Alex, I bought a used Spitfire gas cap off eBay for about $15 or so and it looks and works great. These gas caps are $40 from Vicky Brits new. The cap must have the base/filler, because this replaces the existing filler neck. I used the rubber hose from the old stock air cleaner to make the Spitfire cap base fit the rubber hose from the gas tank. I recommend this conversion to anyone who loses gas caps. Besides, it looks so much better. "rolando" 617... MORE

I'm redoing the interior of my bugeye and want to remove the handbrake prior to repainting (not doing a complete restoration - but I had rust on the floors so I thought I might as well repaint while I was at it). It looks like it might be easier to remove this rather than try to mask it for painting? Has anyone tried masking the handbrake? Are there any tricks to removing it? Thanks Bob Irwin rlirwin@... 598... MORE

I have a 79 MIDGET and someone, long ago, cut the hoses in the boot that took the fumes from the fuel tank to the charcol filter under the bonnet. The filter is also long gone, with a webber carb fitted. My problem is that by capping the line that permits air to enter the fuel tank as fuel is used, the tank wants to collapse on itself. Does the filler cap make difference? Can I use an earlier, vented, cap on the 79? Are they the same size as the earlier models? Thanks for the help, this service... MORE

I've JPEG photo'd some shots of the 'Mk2' relay system I made for the '72. Made the wiring loom up from a 1500 loom to suit the odd-ball chassis/engine combination. Would be willing to make up a complete kit of parts to just "plug-in" to a Midget, using new parts ordered from here in the UK if anyone wants one. Also includes fused relays in waterproof cases and a multi-60amp fuse system to help prevent fire in the event of a crash. Cost me about 50 to make the 'super loom' section from the switches all the way to... MORE

I got it, boy that sure didn't take long. If the stuff you're looking for is also quite watery, reddish, and sort of funny smelling. It may very well be an old commercial penetrating fluid marketed under the brand name of Kroil. ALso, you're in luck, because if this is the stuff you're looking for, it is still available!!! Two varieties to choose from, by the jug, or by the aerosol can. Personally I'd go with the gallon jug just so I could continue using the ancient pump oil can... sort of keeps the mystique thing going... K. C.... MORE

If you look at the firewall on your car you will see a mirror of the left hand holes and mount points on the right. For instance there is a plug for the steering column, and a large blanking plate for where the clutch/brake masters go. Mass production at its finest, were lucky the speedometer is not in the center of the dash ala mini. Chris Dunavan San Jose, CA 62 AH Sprite cdsuperg@... 500... MORE

Hi Ho, These details only apply to a 1972 1275 UK spec model. You may be able to do similar to others but you need to check first. I did not destroy any of the original equipment so I can always revert to as built condition. Later 1275 midgets 1973/4 had alternators as standard. I suggest you read it all first and make sure you understand it. Perhaps even take off your regulator box and identify what you will have to do. Well I did say FULL instructions, didn't I. Sorry! Checks to do first The regulator box is... MORE

k.C. I have a right hand drive and the master cylinder is on the right hand side. The car was built for it to go on either side , you probably have a blanking plate on yours mines on the left. Bob 60 AN5 Tampa MTGBRKR1@... 488... MORE

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but when using the mason jar filled with fluid apparoacd to brake bleeding, it is also advisable to start with the wheels farthest away from the master cylinder and work your way closer. This usually means right rear first, left rear second, right front third and finally left front fourth on a car where the master cylinder is installed on the left hand side of the car.... just a quick question... if the car is right hand drive, the pedals are aldso on the right.... is the master cylinder then in a... Don't open them all at once! Bleed them one time at time starting with the right rear wheel. Get a jar and a small hose, open the bleeder, have a friend puch down on the pedal to the floor. This will force the air and fluid into the jar. When he has floored the pedal, tell your buddy to hold it against the floor while you close the bleeder. Make sure you keep the master cylinder full. Keep bleeding until there are no air bubbles in the hose. Then move to the left rear and do it all over... MORE

Does anyone know how to get the rubber connectors that come out of the body in the footwells and connect to the defroster hoses off? Don't want to just pull hard in case that's not the correct approach. Thanks Bob Irwin rlirwin@... 470... MORE

Yes the master cylinder is on the right hand side of the car on right hand drive vehicles. Your instructions are quite correct, just reverse the sides if working on these vehicles Alan H. '61 bug-eye "alan hill" 579... MORE

Sent this out to the Bugeye list also, I am missing everything past the interior lever for the hand brake system on my 59 Bugeye. AH Spares has the cable, but I still need everything else including link rods, link rod lever, all pins and clevises (clevii?), and shoe levers. Anybody got brake parts for sale? Chris: Bob in San Diego explained to me some time back that you should be able to see a 948 cast into the block on the side if it is in fact a 948. Don't know, couldn't find that on mine, so I'm assuming at this point that I have a 1098. Waiting on brake parts in San Diego, Richard Even 59 Bugeye San Diego "Richard Even" 372... MORE

Having installed my Ford gearbox into the Morris Minor Van. I am unable to disengage the clutch. When I fit the cluttch cover the Thrust plate appears to pull itself almost all the way in . toward the fly wheel. The Release bearing has been renewed. As has the driven plate ( this is on the right way round) There is no adjustment left on the adjustment rod. ie its wound right up, giving me about 1.5 inches free play on the clutch pedal. On pressing the pedal, there is barely anything left, a little more foot pressure and... MORE

Fellow sprigeteers, My clutch failed on the road, but I managed to limp home. Upon inspection I found the clutch fluid reservoir nearly empty and the slave cylinder leaking. I ordered a new one from Victoria British, when I compare the old one with the new one, I find the old one has a push rod with threads and two nuts apparently for adjustment, while the new one has a smooth push rod (no threads or nuts). In addition, when I look through the shop manuals I find no mention of any adjustments for the slave cylinder push rods.... MORE

I've found that you can take a dremel tool or similar and with a cut off disk make a slot in the head to fit your flat screw driver. Then screw it in and out makes it real easy. I've had two fail, one from electrics and the other mechanical. Jon Ca "Bonnie Paschke" 336... MORE

Jason, Back off the wheel nut and spray some type of penetrating fluid (of your choice) on the splines, let sit over night. Back the nut off till it covers the end of the shaft, place your knees behind the wheel rim, place a small piece of board (short piece of 2x2) over the nut (must not touch anything else) and with a hammer give it a sharp rap while pushing the steering wheel towards you with your knees. With one or two raps it should break free. If you have a good deadfall (padded) hammer you can eliminate... MORE

I suspect that the steering arms would foul the discs (standard problem on Spridgets with big brakes) you can either: - 1. Bend the arms (not recommended) 2. Space the arms inwards (changes steering geometry) 3. Use rose joints instead of track rod ends (my personal favourite) 4. Fabricate new steering arms (make sure they're strong! - likewise will change steering geometry) 5. Mix and match of above... Personally I'd be reluctant to use frogeye stub axles on a really modified car - even the later stub axles aren't the strongest items... James Bilsland Charing UK "James Bilsland" 36... MORE
