"Oils ain't oils" Cheapo oil is exactly that...good base stock without benefit of the major mfgr's additive packages which make it "better" in preventing formation of acids, foaming, varnish/deposits, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. While the tolerences within our older engines were spec'd with petroleum based oils in mind...viscosity as much if not moreso, as film strength being in mind as a "boundary" between parts ................a quart of synthetic within 3 of petroleum can only be a good thing in terms of upgrad ing the mix by "reinforcing" film strength while adding "slipperiness" to t he whole. G'day all Why is it you Yanks have to have your own unique way of measuring stuff. Where did this idea of a "US gallon" come from anyway. I don't suppose you have a "US inch" or a "US second" do you? OK, I can understand the confusion, but this is a British car and has British components measured in British units. You should be aware that referring to components in other languages (and I do refer to American) or even daring to carry metric tools in the boot (no, not trunk) can cause your Bugeye to have a... Sorry Colin, Our kids only go to school 8 1/2 months a year on this side of the pond and a most of it is in being "Politically Correct", "non sexual discrimination", "Pro Teachers Union", "A Kennedy can do no wrong," etc, etc, etc. Reading, writing, and 'rithmatic are extra critical activities. The fact that a US Gallon is 4 quarts and an Imperial (as in United Kingdom) Gallon is 4 liters, and since they are teaching everything else, nobody can read when they grab the quart oil can that says it is only .9.... Liters. It's a good... MORE
Colin, We might be looking at different units of measurement here. The manual for my 62 Mk 2 Sprite list the tank as having a capacity of 6 gallons (7.2 U.S. gallons,27.3 litres). So it was 6 gallons on one side of the pond and 7.2 gallons on the other side while speaking of the same tank. Nelson "Nelson Wittstock" 14909... MORE
Well... it's not a single cotton thread...it's three or four strands twisted around one another and soaked in copper coat (or similiar). This "amalgam" of soaked "fibers" were then placed on the gasket, normally between cylinders 2&3. The head was then installed and torqued in the normal way. The story goes that.....supposedly..... the block deck between cyls. 2&3 on factory fresh Series A motors was subject to "sinking" a bit until such time as the block was decked during subsequent overhaul, after which further "sinking" in this area did not occur. It was a long time ago that I... MORE

"On early crs with a steering rack grease nipple, inject SAE 90 hypoid gear oil with 10 strokes of a grease gun," "Clymer Sprite & MG Midger 1958-1979 Shop Manual,"page 17. And since ther rest of the car uses multipurpose grease, which is semi solid, I find the best way to keep the two seperate is to have seperate grease guns. The steering rack grease nipple is at the bottom of the car, with the nipple accesable only from the top which I find is not practial to just dump 90 weight in the general direction of the zert... Rick, I've not seen any either. I use the AN-73 / AN-81 spec for UNF threads. It gives a spec of 450-500 in/lb for 7/16-20 threads. That's a safe number. Doug W. "ah948cc" 14596... MORE
Is there a torque spec for the trunnion nut on the top of the kingpin? I can't find a number in any of my books. Thanks, Rick "Rick Fisk" 14592... MORE
Having a little problem with bugeye right that I can't get back to until next weekend, so I thought I would see if the lists have any suggestions beyond what I've done so far. Car was running perfectly at beginning of week. Drove it to work on Monday - ran great. Started out Tuesday morning, but turned back to house after a mile. Ran okay through neighborhood, seemed a little "off" but I just thought engine was still cold. But on highway I tried to accelerate hard, car ran up to about 2500-3000rpms, and would "stutter" - no power... MORE
I have my diff apart for the BE, all except the Crown gear assembly which is in good shape so it is staying togeather. In my factory workshop manual it shows "#35 Bevel pinion shims" that sit between the "#34 Pinion bearing distance piece" and the "#36 Bevel pinion front bearing". The problem is that the MOSS exploded diagram is not "exploded" the same way as the diagram is in this Manual. I do not see these shims. Am I missing something? Can any one tell me what part number they are, or how many of what I need... MORE
Hello group, my clutch is slipping in 3rd and 4th gear when I open the throttle (too) much. I'm running a stock 948 (just overhauled last year) with HS1-SU's combined with a rebuilt ribcase box I think the springs in the clutch cover are tired as the plate was OK as I reinstalled the engine last year Q1: Can I change the clutch to plate and cover to 1275-spec ? I like that system with the diafragm springs better, also it should be able to cope better with te torque of the engine as it is designed for a... MORE

