You've gotta love this one.A 1973 Midget that has been in storage for 20 years. One bid already for $500. The storage guys are now selling it, and some of their priceless gems include: 1) It runs but obviously will need a tune up. As it that's all it will need! 2) We did not drive the car and there is no fluid in the hydraulic clutch, but we were told the transmission, and brakes are OK. So please explain how you verified these bits were OK. 3) The only rust is where I am pointing in the photos,... MORE

Group, I just joined this group a couple of weeks ago and my doctor gave me some bad news yesterday. I can't get in the bugeye with my bum pelvis and hip I injured in my head on collision. I guess it's got to go! It's rust free and runs like a bear. I have two extra engines complete from clutch to fan. Two extra trannys and a set of racing carbs. I have to digest the news and maybe think of some way of entering the car without messing up my future hip and pelvic transplant. It may... MORE

Sorry Colin, Our kids only go to school 8 1/2 months a year on this side of the pond and a most of it is in being "Politically Correct", "non sexual discrimination", "Pro Teachers Union", "A Kennedy can do no wrong," etc, etc, etc. Reading, writing, and 'rithmatic are extra critical activities. The fact that a US Gallon is 4 quarts and an Imperial (as in United Kingdom) Gallon is 4 liters, and since they are teaching everything else, nobody can read when they grab the quart oil can that says it is only .9.... Well all, My daughter has a Miata and I looked it over a few months ago thinking about putting that entire drive train and suspension in my Bugeye. I decided to go ahead and use the A-Series and 5-speed, and update the suspension with air bags. I didn't want to have to buy the Miata and see what I can do. Well, to all you Fathers out there, last night I just got the call all Fathers dred. Yep, Mr. Hahs, this is Sargent Phelps from La Mirada Police Department. You daughter has been involved in an accident, and... MORE
First off, anything can be done with enough time and money. There is a local guy (Salinas CA) that has done this transplant but with a stick. He did not have to cut a lot because the car already had a V6 :-) I think I have some pictures around somewhere. If I can find them I will post them. It's not a real good fit but the car is very fast. The shifter comes out back by his elbow and is shaped like the one on a Cobra. Larry Miller "Larry & Sandi Miller" 14916... MORE
I really dont think this will help but Ill try anything....I sent my smoothcase to be rebuilt. It was shipped back and apparently delivered to my house (the back door) by FedEx last Friday the 22nd. I was out of town till about 10 am Sunday morning. Looks like someone stole it. While I dont think it will end up for sale on here or ebay it wont hurt to let you guys know just in case. If anybody sees or hears of one that might be mine I would appreciate a call or an e mail. Im rebuilding... MORE
There's an odd noise I can't identify coming from the back of the bugeye when the car is moving. Almost sounds like a muffled bag of tools bouncing around. It doesn't sound exactly metallic, but if you were ruling out sounds, you'd be left thinking that metal is responsible for the sound. It's not a click, grind, whine, rattle. Maybe a bit clunk-ish with a blanket thrown over it. It's repetitive... maybe 1-2 per second. My instinct says driveshaft related. Maybe u-joint? Or some slop somewhere? On to the stupid question you've all been waiting for... I want to... MORE
Wanted to thank everyone for the advice I received on installing resleeved master and clutch cylinders and with the resulting leak of the master cylinder. Especially the suggestion for using the nylon washers on the master - worked like a charm. The two make an amazing difference in braking and clutch. rlirwn@... 14893... MORE
I have a couple of extra trannys for my 61 bugeye. One is ribbed, the other smooth. I haven't been out to the garage for awhile but it seems at least one of the trannys had a hole on the opposite side of the linkage hole. Is it possible that the tranny is interchangeable with a right hand drive car? My other car is an old standard with right hand drive. I was just wondering. John - St. Louis "donuto63139" 14882... Could be your speedo or tach is not accurate. 5000 rpm should be nearly 75 mph. Suspension and steering are okay if in good condition, although a BE sharing the road with 18 wheelers is going to get blown around, and can be scary. The drum brakes are not up to interstate speed, and most have replaced them with discs. If you really do want to run at interstate speeds, an upgrade to 1275cc and 3.9 or 3.7 diff, or Datsun 5-speed will do the job. "joe blxfstz" 14866... MORE
Doug....not to butt in, but.... the Frog was made back in '58 for basically British roads/speed conditions back then... same for our conditions here in the states when traffic moved more slowly "back when". Of course, the upgraded 1098's and 1275's did better over here speed-wise. And "over there" later on as well as the British developed their limited access highways as well. However.....upgrade same with front disc brakes, anti-sway bar, wider wheel s and modern (larger tires) and it becomes a nicely stable platform at high er limited access highway speeds, easily handled by a 1275/Datsun 5 speed/3.7... Michael- I've been trying to figure out how the "Guys" drive these things at anything above 60-65mph...my poor little 948 w/ stock tranny and 4.22 RE is well above 5krpm at 65 and the suspension and brakes at that speed leave me w/ little/no confidence. I do, however, get a kick out of driving it around town but the big SUV's scare the S#%T out of me! Addictive little vixon.... Doug in SC.. dpecchenino@... 14864... MORE

