I have to confess to being a huge hypocrite for the sake of a cheap chuckle. I'm a firm believer in the "it's your car, do whatever you want with it" school. We're not exactly talking Bugatti Royales here, afterall. I had the good fortune to meet DMH on a couple of occassions. It was my impression that he was always interested in modifications to his cars that were well thought out and well executed. I'm a member of the Nasty Boys and as I speak am in the middle of purchasing a Fiberfab Jamaican that was set up... MORE
See!! "Compatibility"......he can race, she can watch and participate in comfort (why not?) and both socialize and enjoy as in "party". Well done Tom and Sharon...as God intended and as it should be!! :):) ("Oh, gee...my wife made me do it.... oh, boo hoo!!" Yeh, right "girlyman"!!:) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 8208... MORE
THE WIFE SAYS THIS HAS TO GO! This car has spent most of its life as a race car. It was raced in the Bulova Sundown Endurance Races. I purchased it in 1980 and raced it in Vintage Car Racing until 1993. Motor was checked and freshened up after last race in 1993. Met my wife in February of 1994 and I guess her love for snowmobiles, put my car in storage ever since. I have kept this car maintained by starting it and bleeding the brakes yearly. I stripped the paint and had it professionally repainted in 2002.... MORE
There's a good story along those lines. Back when Brock Yates was organizing the first (and only real) cannonball rally, he borrowed a Ferrari Daytona. Needing a capable co-driver, he called Dan Gurney and implored him to co drive. Gurney said he really couldn't do something so flagrant and anti-social, and declined. Yates was disappointed, to say the least. Next night, Gurney called Yates to say he'd reconsidered. Social responsibility be damned, he wanted in. The rest, as they say, is history... Hey Ed, Been mostly lurkin for the past year picking up information about bugeyes. I've had a '60 bugeye in the garage in need of some work for longer than I care to mention (either no time or no spare cash). Anyhow I thought your Fiat comment was interesting. My bugeye has a Fiat engine and 5spd in it with dual side draft Webbers. I had a '68 Mustang, 289, 4 spd when I bought it and have to say the bugeye was just about as fast (chirped the tires in 3rd). Didn't drive it much since it was... MORE
Hi, CB... For sure the application could use a 5 speed, considering the diff may be the original 4.22 ratio, rather than the later 3.9 or even later (1500) 3.7. A larger diameter (155X13's) tire, would also be helpful in this respect, as well, assuming stock rims. Not only will the 4.22 appreciate the 5th gear, but your clutch will appreciate the synchro on 1st gear as well. Seriously, the Datsun 5 speed transforms the car. Not necessary but real nice to have. Runs more quietly, too AND...rebuilts (if you ever need one) are much less expensive (40%+-) than... MORE
G'day Bob from Troutdale Since you suggested it, I guess you are compiling the numbers? Sadly I am down to just 4 Bugeyes at the moment. Trying to cull the fleet so I can get more enjoyment out of the remaining ones. The Fright doesn't count - it has Mk III screen fitted. The race car doesn't count - it has no screen at all. AN5/4165 has silver painted pillars on 9-stud screen. This car has covered only 14,000 miles since new, I know the screen has never been off the car. YHAN1/8/46315 has silver painted pillars. I have... MORE
As for the cockpit trim I have never seen anything other than the strip above the dash as covered in the same vinyl as the dash with cad plated posidrive head screws. Not Phillips, Spade or allen head. None chromed, gold cad or parkerized! The rest of the trim is polished anodized aluminum w/ the same fasteners. BTW, my '59, '60 and '61's ( yeah, I know, but that is what the registration says) all have windscreen posts that are painted a silver type color that would equate to what we use here as Argent. Since many of them... MORE
Rick, Take it from a BMC mechanic of thirty plus years that 34 degrees max advance at 3500 RPM is the magic number on an "A" series engine. Just hook up your timing light and pull the throttle until your finger chickens out and make sure that it is at 34 degrees at max revs. I don't really give a darn what it is at an idle. Most modern timing lights have a wheel on the back that tells you what your advance is. On race applications with sustained high RPMs we back it off a bit to 30... MORE
It looks to me that the set I want/need is V.B. 9-0720 to give me the plate for the engine that I can replace the "missing" plate on my engine with the one listed on my "Heritage Certificate" with. Larry, Brad, Chill, I could really clean up on the racing circuit. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 7959... MORE
As Bob says, "they all fit". From when they made the first BugEye to the last 1500 Midget to roll off the production line. Also the Diff from a Morris Minor and the Austin A-30 & A-35 will fit. These often come with the rare 4.55 ratio. If you want to take advantage of low gears in an autocross these are the ones to use. I use this in combination with a 5-speed trans. This combo allows you to come out of the corners harder and still have an awsome top end in 5th o/d. 3.90s work well with... MORE
