This morning I posted on the Bugeye site several pictures of the original Alexander Sprites. There were only 100 aluminum castings of this head ever made and most of the heads were installed on Alexander Turners. I purchased head #88 about 12 years ago from a a racer out of Canada who runs cross flow heads on his MGA vintage racer. Over the years I have been trying to find information about this head and the Alexander Sprites. The usual Sprite sites had little to no info available. I recently happened to find this information on a Turner site... MORE

You know, Doug...this is a very good question because I know that "early" 948cc Frogs did have a wear "problem" with the middle bearing. Thing is, I don't know anything about the various 948cc engines besides compression ratio changes, so I do not know exactly why the situation existed. All I know is the 1098 and 1275 motors went from a simple crankshaft pulley to a combo crankshaft/damper pulley. I shall have to wait for other more knowledgeable listers to post as to whe ther the early 948's had a journal "size" problem or a vibration problem (or both?)... MORE

You're welcome, Phil. I agree with Colin as I have never found this number under the wire harness to bear any relation to the VIN. As for the other number that Colin mentioned, I am not aware of it. Could this be an Aussie thing? Colin can you provide a link to the pics you mentioned? I have a 58 tub in storage that is sandblasted and I will take a gander at it today to see if I can find it. Jerry, There is one more spot that you might want to have a look at. VIN number is stamped right into the panel at the inside engine compartment, just above the top wiring metal clamp, that holds the wiring harness in place. You might have to use a bit of sandpaper to expose this number. I found this out after getting the inside of the car sand blasted. I have learned about some great new locations today, thanks Brad (BC). HTH Phil Aurora, Ontario, Canada "Phil" 12596... MORE

Hi Colin I was thinking of the spax kit for the rear but i realy like the front kit on the red bugeye in the pics what are your prices on both as i am in Canada You can reach me at kcocking@... Thanks Colin "Kevin Cocking" 12593... MORE

Ron... Frogs came with drum brakes and later conversion over to front disc type are often done....much better braking with the front discs. Southwind gas heaters are terrific. Love 'em. Our '60 Corvair had a gas hea ter... as did the Aztecs, Navajos, Cessna 400 series and Baron, Queenaires I flew. Scads of heat...right NOW!! This having been said, I've had no problems getting sufficient heat with the stock BMC heater arrangement, Remember though, Frogs had only a 6 gallon fuel tank! :):) "Robert E. Shlafer" 12592... Right on Bob. Reminds me of selling some British cars I've previously restored - they were all very nice cars, ready to go or show...and some guy always shows up and says something like, "$12,000 for an Elan +2?!?! Hell, I can buy Elans all day long for 5 grand." And he can too. And then tow them home and spend $20K more. "joe blxfstz" 12581... MORE

Pat Happy New Year from the right coast! Fun site! I note that you may have rear spring hanger issues (which are important because they provide so much structural rigidity to the car). Since the original floors are still in your car (I think), you shouldn't have as much difficulty as I did with this - the original floors at least help ensure that everything is currently straight. If you're replacing the floors with new panels, please note that the replacement panels from the usual suspects are not correct for the left side. I had to make modifications to... MORE

I don't rembember filling out a financial statement when I signed up for this list, but if I had, I probably would not have qualified. These cars are a hobby/passion and each indiviual decides how much of their own resources and time to spend on it. Some people have been working on their cars for 20+ years, and some just bought it fully restored direct from a shop. I have aquired my "spares" by buying parts at e-bay, ABFM, swap meets, going to British wrecking yards, Buying from other list members, etc. I buy acording to what I feel... MORE

My newly acquired 58 Bugye is home with us now but the registration has not been transfered to Florida. The Georgia Registration has it registered by the Body Number (AN 504348). The original plate with this number is inside the left door jam although it was painted over with a repaint (I imagine it is supposed to be a bare metal plate).I suspect the more appropriate Vehicle ID number is the Chassis number that is supposed to be on the missing Chassis tag in the engine compartment. Is there a coorelation between the chassis number and the body number?... MORE

I'm trying to install an electronic temp gauge on my race car. The supplied sensor is way too small to screw directly into the cylinder head. I bought a 3/8 by 1/8 reducer from the local hardware store. The sensor screws into the smaller threaded hole, but the larger threaded body is slightly too large to fit into the cylinder head. I assume this is due to some sort of weird British threading and size in the cylinder head. Does anyone know where I can purchase an reducer with a large threaded body that will screw into the cylinder... MORE

Mike... If I am not mistaken, Triumph TR2 & 3 and pre-'60 MGA's used exactly the same tail- light set-up as the Frogeye. Cap'n Bob Mitey Frog "Robert E. Shlafer" 12556... MORE

Hi All, Anyone know of a good shop to get one of my frogeye front ends redone. It spent much of its life amateur racing in northern ca. and it has the scars to prove it. I think it would take me forever if I did it on my own unless I bought new sides and front to toally rebuild it. The only really okay part is the top frogeye panel. -spence "spencer_baker" 12529... Mike, If you are not in a hurry, try this place. They also do custom harnesses as well. Price wise, a lot cheaper then your local suppliers. http://www.autosparks.co.uk HTH Phil Aurora, Ontario, Canada "Phil" 12476... MORE

I just bought a harness from British Wiring _www.britishwiring.com_ ( http://www.britishwiring.com ) They offer three levels of harness, from concourse correct, to concourse looking with discrete upgrade mods, to a good, usable harness that does not look like the factory harness. I found them to be very knowledgeable and courteous on the phone and they shipped the harness quickly. I have not installed it yet, but it looks like a very nicely made harness, with all necessary connections, light sockets, etc. Moss and VB buy their harnesses from "someone", but you do not know who that is. If you get the "british wiring" harness be sure to order, in addition to the main harness, the gauge light wires and bulb holders for the dual gauge and tach. Mine came without. I did bring it to their attention and they graciously offered to send me the extra wires. However they said their factory uses original harnesses to duplicate and these must not have had the wires in question. They may have changed the harness now but you should ask. I'm also kind of confused with the British Victoria harness. It's llike you are not getting a complete harness. And as it is right now my car has some of the taillight wires and the headlight wires and that is it. The moss motors harness seems more complete. "Mike Aarset" 12474... MORE

For track cars with limited wireing I always make my own. For the hotrods I always go with painless wiring kits. FOR the frogeye and the spridget I went with moss, broke out the solder gun and did a few "proper" modifications to fit my needs. -Spencer "spencer_baker" 12473... MORE

I searched the archive because I know this subject has come up a number of times. Didn't find anything. WHich wire harness to use???? I'm not doing a perfect restoration so I don't really care for looks. I want it to work though. British Victoria has one for like 200. Moss Motors is like 300. Anyone have any luck with a harness they have purchased that is under 300 bucks? Thanks Mike "Mike Aarset" 12469... MORE

A while back, I posted some questions about my Bugeye horn - the hot wire was shorted to the case and I was looking for someone with some previous experience with this problem. Since this horn is the original-type Lucas HF1849 I preferred to repair it rather than replace. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I made contact with a person in Georgia who did a quick and inexpensive repair on my horn - it now works just like new! His name is George Wolf, British Automobile Specialty, in Roswell, Georgia. Email address is gjwolf@... , and phone number... MORE

Bill: As I mentioned earlier, the red Bugeye (Frogeye) AN5L22473 that you saw pics of on my website are a chinese made race rated tire called Wynstar. They have worked out well for me.