Hello bugeye gang! I'm a rookie here. I have a 1961 bugeye race car. I purchased the car from an older gentleman in Kansas last August. It came with two extra engines and trannys. It's rustfree equipped with a rollbar and racing suspension. Lot's of race parts. I just bought a master cylinder on e-bay today and that's all it needs to be race ready. Unfortunately last November I was involved in a head-on collision in Ireland with a government offical and broke both hips and 26 other fractures. The doctor doesn't think I will be able to get into... MORE
Very reminiscent of a mk3 Ford Cortina axle location. I think this leads to a high effective rear roll centre and low roll moment so you may not need much if any sway bar. Drawback can be the side shift of the body with wheel articulation. May not be an issue with the Sprite but I have been offroad in the back of a landrover and it can be quite uncomfortable due to the amount of lateral movement due to this effect. Should be interesting to see the complete project and your impressions. Dave "modsprite" 14736... MORE
Clutch mystery solved! Just giving everyone an update regarding the clutch issues that I have been having in the last week or two. First of all, thanks to all for your helpful suggestions on or off this site. Unfortunately, my computer developed a problem, so I could not respond. Bob Webb's suggestion/recommendation was spot on. Thanks Bob for steering me in the right direction! What solved the problem was, I removed the clutch fork slave cylinder pin and tried to replace it with a shorter one. The one that was in the car was already a small one (2.5"),... MORE
List, I'm trying to lower my compression ratio enough to get it to hold a head gasket. Short of removing some material from the combustion chamber, I thought I might try using two head gaskets. Anyone had any success with this? I calculate that I'd still have nearly 12:1 compression ration with two gaskets, and I'm a bit leary of adding a another potential leak path and perhaps damaging the integrity of the gaskets. Just wondered if this has worked for anyone else. Thanks, Curt "cfisher1a" 14707... MORE
If you like the challange, go ahead and tear it apart, see what it really needs. It will take some imagination, and maybe some machine shop work, but you can rebuild it. Of course a later ribcase box is probably better and easier to find parts for. Or you can do the Datsun 5-speed, but where's the challange in that? "joe blxfstz" 14706... MORE
Paul...IMHO.... Datsun 5 speed conversion....now's the time. It will transform the car....first three gears are lower than later ribcase which will really be helpful to the smaller bore motors while 4th is still 1 to 1....and 5th will be much appreciated for cruise especially when using a 4.22 diff. And YOU will appreciate not only the car's greater flexibility but even more so, the peace and quiet of the gearbox which will allow you to better hear the engine's great exhaust note....win/win situation all around!! :) Cap'n Bob Basic Frog "Robert E. OK, I've been looking this over and have an idea I want to put up to everyone. I'll call APT tomorrow. But anyway, I was thinking about taking the rocker supports off, one at a time, and have a friend of mine wire EDM the mounting holes out .015" elongated. That could shift the entire rocker train over .015" and that would give me the clearance I would need. The roller is shifted over center the other way, so it would also center up the roller on top of the valve stem. The only thing is I would only... MORE
