It is possible that the Spitfire has a longer inlet manifold than the UK-spec 1500 Midget, as there is so much room under the bonnet of a Spit! The Midget manifold may have been made shorter to fit in the confined engine bay!! I recently bought a Head gasket set for a 1500 and the exhaust manifold to downpipe gasket had two holes in it whereas the exhaust only has a single downpipe. I assume that it was probably meant for a Spitfire...and following this assumption, it is also possible that the inlet manifold is different too. Dave "daveo138"... MORE

Hello Can anybody help? I've recently bought a semi restored sprite from the local council that was offered for sale/auction. I bid =A35 pounds as a joke and now the cars mine. My problem is the bodywork has been totally restored and resprayed minus the chassis plate. In the boot of the car was a set of number plates, so I filled in the v62 form from the post office and i've now got the registration document. It states that the car was first registered in april 66, the engine is a 1098cc 'a' series, but the chassis no.... MORE

Gary, Everything you listed is seems correct for a '66 Mark III Sprite except for the chassis number. The last MkIII carried chassis number HAN-8- 57945. T he MkIII series started with HAN-8- 38829. As someone else already commented look at the upper end of the right shock absorber mount plate and your real chassis number will be stamped there. Firstly I hate to be picky but what you have is sidescreens. Sidecurtains were the budget options on the cars and were hood materials as opposed to solid perspex / aluminium. I've found the best thing for getting rubbers into channels is aerosol silicone lubricant. It smells horrid but does the trick. Also make sure you are doing it in a warm environment and make sure the channels are super clean. And yes it's annoying that those joints come apart as you are fitting the things. I've experienced that. Jeremy '63 mk2 Sprite "Jeremy Cogman" 7385... MORE

Got my brakes all back together and they are working great - thanks to everyone for the help. Now I'm refurbishing the side curtains and have a couple of questions. First, is the Plexiglas panel closest to the windshield supposed to move. Mine don't on either side. Second, does anyone have any tricks on getting the rubber gaskets in? The bottom and the side closest to the windshield went in fine (except that they came apart at the corner - I guess I'll use super glue), but I'm having a heck of a time with the long part that... Yes. With the port restricted, when you 'floor it' the carburettor would rise slowly due to the restricted flow of air into the space below the piston. Varying the weight of oil in the damper would be the correct way to achieve the same effect. The spring controls how far the piston lifts due to airflow through the carb. Fitting a stronger spring will only ensure that at a given airflow the piston sits lower than it should. For example, if you bored out your engine, you may find that the piston hits the top of its travel at,... MORE

LOL! Good luck Gerard! And I suppose you would prefer the cream-coloured steering wheel too. Pretty hard to find, since most of them were melted down to provide supplies of Unobtainium for the manufacture of early MGB door handles. Still, this list is proably the best place to start looking. Excellent idea - thinking about it I know someone who can cut and weld the tailpipe. Thanks for the suggestion. One note, though. The Mk2 only has the one 'muffler', running front- to-back under the boot floor. I've seen the 2-muffler set up; I think that's Mk3 onwards. Tim. "timboreeves" 7340... MORE

I'd suggest that brake calipers and drums get too hot for powder coating. Powder coating melts at relatively low temperatures (thats how they make it stick to stuff) There are other, more appropriate coatings for brake components- similar to powder coating, but ceramic based. Try asking at race , hotrod , or aeronautical components suppliers. Alternatively you can buy 'brake caliper paint' in spray cans- sometimes its pretty good but usually its disappointing. Good luck! Eugene- You don't have an intermittent tach. - you have an intermittent electrical connection, most likely, external to the tach. Ask me how I know?! :) BTW, guns, cats and beer are acceptable list subjects, especially during "winter" when many Sprites "sleep". Of course, it can be overdone, eh?! :) Check those connections!! Pete, I have removed my 1500 flywheel both the way Haynes says "block of wood to block crankshaft" and used a pry bar through the starter ring to hold the flywheel. To use the wood, remove the oil pan and insert a 2x4 between the block and the crank. Using a pry bar, helped a lot with a second person to hold the pry bar, then popped the flywheel bolts loose. Anyone who does not have the good sense to keep their guns locked up where they should be is hardly going to remember to keep 1 or 2 Blanks as the first shot or shots in their clip or chamber. At close range you would be surprised how much damage a blank can do.The long and the short of it is that if you have children you should have your guns where they can NOT be accessed by them. The majority of gun accidents are caused by stupid people who have had very little or no training whatsoever who... MORE

The subject lines sums it all up!! Left this morning at 7:15 and drove into Dallas to Smiley's racing to attend a swap meet for race car parts. Much of what I saw there was dirt track related but many parts have good applications for the Drag Sprite. I had intended to hook up with Richard Wright from the Spridget list, but since I hadn't talked with him about where we should meet up and what we were wearing, it just wasn't looking to promising. While inside Smiley's, I called my wife on the cell phone to see if... MORE

Yo, Bob- I said the same thing, while forgettng Dave has a 1500. Evidently, these did not come with the hole which came with those bodies utilizing all "A" Series engines. Very strange!! So Dave will, according to his post to me off list, fabricate a hole to a "sized" grommet in his Xmission tunnel so he may check his oil level as do you and I!! :) Must be a real PITA to do this in 1500's without the hole.
