G'day Michael I have a mate with a fully restored Mk I MG Midget, complete with the correct (and correctly coloured) steering wheel, horn push and cowl. He also has a genuine factory hardtop, rear seat cushion and Ace Mercury wheel trims to go with it. He is a perfectionist. Good thing is - he drives the car regularly, at least weekly, and comes on long country drives with the SpriteCar Club or Aust. Whilst it has won every Concourse it has enterred, he can see no point in it sitting in his garage. Next to, as it happens,... MORE

Hey peoplez. Thanks to my friend George back east who sold me the Beige cowl (steering wheel surround) and through in a beige horn push with it ... I'm really going to give it a try to duplicate that picture in Original Sprite and Midget showing the blonde steering wheel (but, using a bugeye steering wheel instead). Having said that, I thought it might be worth a shot to access a Midget specific site and see if anybody knows the exact color of paint to be used to get that blonde/beige color on the steering wheel. So what's the... MORE

Sorry to hear about your daughter's experience. My daughter was involved in a huge crash in her Honda Civic. Fortunately, she came out without a scratch, as did her two passengers. The accident was especially scary since she tangled with the mid-section of a loaded Chevron fuel truck. But, as small as a Civic is, the car is designed to be safe, and it gave up its life to protect the lives of its occupants. Hopefully your daughter will get over her very understandable, small car phobia. I'd hate to think she would let go of the "fun" part... MORE

Well all, My daughter has a Miata and I looked it over a few months ago thinking about putting that entire drive train and suspension in my Bugeye. I decided to go ahead and use the A-Series and 5-speed, and update the suspension with air bags. I didn't want to have to buy the Miata and see what I can do. Well, to all you Fathers out there, last night I just got the call all Fathers dred. Yep, Mr. Hahs, this is Sargent Phelps from La Mirada Police Department. You daughter has been involved in an accident, and... MORE

The trannies are interchangeable to RHD or LHD, slave or mecjanical, it merely requires a different front cover to do this. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 14886... MORE

I have a couple of extra trannys for my 61 bugeye. One is ribbed, the other smooth. I haven't been out to the garage for awhile but it seems at least one of the trannys had a hole on the opposite side of the linkage hole. Is it possible that the tranny is interchangeable with a right hand drive car? My other car is an old standard with right hand drive. I was just wondering. John - St. Louis "donuto63139" 14882... Howdy, folks. I just wanted to personally invite all of you to an event that we, the Cape Cod British Car Club, are hosting on May 22. It's called the "A" Team Invitational. Although all marques are welcome, it's a tribute to all automobiles blessed with having the "A" Engine as its primary source of locomotion. There's far too much to explain in this post. So, please take a look at the web site. Scroll down until you see "A" Team Spring Invitational. Click and learn. The reason I'm sending the personal invitation is because the 75 mile Poker... MORE

Could be your speedo or tach is not accurate. 5000 rpm should be nearly 75 mph. Suspension and steering are okay if in good condition, although a BE sharing the road with 18 wheelers is going to get blown around, and can be scary. The drum brakes are not up to interstate speed, and most have replaced them with discs. If you really do want to run at interstate speeds, an upgrade to 1275cc and 3.9 or 3.7 diff, or Datsun 5-speed will do the job. "joe blxfstz" 14866... MORE

Doug....not to butt in, but.... the Frog was made back in '58 for basically British roads/speed conditions back then... same for our conditions here in the states when traffic moved more slowly "back when". Of course, the upgraded 1098's and 1275's did better over here speed-wise. And "over there" later on as well as the British developed their limited access highways as well. However.....upgrade same with front disc brakes, anti-sway bar, wider wheel s and modern (larger tires) and it becomes a nicely stable platform at high er limited access highway speeds, easily handled by a 1275/Datsun 5 speed/3.7... Michael- I've been trying to figure out how the "Guys" drive these things at anything above 60-65mph...my poor little 948 w/ stock tranny and 4.22 RE is well above 5krpm at 65 and the suspension and brakes at that speed leave me w/ little/no confidence. I do, however, get a kick out of driving it around town but the big SUV's scare the S#%T out of me! Addictive little vixon.... Doug in SC.. dpecchenino@... 14864... MORE

