or Datsun 5-speed will do the job. "joe blxfstz" 14866... MORE

Hello all; Just looking for some expert opinions. I purchased a 59 bugeye about 5 years ago from a neighbour who was downsizing with the intentions of doing what I had to in order to get it on the road. Prior to me buying the car it came off the road and sat in the neighbours garage for 12+ years. When I bought it I gassed it up, checked the fluids and started it with the first turn of the key. 3- 4 minutes later, the gas tank and water pump started leaking so I shut it off and... MORE
BTDT... Oh, I agree, but my horn didn't and doesn't work without the little ground wire I ran from the steering rack to the radiator support bracket. It looks like the steering column is not grounded to the steering tube, and the little fitting the steering column attaches to, is surrounded with a plastic seal/bearing and with the oil/grease in the rack, somehow isn't grounded. FYI and the record, there is a fellow, on eBay, that lists a tach drive alternator. It was on there in the not too distant past and a current search may turn up some results. I merely stumbled onto it while engaged in another search and it may have been relisted. He wanted quite a bit for them but what the heck if it is what you need and want go for it. It was something in the order of $300.00. BC****************8 "British Classics" 14703... MORE

These are, I think, NLA. I bought a new one, Genuine Lucas, years ago, when they were still being made. Right out of the box it was DOA, so I opened it up and repaired it. Still works fine. I think if you're careful, you might be able to resurrect an old one, provided someone hasn't been there first, or it's not too badly corroded. If it's cheap, give it a try, but I think you'll have to go into it, rather than just a squirt of penetrating oil. "joe blxfstz" 14656... MORE
Question: Do you all feel it would be conceivable, or a good idea to buy a "frozen" (stuck) heater switch? Specifically: If it won't turn to the right and "click", do you think there's a good chance that some penetrating oil might do the trick? I know this is kind of a generic question, but maybe one or two of you have gone through it and "reanimated lifeless tissue." And since ther rest of the car uses multipurpose grease, which is semi solid, I find the best way to keep the two seperate is to have seperate grease guns. The steering rack grease nipple is at the bottom of the car, with the nipple accesable only from the top which I find is not practial to just dump 90 weight in the general direction of the zert... How do you lube the steering on a 60 bugeye. There is a zirc fitting and the book says to use 140 weight gear oil. I went to the car parts store and couldn't find a tool to inject the oil into the fitting. Any ideas? Thanks Bob Irwin rlirwn@... 14631... MORE
Hi Jim, Look very closely at the fuel line. I had a dodge that exhibited a similar lack of power when the throttle was depressed. I looked at everything and could not figure it out. After trying to do a fast run around the neiborhood I got the car up on stands and there was a tiny wet area near the fuel line. It turned out the line was rotting from the inside out and there was a TINY pinhole that did not seep when the car was sitting, but was creating a vacuum leak or air lock when... MORE
Having a little problem with bugeye right that I can't get back to until next weekend, so I thought I would see if the lists have any suggestions beyond what I've done so far. Car was running perfectly at beginning of week. Drove it to work on Monday - ran great. Started out Tuesday morning, but turned back to house after a mile. Ran okay through neighborhood, seemed a little "off" but I just thought engine was still cold. But on highway I tried to accelerate hard, car ran up to about 2500-3000rpms, and would "stutter" - no power... MORE
