Bob, I completely agree with Gerard-REPLACE ALL THE BRAKE HOSES! These things typically rot from the inside out. Lots of us have had similiar problems, and found out later that the rubber inside the hose had rotted out, and left the debris in the hose-restricting the flow of brake fluid. Also, while you are doing this, get all new seals for all of the hydraulics-master, calipers, wheel cylinders, and do the entire system. Flush out the lines, and your brakes will be back to as new again. I consider brakes on our LBC's the most important safety feature, since... MORE

Bob, Get those hoses replaced! They may also be the cause to your pad problem. Old hoses become constricted inside and don't allow fluid to pass properly. That would hold your brakes on as well as cause a delay or failure for them to operate. Do the rear hose at the same time. If you have wide tires, you need to look at positioning of the hoses so they don't rub on your new ones. Gerard "gerardchateau" 6795... MORE

Gerard Thanks for the help. Does it sound like I need to replace the front discs? I will need to replace pads as the one that is basically stuck on the disk is quite worn. Bob rlirwin@... 6798... MORE

Time to inspect the brakes on my bugeye and found some things I have questions about. One of the rear linings is significantly more worn than the other. I guess this is either because they only replaced one side last time or the adjustment was not done properly. On the front I have disk brakes and have a several of questions. First, the brake hoses are almost worn through (apparently from rubbing on the tires). Any idea why this would happen and how to prevent it? Second, on the drivers side the disk rubs on the pads in a... MORE

I am probably giving you more information than you need, but on my 1973 Midget, the bolts holding the hand brake in place have nuts welded to the inside of the tranny tunnel with the screws installed from the cockpit side. You could get the correct size screws and nuts, then weld the nuts to the inside of the tunnel with either a TIG or MIG welder. I did mine with a MIG welder by drilling four small holes around the outside of the bolt hole, where after I placed the nut on the inside of the tunnel, I... MORE

The handbrake has lots of bolts / screws that work loose but it can all be accessed by taking out the seat cushion and sliding the seat back back. Take it all out and tighten and lube (I'm slowling learning American) everything and you'll be amazed by the difference. I think you may also have to disconnect the cable at the compensator but take the oppo to clean and lube that and the cable. "Jeremy Cogman" 6783... MORE

For those trusting folks that took my advice and deleted their file (like I did, sorry) and want it back, I had our MIS dept at work put it on a disk for me. Let me know and I will send you a copy if you need me to. Thanks to the many of you who were understanding, I hope not too many folks were as dumb as I was this morning. Brad Brad Fornal 6769... Hello all My 1971 MG Midget has a lose hand brake. It looks like with out taking out the driver side seat that a bolt has worked it's way lose, and has disappeared. I have tried to stick my arm up the tunnel from under the car but with no success to reach were the bolt once was. Is there a way to fix this or am I just going to have to live with it? (Maybe a large self taping screw????) Thanks Jason "Jason Gross" 6763... MORE

Morning, Mr. Fornal! It's 28 degrees in Stamford, CT; wish I was in Texas!! Agree on current Lucas "cheapo" stuff though I believe Peter C. of nosimports carries the "quality" replacement stuff, assuming such "quality" supply is available. I was having a problem with rotors "splitting" as they could not handle electrical potential of PerTronix if plug gaps opened beyond .028. Peter sent me several of his "quality" rotors. Found these much more "heavily constructed and am able to run .032 gaps with no problems in current stock 1098 "A" Series. Your remedy makes good sense, otherwise. I think... MORE

As far as to what was causing your sudden loss of oil pressure, I can only offer a few guesses as to the etiology. First of all, it is a positive displacement gear pump. These pumps are manufactured to very small tolerances and it is rare that they fail all at once. As the tolerances in any highly machined apparatus become larger due to wear, they tend to become less and less effecient, therefore, I would suggest the probability of a caststrophic failure of either the shaft or the key that holds one of the gears on that shaft.... Redoing the cooling system on my bugeye with a 1098 engine. Am replacing the thermostat and also putting on a new thermostat housing (the old one disintegrated when I took of the radiator hose. The problem is that I can't seem to get the old housing off. Looks like it should come off easily, but it won't budge. I have tried prying with a crowbar, banging with a hammer and even a little with a chisel where the gasket is all with no luck. Anyone have any tricks for getting this off, or do I just need to apply... MORE

I'm completing a rebuilding of my Bugeye's cooling system and came to a dilemma when replacing the thermostat housing. I'm almost positive that I have a 1098 engine. This would mean that the correct thermostat housing is one with a rounded top. However, the one that is on the engine (which broke off in my hand when I removed the radiator hose) has a flat top like originally came on the 948 engine. It looks like the one with the rounded top might provide a little more coolant flow. Does it really matter which one I use? Thanks Bob... MORE

Dan, I had to cut a camphor in the Spit disks to clear my TR ends too. I heard that the later Midget rack used a smaller TR end, and was tempting updating that too... but decided otherwise. I'm with beckers on this one. It sounds like the rings haven't bedded in at all *or* you have a breathing problem. A few questions for you: a) do you have a venting oil filler cap? b) does your rocker cover have a vent pipe? c) does the timing cover have a breather? If the answer to either a) or b) is no, then I'd definitely start there. If the answer to c) is no, then that would also help. Mind you, that timing cover breathers are often blocked and that would be consistent with your problem. I think... MORE

Rick has this motor bedded in - Sounds like you have alot of pressure coming from somewhere, you should not need to fit up a bleed back system. "Beckers" 6325... MORE

Michael; WOF? You in NZ then? Or do other countries have WOFs too? (Oz?) to answer your questions- 1- Significant oil leaks is anything which leaves a puddle more than a foot wide overnight. They all leak, its the way they are, and leaks are the least of your worries. 2- Dont worry about it. Tie rod ends and wheel bearings can be changed in a matter of hours, and cost only a couple of hundred dollars. More important is wear in the kingpins- wobble the wheel as if testing for wheel bearings, but look for movement between the... MORE

Hello fellow spridgeteers, Thanks for those who responded about my clutch woes. It was indeed the throwout bearing, the graphite was completely gone! I pulled the engine/tranny and replaced the throwout bearing and the clutch plate and pressure plate. Works beautifully! What a difference. Next problem tho is a scraping/grinding noise when I turn to the right. Noise is coming from the drivers side front wheel (left hand drive). I pulled the hub and found that the brake disc (engine side) is rubbing on the stub axle housing. Will a new set of bearings, oil seal and spacer fix... MORE

I assume the engine is in the car so first gear and the hand brake are about the only options. It's the way I went as mine nut spun off the engine adding more weight to rebuilding an engine yourself instead of having it done. HI folks I need some advise. My MG leans by about 1/2 inch on the drivers side. So I replaced all the bushings and the pads. I than installed the springs and flopped them right to left. Hello all, Since last week Ive lifted the engine complete with gearbox. This last week ive opened up the engine (and cried like a baby) Ive decided to have the cylinders bored and honed (too worn out for another option) and the rebuilder will place the pistons with crank. I posted a query sometime ago about a fast road engine, but the job of shipping the engine to England and back and the fact that I dont get my fingernails dirty have let... MORE
