G'day all Why is it you Yanks have to have your own unique way of measuring stuff. Where did this idea of a "US gallon" come from anyway. I don't suppose you have a "US inch" or a "US second" do you? OK, I can understand the confusion, but this is a British car and has British components measured in British units. You should be aware that referring to components in other languages (and I do refer to American) or even daring to carry metric tools in the boot (no, not trunk) can cause your Bugeye to have a... A UK gallon is 4.546 litres whereas the US is 3.785 litres. My understanding of the situation is that the US gallon is the old british wine measure and is 4/5 UK gallon. Both gallons have 4 quarts, as both have 8 pints although a british pint has 20 fluid ounces as opposed to the US having 16 fluid ounces. Just to make it worse the US fluid ounce is about 4% larger than the UK fluid ounce. Somewhere back in history the whole mess arose and ultimately everyone is likely to go metric as most except the US... MORE
Sorry Colin, Our kids only go to school 8 1/2 months a year on this side of the pond and a most of it is in being "Politically Correct", "non sexual discrimination", "Pro Teachers Union", "A Kennedy can do no wrong," etc, etc, etc. Reading, writing, and 'rithmatic are extra critical activities. The fact that a US Gallon is 4 quarts and an Imperial (as in United Kingdom) Gallon is 4 liters, and since they are teaching everything else, nobody can read when they grab the quart oil can that says it is only .9.... Howdy, folks. I just wanted to personally invite all of you to an event that we, the Cape Cod British Car Club, are hosting on May 22. It's called the "A" Team Invitational. Although all marques are welcome, it's a tribute to all automobiles blessed with having the "A" Engine as its primary source of locomotion. There's far too much to explain in this post. So, please take a look at the web site. Scroll down until you see "A" Team Spring Invitational. Click and learn. The reason I'm sending the personal invitation is because the 75 mile Poker... MORE
Doug....not to butt in, but.... the Frog was made back in '58 for basically British roads/speed conditions back then... same for our conditions here in the states when traffic moved more slowly "back when". Of course, the upgraded 1098's and 1275's did better over here speed-wise. And "over there" later on as well as the British developed their limited access highways as well. However.....upgrade same with front disc brakes, anti-sway bar, wider wheel s and modern (larger tires) and it becomes a nicely stable platform at high er limited access highway speeds, easily handled by a 1275/Datsun 5 speed/3.7... I can't tell you about what is included in the kit because I haven't bought one yet, but I about a year ago, I did an interesting red color study. My bugeye was originally Cherry Red with the Red interior. In talking to Biff Jones ( http://sprites2.homestead.com/ ) I learned that the red interior in his pristine '62 Sprite was the same red. Also, Bill French of South Carolina had pulled an original red interior out of his car and sent me a few samples. I ordered swatches from AH Spares, Victoria British, Moss and Heritage Upholstery and compared... MORE
When i was at Felders Restoration in hermosa Beach, I went and checked out his personal 2 owner frogeye that is absolutly perfectly original. It was last on the road in 1964 and it has less than 30,000 miles. Made me really want to get mine on the road. -Spencer "spencer_baker" 14843... MORE
Guys, concerning AH Spares: I just purchased some bizarre parts (complete inner assembly) behind the bugeye grill that NOBODY else had ... and they had it (reasonably priced, too) and processed the order real quick. Had it in a week. I've been taking a look at their prices and stock: Impressive. Even though it's in Britain ... they may become my supplier of choice. Maybe. Just wanted to add my two cents on my experience with them. It was good. Michael Modesto, CA Furryoldgrover@... 14838... MORE

Hello all; Just looking for some expert opinions. I purchased a 59 bugeye about 5 years ago from a neighbour who was downsizing with the intentions of doing what I had to in order to get it on the road. Prior to me buying the car it came off the road and sat in the neighbours garage for 12+ years. When I bought it I gassed it up, checked the fluids and started it with the first turn of the key. 3- 4 minutes later, the gas tank and water pump started leaking so I shut it off and... MORE
Hello bugeye gang! I'm a rookie here. I have a 1961 bugeye race car. I purchased the car from an older gentleman in Kansas last August. It came with two extra engines and trannys. It's rustfree equipped with a rollbar and racing suspension. Lot's of race parts. I just bought a master cylinder on e-bay today and that's all it needs to be race ready. Unfortunately last November I was involved in a head-on collision in Ireland with a government offical and broke both hips and 26 other fractures. The doctor doesn't think I will be able to get into... MORE

Clutch mystery solved! Just giving everyone an update regarding the clutch issues that I have been having in the last week or two. First of all, thanks to all for your helpful suggestions on or off this site. Unfortunately, my computer developed a problem, so I could not respond. Bob Webb's suggestion/recommendation was spot on. Thanks Bob for steering me in the right direction! What solved the problem was, I removed the clutch fork slave cylinder pin and tried to replace it with a shorter one. The one that was in the car was already a small one (2.5"),... MORE
Hmmmm, didn't know the steering wheels could be restored. Please elaborate group. My "new" 59 BE that I just got has a steering wheel that is close to pristine and I've wondered how that can be. Not flawless, mind you, but it is so smooth and the depth of the gloss is noticeably good. Wondering if I could have my 58 BE steering wheel improved. Who would do it and what's the procedure? Is this something a paint shop would do? Secondly (now don't freak everybody), there's a picture in "Original Sprite & Midget" by Terry Horler on page... MORE
Question: Do you all feel it would be conceivable, or a good idea to buy a "frozen" (stuck) heater switch? Specifically: If it won't turn to the right and "click", do you think there's a good chance that some penetrating oil might do the trick? I know this is kind of a generic question, but maybe one or two of you have gone through it and "reanimated lifeless tissue." Hi I have a 1960 948 (Fogeye) sorry Bugeye for all of you in the US which has has a reconditioned Gearbox and a new clutch fitted. It changes up the gears fine ie 1-4 but is a real problem from 4-3 and 3-2. The clutch seems to work fine (no drag or juddering). The company who reconditioned the box claim it is fine even after visiting them. Has anybody got any ideas what it might be ??? Many thanx Chris Purnell Ipswich England "chrispurnell26" 14614... MORE
Hi all, I am looking into hinge kits for my frogeye and have looked at Speedwell and Minimania. Anybody care to comment how well either of these kits work with the front bumper? Update: Tried the same routine this morning. Started the car in the garage, drove it out with out any problems. Car behaves as normal. All gears work flawlessly. Clutch feel and action normal as before. I let the car warm up and try to drive it. Nothing! Try it for several minutes. Still no go. Had someone look to see if the driveshaft is turning? Nope. Driveshaft is not turning. Clutch pedal feels as before, normal. I turn off the engine and let the car cool down for 5-10 minutes. This time I try to start the car while... MORE