Greetings! While I am not new to Healeys (presently own a BJ7), I just took title to a '59 Bugeye. Perhaps impatience is a sign of aging, but I don't feel like trying to learn on my own how things work/are done on the BE. Is there a quick reference/owner's manual available that describes the basic functions of the dash switches, installation of soft top and side curtains, and jacking instructions? Thanks. Come on Bob, you are smarter than that! Studs can be retro fitted, but to put in the cam bearing is a good deal of work and most rebuilders will not do it without just cause. If the block has rear cam bearings it can be assumed that it is either a GC block or at least up to that standard. Having the dimpled stud can only surely indicate that the studs are of the better specification of the GC. Having the cam bearings can at least allow the block to pass the duck test. them. What pressure should I run for pleasure driving with 175 tires? Originally, the Bugeye used 5.20 X 13 tires, which everybody changed to radials. the manual says that the 5.20's should have 18 in the front and 20 in the rear. (If you have the nerve and clearance to try.) I am using 185's (you "stock" people, they won't fit!) and 22 in front and 24 in the rear. engine and they have been conflicting. I was told at the AH club meeting that you could run one at 5,100 all day without hurting the engine and I... MORE
Redline for the 1275 is 6500 RPM, but that's for an engine up to factory specs. Why do you need to exceed 5000 anyway? Air pressure - to some extent is different strokes for different folks, but I'd start with about 26 front, 22 rear and see how I liked the ride and handling. A few pounds more if you drive hard. You can make your knobs shiny again by sanding with 600 grit wet paper and one or two coats of clear acrylic spray, but you'll have to refill the white lettering. "joe blxfstz" 14136... MORE
Mike.... The sensor IS best in the head (exit point or exit hose) but keep a manual switch (separate circuit) as a back-up in the event the auto circuit fails in the off mode. (BTDT) Frank Clarici has a Geo Metro rad. He knows the score on these and speaks h ighly of their more than adequate performance in his uprated 1275. Cap'n Bob Re-frozen Frog "Robert E. I agree about the voltage regulator. There just isn't that much electrical on a BE to cause draw. RE: I had trouble with my generator and got several ones with bad threads on the end for the manual tack. One had an Aluminium end and they had shot blasted the threads and 1/4 inch off. I ended taking a bad rotor to a rebuild shop who re wound it and re furbished the comutator and rebuilt the rest my self!! Less than $100. My reason for haveing to rebuild the generator was that the ground strap between the engine... MORE
I think the group agrees that if you have a generator w/ a voltage regulator (original configuration) that your regulator may be misadjusted and shorting out the battery when you turn off the ignition. Go to the ignition (electrical ) section of the shop manual, if you have one, and follow the instructions on adjusting the contacts on the regulator. The regulators are generally pretty robust but need adjustment from time to time. It's an easy procedure to follow and you will learn how it works or should in the process. Give the group some feedback on what you... MORE
"Beck-Arnley #" Ah....I perceive....that would explain it. The needles I quoted came out of the factory maint. manual Pete and apply to the 1275 (and I'm guessing) later 1098's ("CC") as they show o ne thing under General Data and another under Engine Tuning Data (the British strike again! Not at all that clear!!:) As I look further further under Gen'l Data, I see the 1098 "CG" model called for.... Standard "GY" Rich "M" Weak "GG" I do recall the 1098 my Frog came with was a "CC" and had "AN" needles. However, while it ran just fine, these... MORE
I'll second that. The book by Vizard is probably indispensable if you plan on tuning your A series. 1275 heads work well on 1098s but its not quite a straight forward bolt on job. "modsprite" 13729... MORE
I whipped out my factory maint. manual.... For 1098's and 1275's, the manual indicates fixed needles are: Standard "AN" Rich "H6" Weak "GG" I guess the "232" is part of a factory part # without the letter prefix?? I have a bugeye with a 1098 enine. When I got the car I purchased the Haynes manual for sprites and midgets. It seems to give memostof the information I need. I was wondering if there was enough in the way of additional information or tips to make it worth buying the "Tuning the A Series Engine" book or one of the SU carbuerator books. OK thanks its a 5 port head, do you have any links. I am not that sure why one would want to go to expense of getting a special head and not going for the 8 port units. IIRC according to Vizard they would give 20% - 25% improvement in BHP over the 5 port due to breathing improvements as the siamesed inlet ports limit the breathing. 8 port heads have been available over the years but never cheap. The last couple of engines I built for the sprite 1215 and 1420 I used old battery acid to clean... MORE
