You've gotta love this one.A 1973 Midget that has been in storage for 20 years. One bid already for $500. The storage guys are now selling it, and some of their priceless gems include: 1) It runs but obviously will need a tune up. As it that's all it will need! 2) We did not drive the car and there is no fluid in the hydraulic clutch, but we were told the transmission, and brakes are OK. So please explain how you verified these bits were OK. 3) The only rust is where I am pointing in the photos,... MORE
"Oils ain't oils" Cheapo oil is exactly that...good base stock without benefit of the major mfgr's additive packages which make it "better" in preventing formation of acids, foaming, varnish/deposits, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. While the tolerences within our older engines were spec'd with petroleum based oils in mind...viscosity as much if not moreso, as film strength being in mind as a "boundary" between parts ................a quart of synthetic within 3 of petroleum can only be a good thing in terms of upgrad ing the mix by "reinforcing" film strength while adding "slipperiness" to t he whole. I have a 1959 for sale. The car is in excellent driving condition with only a couple very minor body blemishes that can be fixed very easily. The top and tuneau are in perfect condition and the engine has been restored a few years ago. I recently replaced the starter, generator, and put on a spin on oil filter adaptor in the past 2 years. It has very low origional miles on it and is good as a daily driver and close to concours condition. I can give more specifics to anyone interested. The sale is due to an... MORE
A UK gallon is 4.546 litres whereas the US is 3.785 litres. My understanding of the situation is that the US gallon is the old british wine measure and is 4/5 UK gallon. Both gallons have 4 quarts, as both have 8 pints although a british pint has 20 fluid ounces as opposed to the US having 16 fluid ounces. Just to make it worse the US fluid ounce is about 4% larger than the UK fluid ounce. Somewhere back in history the whole mess arose and ultimately everyone is likely to go metric as most except the US... MORE

Sorry Colin, Our kids only go to school 8 1/2 months a year on this side of the pond and a most of it is in being "Politically Correct", "non sexual discrimination", "Pro Teachers Union", "A Kennedy can do no wrong," etc, etc, etc. Reading, writing, and 'rithmatic are extra critical activities. The fact that a US Gallon is 4 quarts and an Imperial (as in United Kingdom) Gallon is 4 liters, and since they are teaching everything else, nobody can read when they grab the quart oil can that says it is only .9.... Liters. It's a good... MORE
Refer to picture at http://www.ado13.com/temp/se.jpg Measurements were done with a flexible seamstress measuring tape. Horizontal measurements are from the edge of the rubber taillight gasket to the tips of the arrow. Vertical measurements are from the edge of the body panel to the tips of the arrow. Over here, Colin, we measure capacity in U.S. gallons of which the BE holds 7.2. The factory service book says it and I believe because in 1965 I ran out of gas in my BE and just happened to coast into a service station and stopped at the pump. It took precisely 7.2 U.S. gallons and cost $2.00 exactly. I can only find reference to the 12cj engine equipped cars being 6 gallons and the later RBM cars are still listed as 7.2 U.S. gallons. There's an odd noise I can't identify coming from the back of the bugeye when the car is moving. Almost sounds like a muffled bag of tools bouncing around. It doesn't sound exactly metallic, but if you were ruling out sounds, you'd be left thinking that metal is responsible for the sound. It's not a click, grind, whine, rattle. Maybe a bit clunk-ish with a blanket thrown over it. It's repetitive... maybe 1-2 per second. My instinct says driveshaft related. Maybe u-joint? Or some slop somewhere? On to the stupid question you've all been waiting for... I want to... MORE

The nut will be exposed with backside sticking to tape, washer can held by making a pocket around it with the tape or a spot of grease. After you get it started you can then switch to the proper wrence either taped to hand or tie a string around it for when you drop it :-) "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14845... MORE

I just did a mental calculation, something like this. Hm,stops for gas at 100 miles; tank holds 7.2 US gals.; must not wait until it is dry to stop, so add a little fudge factor; shake about the brainpan and voila'! Out comes a guesstimate of 15. And that is the way it works. I like to stop about every 100 miles too, but I seldom get gas then. In 1966 I ran out of gas in my BE, was lucky enough to coast into a Mohawk gas station and stopped at the pump. It took exactly 7.2 gals.... MORE

Well... it's not a single cotton thread...it's three or four strands twisted around one another and soaked in copper coat (or similiar). This "amalgam" of soaked "fibers" were then placed on the gasket, normally between cylinders 2&3. The head was then installed and torqued in the normal way. The story goes that.....supposedly..... the block deck between cyls. 2&3 on factory fresh Series A motors was subject to "sinking" a bit until such time as the block was decked during subsequent overhaul, after which further "sinking" in this area did not occur. It was a long time ago that I... MORE

Hello all; Just looking for some expert opinions. I purchased a 59 bugeye about 5 years ago from a neighbour who was downsizing with the intentions of doing what I had to in order to get it on the road. Prior to me buying the car it came off the road and sat in the neighbours garage for 12+ years. When I bought it I gassed it up, checked the fluids and started it with the first turn of the key. 3- 4 minutes later, the gas tank and water pump started leaking so I shut it off and... MORE
I just used a piece unraveled from a multi strand electrical wire about 2 inches long. it is placed between the cycl on the gasket. it just strengthens the small area of the gasket so it won't blow between cycls. "haynesh2000" 14744... MORE
Hi List, I'm having a hard time sealing the cylinder head studs that go into the water jacket. I used Permatex teflon thread sealer, but can still see that the sealer has migrated out of the threads and under the gasket. Anyone have a product they like better? I want to avoid anything too permanent. Thanks for the advice from several on head gasket sealing! Cheers, Curt Fisher "cfisher1a" 14737... MORE
My head has .070 shaved off it. When I installed it, I painted the gasket with silver paint on both sides and placed a piece of copper wire , unraveled from a multi strand wire, between the cycl. It seems to have worked for 10 to 15 years without leaking. H Haynes "haynesh2000" 14725... MORE
Clutch mystery solved! Just giving everyone an update regarding the clutch issues that I have been having in the last week or two. First of all, thanks to all for your helpful suggestions on or off this site. Unfortunately, my computer developed a problem, so I could not respond. Bob Webb's suggestion/recommendation was spot on. Thanks Bob for steering me in the right direction! What solved the problem was, I removed the clutch fork slave cylinder pin and tried to replace it with a shorter one. The one that was in the car was already a small one (2.5"),... MORE
Hi Paul, Rear seal is the same, gasket set is different only on the front cover gasket. Better yet is not to use any gaskets and instead seal it up with Permatex Ultra Grey 599BR. All mating surfaces should be free of nicks and burrs. Figure for your bearing shims a gasket thickness of .003" instead of the paper gaskets of .010". Been doing this for almost 20 years with no gaskets. No leaks, either. Gaskets always leak. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 14733... MORE
BTDT... Oh, I agree, but my horn didn't and doesn't work without the little ground wire I ran from the steering rack to the radiator support bracket. It looks like the steering column is not grounded to the steering tube, and the little fitting the steering column attaches to, is surrounded with a plastic seal/bearing and with the oil/grease in the rack, somehow isn't grounded.
