My 79 midget's heater bypasses the shut-off valve, so I'm still getting heat at my feet in the summer. Does anyone know of a website that details how to connect the hoses to a heater from the radiator, while using the shut-off valve as well? Thanks! I have photos that I could send to anyone who'd like to help. Thanks so much in advance! -Brandon "magicalex9" 11888... MORE

Willy, Could just need proper tuning. I've never seen a pair that that I didn't have to set up properly. On the other hand, it's not unusual for old SU's to have serious vacuum leaks from worn throttle shafts. Check the end opposite the linkage side and see of you can see a wobble in the shaft. Try spraying a liitle WD40 or starting fluid on the shaft end while the car is running. If theidle changes, you've got an air leak and you never get them set up right. Gerard "gerardchateau" 11845... Has anyone done the MGB caliper installation on a Spridget? I understand it is a direct bolt-on conversion using MGB calipers and Spitfire rotors. There may be some modification of the Spit rotors. Anyone know about this? Does it bolt right on? What difference do you notice? Lower pedal effort? Better stopping? Is the front/rear brake balance OK? "tloutrec" 11803... MORE

Well, Peter: Maybe the calipers and maybe not. The pads require "friction" with the disc without the pedal being depressed to get the pads to "back off" just to the extent they do not "bind" (a bit) upon the disc after the brake pedal is released. So, it you have the car jacked up and have just released a just depressed brake pedal, simply turning the roadwheel will not be a conclusive "test". This is especially true with new pads which have all their original "thickness" and have not worn down even a little bit ("broken in", so to... MORE

Replaced the pedal return spring and the front rubber hoses. Still no full return of the pedal. The old hoses looked fine inside (even dissected them). Still, they were old. The calliper pistons seemed to still have firm pressure on the pads even with the brake hose disconnected. Had to push the pads back off the rotor to get the hub to turn freely. Should I have had to do that even with no fluid pressure applied against the pistons? The callipers didn't look in too good of a shape - old, rusty, bleeder screws seen better bleeding days,... all see if any of you have this in your spares pile. i need the copper oil pressure line that goes from the engine to the rubber hose coupler. or the other end that comes from the gauge. either one will do. can't make the guage work with only 1/2 of the link. thanks.. Hello Chuck Thanks for the reply. I am in need of 2 flat head screws. They are the two Phillips head steel screws that hold the parking brake lever and adjuster plate to the bracket that holds the whole assembly to the transmission tunnell. Thank You Mike PS Most of the time they are stripped pretty badly. kna331@... 11760... MORE

RE: In need of 4- 5/16-24 thread x 3/4" Flathead screws. Does not matter if Phillips or Slotted and can even be 7/8" or even 1" in length. Thanks Mike, Just read back through the thread (no pun intended) on this subject. I can get these for you and mail them from a supplier I have, but need to know how soon you need them and how far they have to be mailed. David A. Tony, Thanks for the inspiration but if it is so easy to find this Flathead 5/16 fine thread machine screw.. It is sooo popular that I just returned from visiting no fewer than 20 places trying to locate this common screw. I tried hardware stores, auto repair shops, gas stations, tranny shop, plumbing supply, electrical supply, motorcycle shop, building supply,Grainger, brake shops, appliance repair parts shop, and even a VW and Jaguar speciality repair shops. Oh and Home Depot...ha ha ha. Not to say that they are not made, they are by specialty manufactrues where the most inexpensive minium order I could find is $50. Not to... MORE

I too have recently been fighting with a seized e-brake handle off of a '79 Midget. Those 2 Phillips FLAT HEAD screws that attach the handle and adjuster plate to the square plate..... Mine of course are totally stripped out. Trying to locate replacements for these has proven difficult. Any Hardware guys out there might be able to help or point me in the right directin. 20 weight, huh? am I correct in assuming that say, 30 or 40 weight would give a stiffer ride? and it can't smell much worse than used gearbox/differential fluid. My garage still stinks from last weekend... "chuibuddy" 11685... MORE

