You've gotta love this one.A 1973 Midget that has been in storage for 20 years. One bid already for $500. The storage guys are now selling it, and some of their priceless gems include: 1) It runs but obviously will need a tune up. As it that's all it will need! 2) We did not drive the car and there is no fluid in the hydraulic clutch, but we were told the transmission, and brakes are OK. So please explain how you verified these bits were OK. 3) The only rust is where I am pointing in the photos,... MORE
Dear list, I will be fitting a 1275 within a year to my Bugeye Vintage racer (yes that's legal in the groups I race with). I feel I should improve the cooling system at the same time. There are some very expensive aluminum radiators from the specialty shops, but ISTR suggestions of some aluminum radiators from modern cars that make good swaps. I didn't find anything when I searched the archives, so hear is is again. What subsitutions have people tried that work well, don't take a lot of monkey buissness to fit and plumb and are cost effective?... MORE

"Oils ain't oils" Cheapo oil is exactly that...good base stock without benefit of the major mfgr's additive packages which make it "better" in preventing formation of acids, foaming, varnish/deposits, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. While the tolerences within our older engines were spec'd with petroleum based oils in mind...viscosity as much if not moreso, as film strength being in mind as a "boundary" between parts ................a quart of synthetic within 3 of petroleum can only be a good thing in terms of upgrad ing the mix by "reinforcing" film strength while adding "slipperiness" to t he whole. Group, I just joined this group a couple of weeks ago and my doctor gave me some bad news yesterday. I can't get in the bugeye with my bum pelvis and hip I injured in my head on collision. I guess it's got to go! It's rust free and runs like a bear. I have two extra engines complete from clutch to fan. Two extra trannys and a set of racing carbs. I have to digest the news and maybe think of some way of entering the car without messing up my future hip and pelvic transplant. It may... MORE
G'day Michael I have a mate with a fully restored Mk I MG Midget, complete with the correct (and correctly coloured) steering wheel, horn push and cowl. He also has a genuine factory hardtop, rear seat cushion and Ace Mercury wheel trims to go with it. He is a perfectionist. Good thing is - he drives the car regularly, at least weekly, and comes on long country drives with the SpriteCar Club or Aust. Whilst it has won every Concourse it has enterred, he can see no point in it sitting in his garage. Next to, as it happens,... MORE

Hey peoplez. Thanks to my friend George back east who sold me the Beige cowl (steering wheel surround) and through in a beige horn push with it ... I'm really going to give it a try to duplicate that picture in Original Sprite and Midget showing the blonde steering wheel (but, using a bugeye steering wheel instead). Having said that, I thought it might be worth a shot to access a Midget specific site and see if anybody knows the exact color of paint to be used to get that blonde/beige color on the steering wheel. So what's the... MORE
Hi All, Here's a case of dedication and good fortune! Friend of mine from Virginia located a Fully restored Bugeye, all original, complete with soft and hard top on either Craigslist or Traderonline. Was sent a bunch of photos, which he forwarded on to me. It looked too good to be true for 6K. It was located in Kennewick, WA. Was about a 10 year old restoration. Original owner passed away and a friend was selling it for his widow. He flew out with his wife, they loved it! Bought it. Drove it to friends place in Puyallup. Made... MORE
G'day all Why is it you Yanks have to have your own unique way of measuring stuff. Where did this idea of a "US gallon" come from anyway. I don't suppose you have a "US inch" or a "US second" do you? OK, I can understand the confusion, but this is a British car and has British components measured in British units. You should be aware that referring to components in other languages (and I do refer to American) or even daring to carry metric tools in the boot (no, not trunk) can cause your Bugeye to have a... G'day all It's interesting that the eBay seller lists it as a 7 gallon tank. Only the rubber-nose Midgets had 7 gallon tanks, all other earlier cars had just 6 gallons. The extra gallon came as a result of the tank sides being 1" deeper. Of course, the rubber-nose cars originally sat 1" higher on the road, so tanks floor to road clearance didn't change. Fit a 7 gallon tank in an earlier car, or a lowered rubber-nose, and you need to be aware of this. And for the Concourse minded Bugeye owners - we judges can tell the... MORE
Does anyone have digital pics of the flooring that was stock on the Bugeye? I have an individual that makes latex masks for the movie industry that is willing to try to make an accurate mold of the flooring if I can provide him with some pics with some sort of measurement reference.I would love to make a run of flooring if possible.( a tape measure laying across it at different angles would be great) I would like clear pics of the "lift to fill" script, the ribbing over the hump, and the surround area for the shifter. Over here, Colin, we measure capacity in U.S. gallons of which the BE holds 7.2. The factory service book says it and I believe because in 1965 I ran out of gas in my BE and just happened to coast into a service station and stopped at the pump. It took precisely 7.2 U.S. gallons and cost $2.00 exactly. I can only find reference to the 12cj engine equipped cars being 6 gallons and the later RBM cars are still listed as 7.2 U.S. gallons. I really dont think this will help but Ill try anything....I sent my smoothcase to be rebuilt. It was shipped back and apparently delivered to my house (the back door) by FedEx last Friday the 22nd. I was out of town till about 10 am Sunday morning. Looks like someone stole it. While I dont think it will end up for sale on here or ebay it wont hurt to let you guys know just in case. If anybody sees or hears of one that might be mine I would appreciate a call or an e mail. Im rebuilding... MORE
No, but the picture just doesn't look right. Now I realize that Moss lists it at 345.95, unless you are concourse, did you know that A.H. Spares sells the one for MKII, for 64.50 lbs ($123.11), + shipping, which I have found the total for parts usually ends up less than Moss, without shipping. If you need "stock," (pronounced "Original, Concourse, 45+years old"), Well, that might cost a little more, but might be available...... (No financial intrest). I have a couple of extra trannys for my 61 bugeye. One is ribbed, the other smooth. I haven't been out to the garage for awhile but it seems at least one of the trannys had a hole on the opposite side of the linkage hole. Is it possible that the tranny is interchangeable with a right hand drive car? My other car is an old standard with right hand drive. I was just wondering. John - St. Louis "donuto63139" 14882... Doug....not to butt in, but.... the Frog was made back in '58 for basically British roads/speed conditions back then... same for our conditions here in the states when traffic moved more slowly "back when". Of course, the upgraded 1098's and 1275's did better over here speed-wise. And "over there" later on as well as the British developed their limited access highways as well. However.....upgrade same with front disc brakes, anti-sway bar, wider wheel s and modern (larger tires) and it becomes a nicely stable platform at high er limited access highway speeds, easily handled by a 1275/Datsun 5 speed/3.7... I can't tell you about what is included in the kit because I haven't bought one yet, but I about a year ago, I did an interesting red color study. My bugeye was originally Cherry Red with the Red interior. In talking to Biff Jones ( http://sprites2.homestead.com/ ) I learned that the red interior in his pristine '62 Sprite was the same red. Also, Bill French of South Carolina had pulled an original red interior out of his car and sent me a few samples. I ordered swatches from AH Spares, Victoria British, Moss and Heritage Upholstery and compared... MORE
