There's an odd noise I can't identify coming from the back of the bugeye when the car is moving. Almost sounds like a muffled bag of tools bouncing around. It doesn't sound exactly metallic, but if you were ruling out sounds, you'd be left thinking that metal is responsible for the sound. It's not a click, grind, whine, rattle. Maybe a bit clunk-ish with a blanket thrown over it. It's repetitive... maybe 1-2 per second. My instinct says driveshaft related. Maybe u-joint? Or some slop somewhere? On to the stupid question you've all been waiting for... I want to... MORE

Hello Gang! Greetings! While I am not new to Healeys (presently own a BJ7), I just took title to a '59 Bugeye. Perhaps impatience is a sign of aging, but I don't feel like trying to learn on my own how things work/are done on the BE. Is there a quick reference/owner's manual available that describes the basic functions of the dash switches, installation of soft top and side curtains, and jacking instructions? Thanks. Hi everyone, newbie here. I've been following the list since December and have learned a lot. To bad the list didn't exist when I was putting the BE together. I acquired AN5L10863 in '75 and it's been running (more or less) since '83. I saw the posts concerning the repo VIN plates and thought I should replace mine since it is heavily damaged. I was surprised to see on my state registration AN 510369 as the VIN number instead of AN5L10863. I found an oval tag I removed from the car about 30 years ago with AN 510369 on... MORE

Jenn, Years ago, when my BE was stock, it said 1356lb for the weight on the registration. Somebody else here can probably give you the official number from the factory, but anything in the high 1300s should be fine. Mine is a 1960 and the # is 36725 I think. Production started in '58 with # 500 I think, so 18742 should probably be a 59. Again, somebody here who knows all the stats can probably confirm/correct. WRT the NY DMV - don't know where you are, but one thing I would suggest is that if you are in... MORE

Since you guys are on the subject... I acquired two 1275s last summer and have since striped them to identify parts for a rebuild, but I need some help with identification. What's the value, monetarily and performance wise for each part? Here's all the info in terms of markings from each part: Block #1 12G 1279 (casting #) 12V/671Z/L16462 Block #2 12G 1279 Crank #1 12G1321 EN16_ (can't make out the letter or number) SCP3117P8 Crank #2 12G1321 EN16T (T=tufrided??? what's this crank worth in $) As for the heads, they were easy... Both were 12G1316s... the smog version... MORE

The Chassis number was not on my front left rail (I sent picture to Colin). Thanks for all the good suggestions about location, but I could not pin it down from the car. It is a early 58 as evidenced by the studs on the upper windsheild for the top probable HANL5L4713 from paperwork, with a body plate in place of AN 504348, I ordered a certificate from the Heritage Motor Center, UK based on the body number I can confirm. Thanks for the help. One Question. What is the proper spacing and are there any dashes or hyphens... MORE

My newly acquired 58 Bugye is home with us now but the registration has not been transfered to Florida. The Georgia Registration has it registered by the Body Number (AN 504348). The original plate with this number is inside the left door jam although it was painted over with a repaint (I imagine it is supposed to be a bare metal plate).I suspect the more appropriate Vehicle ID number is the Chassis number that is supposed to be on the missing Chassis tag in the engine compartment. Is there a coorelation between the chassis number and the body number?... MORE

Good detective work, Bob! Be advised that I have also found the OE VIN in a couple of other places, try looking for it and get your tag made with this number to which you can have it inspected and corroborated for the proper number on your title. 1. Look on the backside of the dash, the VIN is always written in crayon along with the interior color. If the dash has not been cleaned and/or restored the number will be there. 2. I have also found the number, also written in crayon, on the rear shelf under the... MORE

First, I have found that their catalogue states that they do not accept returns after 180 days, which I can see their side of it..... That having been said, A little bird told me a story about a Bugeye in which a P.O. took apart a Bugeye to restore it in 1983. In 1986 he bought a windshield from V.B. for an early 58, (Dumb), and only looked in the box to see that it wasn't broken. He sold this car to its present owner, in another part of the country no less, in 2000. Frontally, the P.O. also... MORE

