All;
I previously posted the following on the Bugeye list and got some
great suggestions - particularly to add the fuel pump high on my
list. Ithought I would ask you all to see if you have any other
suggestions:
I put my 1959 Bugeye in the garage in December 1988 in order to
manage a new wife, a new house and shortly thereafter a new child.
Although a bit of mechanical stuff was done subsequent to that date,
it has pretty much sat in the garage.
The carbs are HS 1 1/4" that were "rebuilt" professionally two years
ago but not run on the road since.
Well, as of last Tuesday it was registered and is back on the
streets. All in all it running well except for a problem that I need
to diagnose.
The car idles perfectly and with no load revs easily to the maximum
RPM. It runs on the road reasonably well except for the following:
It generally feels a bit weak - but this a 948 cc motor!
When I accelerate with the petal to the floor, it gets to 5000+ RPM
and just dies down but not out. It feels like it has too little fuel.
Pulling the choke out makes it a bit better for a second - but not
anywhere near OK.
If I slow down or stop the car will return to its current "normal"
behavior in a few minutes.
I have just begun the diagnosis process and am interested in any
suggestions you may have.
I have already replaced the fuel filter with no benefit.
My possibilities:
Fuel Pump
Bad fuel.
Carburetor floats that are out of spec.
Fuel line that leaks air under high demand.
Bad vacuum line between the manifold and the distributor.
Sticking/malfunctioning vacuum advance.
Bad Coil.
Bad or out of adjustment points.
Any suggestions on where to look first and how to test would be much
appreciated.
