Anyone on the list plan on discussing bugeyes or is this just gonna be the cry baby, listen to my opinion network. If so I can pull the plug tonight? Enough! Thank you! "HurtYChed" 5984... MORE

Willy, You as well as " Portland Bob" have gone right to the heart of the issue, a strictly tech. line of postings is rather dry to ingest. I don't care for the post that merely says " What do I set my points at" or " I need a nice heater box, cheap". I want to get a little familiar with the people I share my expertise with as well as my time. If the purist want a strictly tech line let them buy a good referrence book and bury thier nose into it. Let's see the purists... MORE

OK Folks, I have not left the list and I find it necessary to post on- list to the points mentioned about off-list flames. I stand for the BE purity that was the basis for forming this list. I send a non-flame note to ask folks to to keep it that way if they seem not to know the basis of this list. I get pretty testy if they snipe me (on or off list and respond accordingly off list... you see, I don't like to violate the list premise with such crap that should be unnecessary). I don't... MORE

Hi Everybody; I'm in the process of restoring a 60 Bugeye for summer driving, car shows and gymkhanas. It will have a newly rebuilt 1275 engine with a 5 speed conversion. Trying to get it done in time for Sprie Spree. A few questions: 1) purchased 13x5 minilite wheels from the UK - any recommended tire sizes (don't want to flare the fenders) and type? 2) Thinking about switching from a generator to an alternator. I need to find out what an appropriate substitute would be and what would I need to do with the original tachometer? Does anybody... MORE

Roger that on not wandering off topic...;-) I'm in Tucson, Arizona. For some **really** old photos of the car, go here: http://www.datsuns.com/markwarner/ The Datsun engine that was in the car has been sold a while ago. I'm now in the process of bodywork, plus trying to figure out what "real" engine I want to install in the car for the long haul. The 13b rotary appeals to me, as does the much more expensive 20b 3-rotor. I'm also a big fan of the Nissan V6 engines. We'll see... Anyway, thanks for welcoming me on board. Cheers, Mark Mark Warner... MORE

You have seen what I run for dizzy and carbs for the 1380. I have the torque plate for the offset bore for a 1380. John Carey San Jose, CA http://pages.sbcglobal.net/jbcarey/NewJCarey/Gallery/history.html NG4SaleOTH@... 5848... MORE

What is the preffered distributor for 1275 engine that is to be modified? I will most likely go with the 1380 setup with su's, 5 speed datsun trans conversion setup. vacume advance mechanical? tia Mike "ashtin49 " 5833... MORE

Hi, Steve... First of all, welcome! :) I cannot help you on an original radio. Mine is a portable, modern unit which is completely removeable from the car so... hopefully, another lister more familiar with this will pipe up, in this respect. Same with an air conditioning unit, I am afraid...sorry. On the cooling.....bone stock system... Original 948cc Sprites were not well catered for in this respect. In summer temperatures in heavy traffic, they had a tendency to overheat with the two- bladed steel mechancal fans. They do a little better with the 4 bladed later steel fans. They... MORE

For the sake of clarity are you referring to the bumper within the front coil spring ( at the top) ot the one which fits under the shock arm? If this body piece is rusted out what shape is the rest of the car in? Brad "British Classics" 5817... MORE

Bob, As I recall, there a thick piece of felt (like 1/2 to 3/4 inch) and is used with the tire installed on the rim. No real reason to carry a rim back there with no tire...'-) There are also 2 straps used on 3 attachment points to secure the tire. Gerard "gerardchateau " 5805... MORE

Gilly, Haven't seen your name on the list before. You a lurker? Anyway, lurker or not, I had my 1275 "hot tanked" as part of a total rebuild back in November. Since I wasn't familiar with the process, I asked them to explain it. They indicated that, at least in their shop, this meant boiling the block (and head and all other parts) in a tank of alkali solution at 700F for 4 hours. Once the parts came out and cooled down, they then shot blasted anything that was left. This was AFTER the freeze plugs were removed so... MORE

Hi all I realize that these questions and things will frustrate the well know ledged mechanics out there, please bear with me, this is a new area for me.. Im a carpenter! Well I had a little time today so I put the gas tank in AGAIN, in my 59 bugeye (had some problems with the sending unit, AH SPARES replaced it very fast) and installed my new fuel line,, that all works GREAT (so far) I had illusions of grandeur when I bought the car that it could be a show winner, and it still will be in... I'm assuming that I need a new/rebuilt starter motor. What do you all think? If you agree, recommendations on where the best place is to get a new one would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Cliff AN5L23843 Baton Rouge, LA PS: When driving down I-10 between New Orleans last Saturday, I saw a red bugeye and a Jag XJ6 pulled over to help a midget in trouble. I was headed the opposite direction, so I couldn't stop. Did the Bugeye belong to a list member? Cliff Kenwood 5440... MORE