Has anyone had any experiance with the new "Phantom Grip LSD" conversion? It sounds like the cure for a limited slip diff at an affordable price ($300) I currently run a 4.55 with welded spider gears. Have used this set up for years without the need of a limited slip diff. (except on daily street driving) After recently installing a Watts Linkage I have noticed that the rear end has become tight on entry and has become rather wicked to hold on to. I have been talking to several formula tuners (who like to tinker with suspension set up)... MORE
Jens... Good question. A pair of admittedly rare adjustable lever shocks just went for US$610 despite the "buy it now" price of only US$250! Somebody definitely came in late and went to sleep on this one, for sure or two guys got "caught up" in bidding against each other...something like that. But it proves the point that something is worth what the next guy will pay for it at the time it is offered, depending upon the extent of his needs or wants and the and the depth of his pockets. Hey...!! If I was racing, I'd use the Jacobs also!! Good stuff! But this is a simple cooking engine, like mine which spends most of it's time at 3k and tooling about town and country. All we're looking for here is less maintenance and a little more efficiency... and at reasonable cost!! I've used Crane (Allison) and PerTronix for years...both work just fine but yes, you gotta hook them up correctly. And yes, you can get bad unit. BTDT. They can and do get banged around in shipping and by clerks in stores. And yes, there are clerk's who... MORE
Sorry I missed meeting some of you at the ABFM. It always is a busy affair for our family (3 kids) and with a vintage race at the same time made it even more outstanding. The word was we had over 100 Healeys on the field! When Brittney (my daughter) and I parked we noticed a pretty Green Sprite parked in front of us leaking fuel down the back of their car! This lifted the paint all the way down to the bottom of the body! They had topped up the tank and the heat had expanded the fuel... MORE
Hi Bob walker I met you last weekend in portland, we talked about the childrens sticker on your racer. Glad to see you made it to the list!! I had my bugeye at the bcu show today and took a second place in peoples choice, hard to tell who is going to win an event like that. lol I had a b%$^ch of a day yesterday in the ralley, kept going out of time and losing spark, spent more time with my head under the bonnet than above it ;( finally figured out the backing plate in the dizzy... Hi Everyone, Long time since I've been to the Bugeye site since selling my Bugeye racer. I still have in my garage a few items which "maybe" someone would be interested in buying. I have: (1) original passenger seat (1) set of orginal side curtains (1) steering column shaft I'm open on pricing, I would just like to clear our my garage. If anyone is interested, plesse drop me a note at chibbard@... Thanks, Craig "spriterace" 7801... MORE
Listers, all 400 plus of you, Guess it's time I put my $.02 s worth in before this becomes ancient history. Willy is being too modest about the past weekends activities. He came in on Thur. and stayed at Bob Webbs through 'til Tues. and graciously allowed the wife and me to usurp the guestroom and ensconce himself on the spacious sofa, when we came in on Sat. Thank you very much Willy! Then he treated us all to a magnificent repast at one of Portlands finest eateries. It was the best steak dinner I have ever had and... MORE
-AHH LARRY look in my post, I had asked if anyone was going to be there buzz my cellphone, even PUBLICALY gave it out lol even flew out and back on an airbus, and didnt crash ;) met up with Robert Webb, what a great guy, ran into the show in his bugeye, and YES I hung around the bugeyes for a while, his was a pretty red with black interior, just about smack in the middle of the feild. The BRG bugeye with the bulkhead added was quite interesting and skilfully done. and yes I was droolin and... MORE
I am planning on being there. Look for my car in the comp/race car area. #73 Blue Bugeye, I would like to meet some of you and shoot the bull. We camp along the trees on the return road. Looks like hot weather. See you there. Rex Urban "Rex Urban" 7691... MORE
A person with a Bugeye race car for sale contacted me through my web site about this car. I have no financial interest in this car, just passing it on. G'day Bob The Bugeye mirror has an angled stem with the ball on the end. The mirror itself was a rectangle of glass (painted matt black on the back) with rounded corners, held to the stem with a two-piece claw bracket (painted matt black) and chrome bolt and nut. So you can loosen the nut, remove and replace the mirror. The Mk II Sprite (and very late Mk I's) had a steel backing moulded around the mirror glass and fitted to the stem. The steel back is painted in light wrinkle finish black. You cannot (easily) replace the mirror... MORE
G'day all Some Oz Bugeye history for you. The first Bugeyes exported to Australia left the UK factory on 2 September 1958. We have two known cars from this shipment, AN5/4165 (which I own) and AN5/4283 (belonging to David Lawrence). There cars were fully assembled, on 29 August and 28 August respectively. Yes, I know the assembly dates are in the reverse order to the car numbers! Neither of these cars has been restored, and they are in original condition, never having had even an engine change. Sadly, both are not the original colours, but that will be fixed... MORE
Capt, I was going to send this directly to you, however, as usual you don't know when to shut your hole (your choice of which hole I'm speaking of). So this is going to the lists you posted on and at least those who haven't already put you on their trash list will see the reply. Cap'n.
