Rob There are (surprise) two schools of thought. Classic, standard concourse, as it left the factory i.e. Slow, leaking and daylight operation only! (Sorry) Classic looks, proper engine, the right performance for the brakes and the ride NICE OR the classic sleeper, fast and fun: 1380cc, big brakes, dampers that damp etc etc. Follow your heart, BOTH options ROCK ! Paul, Your search for a tonneau cover just got complicated by the pics of the car. That is unless the pics have been reversed. Finding a used right hand drive tonneau cover in the states will be difficult if not impossible! I suspect you will have to Europe/England to find a source for right hand tonneaus. Tonneaus after the bugeyes are right or left handed. A left handed tonneau will not fit properly due to the steering wheel cut out. Best bet will be to get a small tarp and some small bungee cords to use till you can... MORE

Sounds like one of your rear brakes springs is rubbing against your rear hub. The springs are handed and some people install them reversed which will not clear the hub without giving the symptom you describe.. Gerard "gerardchateau" 8941... MORE

After many years of being a Triumph owner, I took the plunge and decided on buying myself a Midget, great looking car, great engine but I have one huge problem that is making my life a misery!!! A Squeak, yes a simple squeak, when I test drove the car I heard it and assumed it would just need a little copperslip on the rear of the pads. This I did, it still squeaked. I then felt that it could be the brakes binding as they didn't seem very good at all, so I replaced the calipers with reconditioned units,... MORE

Hi, My name is Mike Knaub and I am from the Long Island, New york area. I have owned a '63 Sprite MkII for 26 years. I do most of the work on this car myself, In fact no one else has touched it in over 24 years! I enjoy talking to other owners and just like to work on British cars. Over the years I have been on and off again with interest in my Sprite due to health problems. But now I am definatly ON again and hope to have the car on the road this spring.... MORE

Well, hopefully soon TL. People hear "supercharger" and they think "pedal to the metal" driving style but this is not the case, in my case (though I AM capable in this respect!!). But it won't be blowing doors off anything 'cause this Frog is for my own fun to begin with. Secondarily I have no problem "sharing" the road and am strictly a defensive driver. I am not competitive when it comes to public highways, at all. And just as important is the fact that while I "hold" a Federal License, it does not "belong" to me. It is... MORE

Have used both carbon and upgraded roller bearing types for years and years. Never a problem with the "rollers", and "smoother" action with slighty less pedal effort. Never a problem with the carbon types either, except on "upgraded" clutchi press. plates/discs. My experiences with the latter made me a firm "roller" fan. My .02. Cap'n. Charlie, Perhaps I should have said that I'm a fan of the original design. I have heard many stories of problems with the roller bearings which likely have been because of an incomplete redesign of the whole system. If one were able to put together a roller bearing with a compatible cover, and have the proper fork and pivot geometry sorted, I would endorse that design. Many newer applications of roller bearings depend on a quill or sleeve over the input shaft as a guide for the bearing. The Spridgets don't have one.So many times a newer, "better" technology... Dunno' about the release bearing, but judder on starting in 1st gear could be from oil on the clutch disc. Of course it could be from a lot of other things too... "tloutrec" 8847... MORE

Hello everyone - Well I finally got my 74 Midget back, complete with a rebuilt engine. Still some major & minor repairs needed before my first spin on the road in it. Specifically I need a brake master cylinder and a clutch master&slave. I was told that what I have now was un-rebuildable so I am curious if anyone out there has any new or used spares that they may want to get rid of. My car was been sitting for about 15 years so obviously all of the rubber piping is also going to be replaced. Any good... MORE

Nothing like a good drink in the comfort of your own home. We've just demolished a bottle of wine and tub of raspberry pavovla ice cream, having spent an hour looking for the dog in the dark, wet and muddy fields. He eventually toddled home on his own, where we had to hose him down!! Dogs!! The cats (Muffin and her niece Gizmo) are OK though. They refuse to go out in the wet Margaret South Lincolnshire (UK) mmbrock88@... 8776... MORE