Some strange things going on here. :-) First off, stock Bugeye springs have 15 leaves. The stiffer "rally" springs that Moss sells have 10 leaves. Your left spring is only using 4 leaves, as the bottom three are just being used as spacers. But why I wonder? Putting the three short leaves under the rest raises the spring mount by the thickness of the three leaves which would make the left side of the car lower than the right, assuming the equal "springiness" in both left and right springs. Hmmm...... The only really hard part about disassembling everything and... MORE

Thanks Phil but I already have a picture from Bob Webb (Thanks Bob). The question now becomes does anyone have a right front brake line they don't need? While trying to route it on the other side of the shock I %^*&$#&* the %^&*( line :-( It was one from the set that VB sells and they bend way to easy. The set overall is pretty good except for the right rear section. It is about 5" too long so you have to put an extra bend in it. Larry "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14755... MORE

Does anybody have a picture of the way that the brake pipe from the union to the right front brake is routed? How about a description of the route if no one has a picture? I need to see where it goes before I start bending. It looks like it goes around the back of the shock but the pipe I have does not look to be long enough for that. I'm using one of the kits as sold by Moss and VB. "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14748... MORE

Hello bugeye gang! I'm a rookie here. I have a 1961 bugeye race car. I purchased the car from an older gentleman in Kansas last August. It came with two extra engines and trannys. It's rustfree equipped with a rollbar and racing suspension. Lot's of race parts. I just bought a master cylinder on e-bay today and that's all it needs to be race ready. Unfortunately last November I was involved in a head-on collision in Ireland with a government offical and broke both hips and 26 other fractures. The doctor doesn't think I will be able to get into... MORE

Very reminiscent of a mk3 Ford Cortina axle location. I think this leads to a high effective rear roll centre and low roll moment so you may not need much if any sway bar. Drawback can be the side shift of the body with wheel articulation. May not be an issue with the Sprite but I have been offroad in the back of a landrover and it can be quite uncomfortable due to the amount of lateral movement due to this effect. Should be interesting to see the complete project and your impressions. Dave "modsprite" 14736... MORE

Hello all. Well, I finally got the rear end modifications done on my Bugeye. Here is the site where you can take a look at how I triangulated the rear end to give it full flexibility yet no side to side play. Therefor, no pannard rod required. I'll be adding the shock, sway bar, and airbag mounts soon. Can't wait to give it a try. Maybe in say...two months? Clutch mystery solved! Just giving everyone an update regarding the clutch issues that I have been having in the last week or two. First of all, thanks to all for your helpful suggestions on or off this site. Unfortunately, my computer developed a problem, so I could not respond. Bob Webb's suggestion/recommendation was spot on. Thanks Bob for steering me in the right direction! What solved the problem was, I removed the clutch fork slave cylinder pin and tried to replace it with a shorter one. The one that was in the car was already a small one (2.5"),... MORE

BTDT... Oh, I agree, but my horn didn't and doesn't work without the little ground wire I ran from the steering rack to the radiator support bracket. It looks like the steering column is not grounded to the steering tube, and the little fitting the steering column attaches to, is surrounded with a plastic seal/bearing and with the oil/grease in the rack, somehow isn't grounded. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 14721... MORE

I don't see how the steering shaft can not be ground. It is solid steel to the rack, which should be grounded. "joe blxfstz" 14719... MORE

The "hot" wIre from the horn connects to the slip ring in the steering column plinth. the brush rubs against this slip ring and carries power to the horn btton which is the switch. When pressed, this completes the circuit to the steering shaft which is grounded through the steering rack. Check, steering wheel off, whether the slip ring is hot. Just jump it to the steering shaft and the horn should sound. "joe blxfstz" 14718... MORE

Thanks for the response, Paul. I have a schematic too - my question is what are the physical components inside the steering wheel that complete the circuit. As I noted in my earlier note, the steering shaft is not a ground in my BE. So what is used as a ground to complete the circuit when the horn button is pressed? Also, I am looking for input about the horn brush as noted in my previous note. Thanks, John "jch1289" 14717... MORE
