In the 65 Sprite is some type of floor covering, it is stitched to cover the tranny tunnel around the shifter and has heel pads sewn in, so I know it is not homemade. It is gray in color and looks like a cross of felt and scotchbrite. Anyone ever seen anything like this before?? Brad Brad Fornal 14201... MORE

I have the 65 going ok, still needs shocks and another starter the worst. But when I am driving it at about 60 -65, I get great billowing clouds of smoke at intermittent times. Not all the time, but enough to make me wonder WTF?? I know I am doing my part to control the West Nile virus, but damn!! 1275 with a hose running from the front timing cover can to the elbow on the intake for PCV. Don, Just removed mine from my 76 and my 71. took some doing, but I managed to break both of them out of there. If it is plastic, it sure is a hard plastic. Tried to cut through the arms with a long hacksaw blade. Couldn't do it. Finally used a brake spring pliers with a sharpened hook on one end to grip twist and break them out. Probably would have accomplished the same effect by just breaking through the strainer, but I wanted to coat the inside of the tanks and thought they would just plug up. "Brent... MORE

Kevin, Ed an helpful listers, I finally got to spend a couple of minutes with the Midget this evening and the wifey even consented to come out and pump the clutch pedal a few times. Problem is, the pedal wont pump. When you push it in, it goes to the floor and stays there. I pulled it up by hand, filled the MC and wifey pushed it down while l loosened the bleeder on the slave and fluid is making it that far anyway. I took the plate off the pedal box and oiled the heck out of the... MORE

To everyone in the US looking for "better" rotors (more "heavily" built): May I strongly suggest: Peter C. (aka "PPPPC") at Worldwide: nosimport@... Had a problem with rotors "going" in PerTronix equipped Lucas 25D4 beyond .028 plug gap ("cracked") using "usual suspect" types. No problem with those supplied by "The Shockman"....currently (funny word to use considering the subject!) using .030 plug gap... Like his lever shocks, his rotors take a licking and keep on ticking. Ordered 4 or 5 of 'em.....still using the first one! Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 13961... MORE

Well, I had just time enought between honey doos...."snap! easy kitty, put down the whip!"...to check and see that there was no fluid on the carpet, so it must be line or slave, right? So where was the puddle of (brake?) clutch fluid then? If it was on the carpet in the car, then the master is shot. If it was under the car the slave has been liberated or even more likely is that the flexible hose to the slave is shot. Otherwise the Black Widow must have drunk it! OK...before you all pass out from the oddity of me asking a Spridget question...how about some advice. I bought a new battery for the Midget today. The hot weather is dropping down into the low 90's so it's to start driving the Midget again. Real men don't cre about skin cancer! Got a little adventure added to life while I was changing the battery. I was scrunched over the fiender, head under the bonnet struggling with the posive battery cable when I glanced down (about 6 inched down) at the solenoid and there was the biggest black widow spider... I guess everyone has their favorite brand of oil, with many choosing Castrol because of what appear to be it's British origins. However, since it is refined in the USA from crude produced who knows where... The truth of the matter is probably that all of the major brands are good oils which will serve well. A Spring and Fall change of both oil and filter will likely ensure that you never experience an oil related engine failure - so use Castrol, Exxon, Havoline, Valvoline, Shell - whatever, and worry about more important things, like proper engine tune and... re: Jeremy Cogman's and DLancer's posts. Amen! Especially concerning periodic lubrication of the front end - absolutely; cheap insurance. Don't skimp on this anymore than you'd skimp on brakes. Both can be very costly. It's all a question of "pay me now, or pay me later".... and a lot better ride and more enjoyment for your buck if you pay small amounts "as you go" with respect to a strict program of periodic lubrication. One reason these cars didn't perform as well as expected over the long run in terms of longevity was the fact that most Americans, unlike... MORE

Boy.. I look forward to an answer to this from our Australian listers. Of course, those of us with more than a touch of intelligence have known for years.....criminals are by definition NOT law abiding citizens, thus.....gun laws only make the criminal's "job" that much easier. The intent of the goodie two shoes is excellent but, unfortunately, based upon ignorance. By the same token, we need more careful, "responsible" gun user/owners. Some corrections officer just shot his 3 year old to death, his gun having accidentally discharged while he was unloading it......damn shame...especially for the survivors who will live... MORE

Just instlaled a new gas pedal in my '74 midget. This is my first midget and I'm not happy with the pedal shape or location. Has anybody ever cut/welded a pedal to mount on the accelerator link? I was looking for something that would wind up looking/acting like the clutch and brake pedals. I think that type is called a 'floating pedal'. thanks...Bruce "redrider417" 13794... MORE

Interesting observations, Alan! Big trucks must rule the road, just as they rule our "skyways". They are heavier and lack the flexibility of smaller, lighter far more manueverable vehicles with whom they share space. In my particular business, they carry more "commercially" and always come first when there is a "tie" in occupying the same airspace "in time" as in approach paths to landings. Their fuel burn rate (along with their fuel "on board" under certain circumstances, also figures into this) is also taken into consideration by all concerned as well, but they basically lack "flexibilty" and need more... oil can go in two directions after it comes along the axle shaft and lubes the bearing itself... (1) is outward where it gets spun around on the hub and should be stopped by the o ring. once past that the paper gasket won't really stop much. (2) is inward exiting on the internal bearing face and going inside the hub where the inner oil seal is suppoed to catch it. replacing that seal is a pain cause you have to pull the bearing to get at it. but leaks can come from there too. you'll note that the... You may have a vacuum leak. Check all hoses to manifold/vacuum system and induction manifold, plus manifold nuts and gasket. If can't find anything obvious, try light water spray from kitchen type hand sprayer around hoses, one at a time, with engine running and listen for change of engine sound and look for white smoke out of exhaust. Can also carefully spray around induction manifold gasket area with drinking straw, for example, to avoid getting cold water on hot exhaust manifold - or perhaps they're on opposite on the 1500. Hi all,I tried this before but I guess it did'nt make it so here goes. While adjusting my rear brakes on my '79 Midget I noticed some oil leaking out at the drums. I wonder if the only fix to this is to replace the hub oil seals? In theory I would think no oil should get past the seal and if so what does the axel flange gasket and O ring seal do? Are they to keep out foreign matter from entering from the outside? Should I try to replace these two items before replacing the oil seal? PO... MORE

Ken, Being on the subject of rear end rebuilds. I was adjust the rear brakes and noticed some oil coming out of the axel at the drums. Am I correct in assuming that no oil should be able to get by the hub oil seal? If so than what is the purpose of the half shaft flange gasket and O ring seal? Are they there to keep out foreign matter? If oil is leakeng from the wheels isn't the only fix to install new oil seals? When I pulle my axel shafts out the PO had used silicone sealer... MORE

Removing the thermostat on a 1500 screws up the flow to the radiator. I don't know how exactly but my '76 overheats when I take it out. I haven't seen any blanking sleeves for 1500s. A Mo$$ or Vicky Brit catalog shows the proper hose routing. Once I got my electric fan blowing the right direction(Doh) My temp sits at 210. I have to say that the cooling system on Midgets does seem to be poorly thought out. If I remember right, the '75 is notoriously bad and was redesigned for'76. Jay Shaffer 13616... MORE