I just bought a 66' midget, have changed all the fluids, all brake parts, hoses, and master/slave cylinders. So far, all is well. Its been a month or so of ownership, and I know I need a clutch replacement, and the engine needs to be re-ringed. The carbs were just rebuilt(SUs),and of course the common Lucas issues(lol). I have considered keping it all original, however, I think I have changed my mind. I am considering to go with a modern distributor, a newer engine perhaps, and new wiring/guages(not Lucas!) If anyone knows anything about this, has attempted it, or know... MORE

Hi Guys, Is it possible, within reason, to pull a rear hub without a puller - or do I have to buy one? I have been given almost new rear brake backplates, so want have to remove hubs to fit them (old ones are very rusty). Any ideas? Thanks in advance Chris Howes '58 Frogeye - in slightly fewer bits than last we spoke. "howes" 8679... MORE

OK Mike you got me... Anyone fancy a ride in a Midget that out-handles out-brakes and out- accelerates a Subaru Impreza Turbo P1 (based on the evidence of a track day at Bruntingthorpe last Saturday)? On a couple of laps I was showing 8300rpm in top on the straight (3.9 diff - 134mph...) Trouble is though, if I drive to London I will have to rebuild the engine before I go home... Sorry I made a mistake. The size of the lug on the wheel is a 3/8"X24. Atleast the standard size is. I just took one off of my midget and found that out. The studs on your midget may have been replaced due to the pewvious owner wanting to use the style of rims and lug nuts you are looking for. They are prone to seizing up and causing the studs to snap when one tries to remove them. You may want to invest in an inexpensive set of dial calipers, a TPI Guage (Threads per inch) and check... Thank you Jeremy and Ted for your help. I'll check out the info on the "silly" fluid but whatever it says I'm still going to use it. I have heard that it tends to feel soft on the pedal, but so far I have my clutch finished [yesterday] and it works great. I would have the brakes bleed by now but I can only find one bleeder screw in the box of parts. and yes some fluid spilled on the paint but it just wiped off and no harm to the paint job that cost so much. so far... On my '63 Sprite it's exactly 2 inches from the bottom of the badge to the leading edge of the ally embellisher on the underside of the bonnet. Are you sure about the silicone (or silly) brake fluid. Check the archives for the rich debate on this subject. "Jeremy Cogman" 8525... MORE

I had one pair rebulit by a machine shop which pressed out the pins, bored the door halves, pressed bronze bushings into the door halves and installed new pins. Elegant, but expensive. The second pair I rebuilt via home blacksmith engineering. I pressed out the pin, then drilled the door half and one ear of the body half to 5/16". The other ear of the body half I tapped 5/16" thread. Then assembled with a 5/16" bolt, marked the bolt, removed it and cut the threaded and head ends so they would be flush when installed, then cut a... MORE

Fellow Frogsters- Came across a restored 1958 Leaf Green Bugeye at the local Volvo dealer's "preowned" lot here in Stamford, CT. (800-281-8658, 203-978-5780 or www.stamfordvolvo.com) Car is spitting image of mine except for wire wheels but unlike mine is a "9+" on a scale of "10"! Absolutely no rust anywhere however, car is recent respray. Floors appear to be original unless somebody did an absolutely first class full floor welding job (always possible). Car is absolutely immaculate inside, outside and under bonnet, wherein all looks original. Body and engine ID plates missing. Did not get to check VIN number... MORE

Brake fluid turns yellow after a while, that's my guess what it is. Since brake fluid has a distintive feel to it, you should be able to tell by rubbing it between your fingers. Gerard "gerardchateau" 8349... MORE

John Here is what I did to my 1500. Bored it out .020. I understand that you can only go .030 on a 1500 so this would leave room for another bore later Standard pistons are dished and are 7.5 to 1, I went to flat top pistons making 9 to 1. Milled the head .080 should have gone to .100 though. I used a TSI 275-4 cam from TS imported Automotive. Of course all new rood and main bearings. Good idea to fit a new oil pump also. In addition to that installed a Weber DGV, headers and... MORE
