Yes, Bob!!!
You can make more backfiring noise by
further leaning out the mixture beyond
what it "should be", but I wouldn't
recommend it!! :):)
Many years ago, we used to "blast out"
a muffler to get more of this, as well.
"Backing-off" exhaust sounds were
considered mandatory if you wanted to
be considered "cool".
Of course, the muffler wears out in this
respect over time and use but....we
didn't wanna wait! The car had to sound
"cool"....today......NOW!!
Find a long hill and shut off the ignition
while allowing the car to go down the hill while remaining in high gear.
After appoximately 5-10 (depends on
how much of a "bang" you want!)
seconds, switch back on and the engine
should initially "back-fire", further blowing
out the muffler for a sportier sound!!
Now, knowing what I know today, I
wouldn't recommend this either, but it
DOES work!! Wait long enough to switch
the ignition back on, and you should be
able to blow the entire exhaust system
right off the header!! :):):)
One of the best sounding mufflers for
"back off" was the no longer
produced "Abarth Freeflow mufflers and
exhaust systems of yesteryear, courtesy of Carlo Abarth of Italy (the
later Stebros
were a lot more quiet.....weenies!:).
I shipped one of these to Mike MacLean
out in California to use on his 948 BE,
after finding two NOS Sprite Abarths
at Sports & Classics a couple of years
ago. Their diameter makes them suitable
for 948's only. Unfortunately, they never
produced the size required for later 1098/
1275's, though you could fit an MGA sized
unit rear unit on the later Spridgets with the larger diameter exhaust
pipes.
He's on the autox.team list and can provide a full report on the raspy,
race-car
like sounds of this terrific street-legal
(back then) "free-flow" muffler of
yesteryear, when sports cars sounded
like sportscars, 100RON+ gasoline was
readily available at the corner pump at
"reasonable" prices and men were men! :)