To make a silencer noisy using petrol, Not such a daft idea, but rather you than me this time. imagine this scene. 1927, 500cc single cylinder Sunbeam motorbike manual ignition advance/retard lever for magneto on handlebars hand flood the carb to enrich mixture retard ignition and swing engine over slowly to suck in mixture get confused and advance the ignition lever raise exhaust valve lifter to enable the engine to be swung over fast (this also allows a good swig of fuel to exit the cylinder head via the partially open exhaust valve) a good push on the kickstart... Willy, Glad to hear you sorted that out BEFORE you cut a new hole. I would have been surprised if the fit was not right as stuff fro AH Spares is usually pretty good (so I hear, anyway). I don't think there are any new gas tanks made with the drain plug anymore. I have ordered a few fro Morris Minors in the last year or so and have had the same experience. One reason it still shows in the ctatlog pic is that they are using the old stanby illustrations from years a go. I guess there must... MORE

-I just came in from Garage, Im spent LOL pushing pulling sliding around on creeper, banging my freakin head a dozen times ;) Your absolutely correct, I noticed that the top of the tank was very flexible, so I attempted to "adjust the angle" didnt take all that much. We'll chalk this one up to learning the top of the tank is very flexible$%!$%!$%!$% and I was not looking at the entire picture, it must have been bent in shipping, the tank has a lot of miles on it, it is made in CANADA shipped to England, and then... hi all me again I realized that My gas tank in my car was leaking, so I took it out, to have it fixed, a friend of mine pointed out that it was the wrong tank for a bugeye (the filler neck was 2 pc) The condition of the tank, and it not being the correct tank led me to the decision to order a new one from ah spares. I received the tank and tried to install it yesterday but it just doesnt seem to fit. My bolt holes all line up perfect, where the gas line comes... MORE

Willy- Glad you got the filler neck issue worked out....good! :) You can install the plug with a little work on the tank to make provision for same it you wish. Alternatively, you can send the useless plug to me! :) Cap'n. Bob (Ret'd) '60 Frog PilotRob@... 5374... MORE

William- As far as I know, the gas tank in my '60 BE is an orginal replacement the PO put in during the car's restoration about 10 years ago. It has a fuel drain to the right of center as viewed from the rear. The original tanks in both my PO'd '67 Sprite & '74 Midget also had fuel drains. However, the new replacement tank I acquired for my '67 did NOT have provision for a drain plug. So, I am inclined to agree with Steve Mers that the newer tanks being supplied do not have drains. I do... MORE

Guys.. Referring to recent past posts wherein octanes were mentioned with respect to Judson blowers and/or low pressure supercharging in general. The following is reprinted by permission of Jacques LeClainche of the spridget autox team list or owns and drives a racing BE. See: http://members.cox.net/jleclainche/ It is edited just a bit to shorten it up a tad. "Cap'n Bob: The best friend of my Bugeye's last owner helped build the now 982cc race engine. While he could not recall the exact CR, he told me it was definitely over 12.0-1 and possibly as much as 13.0-1 and that they... MORE

Yep!! :) Depends on head preparation, etc. and how much time you spend (sustained) "up there" considering you are not getting the 10.5-1 "down there"! Matter of fact, you are probably getting (maybe) what the 8.8-1 stock engine gets "down there" with the milder stock cam wherein cylinder filling would occur at lower rpm vs where this would occur (higher rpm) with your longer duration 270 profile. This "effect" would be even more so with the 1.5 rockers which allow for a little more lift per degree of "on ramp" cam travel (automatic "cam upgrade"!) So "ping" on acceleration... MORE

Guys- I forget which site we were having a discussion last week on Judson blowers, so I am forwarding this message on octanes used in a high compression 948cc motor installed in a racing Bugeye owned by Jacques LeClainche who belongs to the Spridget Autox.Team List. This motor is most likely runnng between 13.0-14.0 to 1 as are a lot of racing Series "A"'s running "O-ringed" today. What makes the post interesting is that 30-32 degrees of total ignition advance (which is the normal total for a stock 8.8-1 1275 using normally available premium pump octanes) is still being... Ryan Like Alen said - stick with it and don't give up. My similar problems were solved after installing the $90 Pertronis Electronic Ignition Module. The original old wobbly distributor caused the points to never hold their settings. (I know all the suggested tools and parts aren't easy on a service mans salary.) I do know that I can now ger out on the highway again without worrying about being left dead on the road. Rodger T. "Rodger Talley" 5198... MORE