Maybe because that is not a fact, just a statistic. Talk to one side of the argument (the Environmental Transport agency), and they=92d say it=92s 25% of the car=92s total. Talk to the other (say th e car makers) and they say that a car=92s production accounts for only 10% of its lifetime=92s pollution. (Lies, damn lies and statistics=85) I=92m no t making this up, see the Daily Telegraph from a few weekends ago (18th May). http://motoring.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml=3D/motoring/2002/0 5/17/emfror18.xml&sSheet=3D/motoring/2002/05/23/ixmot.html And it all depends on how you classify pollution. They would say that a properly maintained, new SUV will release less... MORE

I think I may have 'mis'-described the object. It had the hose that would go into the heater..going in (of course) to this water/anti-freeze/coolant holding container, that looked like a large overflow tank similar to those found on newer autos,..and a return hose out of it and back to the engine. whereas now I have hose out-back in, just eliminated the heater. The "idea" of having that extra bit of fluid (whatever the container holds) available and running thru the engine..that's my point or question. Waste of time? Or possible benefit? chuck n tx croche 11639... MORE

As I'm back to reassembling the '68 Sprite, I'm finding I'm missing a few bits that I'm not having luck finding new. I'm in need of the brake hose locks that slip over the frame tabs where the brake hoses attach to the frame. I need 3. I also need 3 of the larger fittings that connect the front brake lines to the 5-way pressure failure valve. The larger ones are not available on any of the brake lines I can find and the adapters I have found are too short to seat completely. If you have some old... MORE

Austin, it sounds like your rubber flexible hoses may be old and swelling internally with fluid, and preventing the pressure from releasing when you "unbrake". Guy "Guy Weller" 11490... MORE

Brake pedal does not 'return' when applied. Brakes firm - no sponge and does not sink to the floor. No evidence of fluild leakage at master cylinder, down pedal bracket or on the outside or inside of the wheels. Large resovoir fluid is clear. Hi Listers, I am swapping my frogeye front suspension for a later disc set up, and also adding an anti-roll bar. Most of the parts are available (at a price) but some for exchange only (eg hubs). I have been looking for some cheap used parts to exchange (to avoid the surcharge) and use any serviceable items. Are the (much) later rubber bumper midget front suspensions the same as the earlier midget ones? I guess the springs might be different - but what else? In addition, are the 1500 rear half shafts useable in a frogeye axle? Thanks Chris... MORE

Thanks Paul. Anyone know of an "affordable" specialist in the UK? Odometer is working, but the magnet is just snagging on the underside of the aluminium disc - I can see the scratch marks where it is contacting. There is axial play in the shaft that the magnet rotates on, about 10 thou. movement. Also, I can feel this shaft binding slightly - it won't spin freely. Seems like it might need shimming. Right on! I'll have to "second" the note by Jeremy Cogman on rollbars, though I dislike aesthetically what it does to the "lines" of the Frogeye. My Frog came with a bar welded in place and it serves the triple purpose of not only protecting the upper body "in the event", but torsionally strengthens the body (anti-flex) and allows me to attach a "windblocker" (rainblocker, if you will) which allows for more top down fun in less extreme weather conditions. It also allows for easy pushing of the car without using the windshield posts (soley) for this purpose while... MORE

Really, Bob K.? Now this is really surprising, especially for vehicles that go with "gray" or "orange" set-ups and lightened flywheels for upgraded motors. Haven't used the original T/O bearing for 20+ years since I went to "tuned" applications and got tired of pulling motors to replace carbon types which just couldn't stand up over time, while replacing perfectly serviceable discs and pressure plates. (I mean you've pulled the engine so why not renew everything....cheap insurance!) Of course, my driving style was a little different back then....though I was never into breaking tires loose in terms of acceleration despite... MORE