'tis true... headers go in a lot easier in RH drive cars for obvious reasons. :) I've always used stock diameter fuel lines up to 90+HP at the rear wheels using a 45DCOE and "HP" (I think the LP probably would have sufficed) Facet solid state through a fuel press. reg. set at 2.0psi. Had the Facet filter between tank and pump and a glass Filter King (later.. K&N billet) "in-line" prior to carb. Dyno indicated sufficent fuel supply at all rpm through 7K. Cap'n. Hi All, I just found the group, and had to join. I have a very sick 60BE that I found in Chico Ca from Paul Tullius...Lancia Guru. It looks like the car spent lots of time on the track, as it has dash placques from tracks all over northern cal. The registration shows that it was not on the street from 63 until mid 70's. Then it was disassebled and stuck in a garage in 1987. The motor actually looks okay internally....It is .040 over and was built by a guy by the name of Howe Cochran. If any... MORE

There are some non-adjustable ones too, Bob. You have a modified car so why not just replace the gen/reg. system with an alternator? It ain't hard and requires very little wiring modification. ******************* "British Classics" 12153... MORE

A 1960 Bugeye would have had yellow plates with black lettering as its first registration license plates. The black plates with yellow lettering started being issued in 1963. To register the car with YOM (Year of Manufacture) plates you'd need to find a set of yellow and black plates with the correct year sticker of 1960. The plates would also need to "clear" DMV, meaning there are no other plates, regardless of color, that have the same letter/number combination. YOM plates show up on ebay regularly, as do stickers. Check with the DMV before bidding, however, to make sure... MORE

I bought a bugeye sprite 2 years ago (restoring) & owner was going to find it or get a new one, he has passed away & I,m in need of an ownership/title & ID plates for a bugeye as new regulation here in Ontario Canada state; you must have a ownership or a notorized statment from owner to register a new one!!!! According to the VIN my car is a 1960.Not run in many, many, years; but the engine is not stuck. Appears to be pretty original mechanically. The body is fairly straight, however the rear deck has been modified for occasional seating. Very neatly done, Donald Healey's personal bug-eye was modified in a somewhat similar manner. The rh footwell will need to be replaced and there is some rust in the rest of the floorpan as well. Also a spot of rust near the top attachment area. Nothing terminal. Missing seats, top, lenses and maybe a few other items I... MORE

Cap'n, Your reference to having a school mate with a certain name reminds me of a funny thing that happened a couple of weeks ago at the British Legends Weekend, on Cape Cod - Sunday car show. Had our 3 Bugeyes on display. Our names on the registration card. A guy walked by, saw my name, and asked if he could speak with the owner. As it turns out, this guy (a past high school friend) bought one of my Bugeyes back in 1967. And still has it. I'm trying to get it back from him now. It's tough... MORE

Greg... The 948 is the A-Series motor that originally powered the early Sprites, 1958-62 or so, subsequently going to the "weak" 1098 "CG" and the later, "stronger" 1098 "CC", and finally the 1275cc motors in '67. It's a 43HP unit or if there is an "H" in the motor's identification number (metal tag) on the right side of the block under the valve cover "line" on a little "shelf" cast into the block over spark plug #2, then it's the later 8.9-1 (instead of 8.3-1) 48HP motor. Later 1098 or 1275 motos can be transplanted in it's place. Greg...you... MORE

Hi, Doug... Only thing to look out for (considering good compression readings) would be oil pressure first and secondarily coolant temperature. The former should be at least 60psi "hot" at anything over 2900 rpm. Idle "hot" (900rpm+-) should be at least 10psi. Assuming a reasonably warm climate, both the engine and gearbox will thrive on a good 20W/50 modern oil (Valvoline, Castrol, etc.) or 10W/30 for winter temps. The original thermostat was 164F (73C) though 180F can be used in winter for better cockpit heating. That is excellent compression for that motor. These engines came originally at 8.3-1 compression... MORE

if can more, thanks Willy. am thinking hard about changeover. actually think I've located a company that make an alternator inside the MKI generator body. That could be cool as my coil is mounted on top of the generator and using a regular alternator would force me to move the Crane 700 ignition from its spot. But I also found a great site with some nice Lucas electrics debugging information. Its focus is MGB's (for shame) http://tinyurl.com/22335 , but the techniques are the same. They note that you can bridge the two terminals on the generator and run the... MORE
