All, Has any body made a list of the different bearings used in a Midget . designation like NJ 1-3/8 or size and type e.g. ID 1-1/2"x OD 3" x 1/2" W Roller brg. All the standard ones for Wheel bearings , Gear box , Engine - are there any more? can you fit alternative bearings ? Regards Alan "alan.east-jones" 11783... MORE

Nope... and even if you could by means of adapter plates and whatever else you'd need, not worth the trouble, in my opinion because you'd still have a 4 speeed. C'mon, I mean how much do you need 1st gear for anyway. If you want to do a swap in an A-series car, go for the Datsun. Everything has been sorted out for you already. It's full synchro, 5 speed, the trans is inexpensive and much nicer than the 1500 gearbox. I put one in my '72 Midget last year and it's a real pleasure to drive, especially on... MORE

Home re-bushing for SU throttle shafts Some while ago I copied this from a web site - but cannot remember where. Apologies to the Authors, if they feel agrieved by my circulating it here. The original has some colour photos to illustrate the technique. Anyone interested, I can send off-list as an attachment and include the photos . Havn't tried it yet myself but it sounds good to me! Bound to be people here with knowledge way beyond mine..my 2 cents would be probably not. seems teeth count alone differs within the 1275's and would seem to be more than just a gear swap. However..been wrong more than once. Wait for the folks that know for sure. Sound good.. wish it would work. chuck n tx croche 11747... MORE

Sounds to me like you need to replace the throttle shaft bushes. I'm about to do that on my SU's. It might be tricky to get the old ones out if you don't have access to machine equipment as they need to be bored out exactly in line. I plan to use a boring tool in my desktop milling machine. You should also check the throttle shaft for wear where it passes through the bushes. Mine will be replaced (and modified per David Vizard's ideas) when I reassemble the carbs. My carbs shined up pretty well by using white... MORE

Anybody devised any good home remedies for loose throttle shafts on SU's? I have a few I'd like to see more snug. Also, I have a set that are very clean, but the aluminum is dark from cleaning is TSP. Any suggestions for something to dip them in to brighten the aluminum? I'd like to avoid the really toxic carburettor cleaner dip. Gerard Gerard 11728... MORE

It shouldn't be difficult. The electrics are fairly simple. That said I've got a mk2 and I can access the rear lights through the boot. You may spend quite alot of time on your back across the transmission tunnel doing the dash electrics unless you take the dash out, "Jeremy Cogman" 11703... MORE

20 weight, huh? am I correct in assuming that say, 30 or 40 weight would give a stiffer ride? and it can't smell much worse than used gearbox/differential fluid. My garage still stinks from last weekend... "chuibuddy" 11685... MORE

Changed to a TDCI for the same reasons Charlie, will happily keep up with the Gti's, leaves them for dead in 5th gear on M'way and happily returns 50 mpg. Dowels are used for location and positional timing, they should be soft not hardened or they can snap like a carrot, The drive is actually transmitted from the friction between the crank palm and flywheel caused by torquing up the bolts , even though in theory there is clearance between the shanks of the bolts and the flywheel , but little or no clearance between the dowel hole and flywheel, Positional accuracy of the dowels is in the order of 0.001" (one 'thou.) I'm not sure if its the same for your motors but there were timing marks on... MORE

Brake pedal does not 'return' when applied. Brakes firm - no sponge and does not sink to the floor. No evidence of fluild leakage at master cylinder, down pedal bracket or on the outside or inside of the wheels. Large resovoir fluid is clear. Where are you Chris? Why do you need to exchange hubs, do you mean stub axles? All front suspension fundamentally the same on all cars, different spring rates as you say. Yup you can use those half shafts. "Jeremy Cogman" 11394... MORE

Hi Listers, I am swapping my frogeye front suspension for a later disc set up, and also adding an anti-roll bar. Most of the parts are available (at a price) but some for exchange only (eg hubs). I have been looking for some cheap used parts to exchange (to avoid the surcharge) and use any serviceable items. Are the (much) later rubber bumper midget front suspensions the same as the earlier midget ones? I guess the springs might be different - but what else? In addition, are the 1500 rear half shafts useable in a frogeye axle? Thanks Chris... MORE

Hi Chris, No you have this right. I have stripped it down, removed the odometer unit complete with "pie pan" (thought it was aluminium, but logically it is steel). Then removed the little nylon ratchet lever, pinion and shaft. I am left with the spinning magnet which rotates in a bearing in a fancy little cruxiform aluminium casting. This is the bit with 10 mm "fore and aft" movement. Pushed down, it rotates freely without binding. Pushed upwards (towards face of speedo) it binds. When all is assembled, I think that when the flexible speedo drive cable is fully... MORE

Thanks Paul. Anyone know of an "affordable" specialist in the UK? Odometer is working, but the magnet is just snagging on the underside of the aluminium disc - I can see the scratch marks where it is contacting. There is axial play in the shaft that the magnet rotates on, about 10 thou. movement. Also, I can feel this shaft binding slightly - it won't spin freely. Seems like it might need shimming. Now that you mention that the engine is 'old', here's what I did with similar symptoms. Firstly I checked ALL the wiring, twice! - didn't help Then I re-adjusted the timing statically (statickly? staticly? - with the engine not running)- didn't help either. Then I adjusted the timing with a stroboscope - I noticed that I couldn't adjust accurately, It seemed as if the ignition 'floated' from too retarded to too advanced. of course this didn't help either, but I narrowed the problem down to 'engine trouble' I solved the problem temporarily by adjusting the timing 'on the fly'... Really, Bob K.? Now this is really surprising, especially for vehicles that go with "gray" or "orange" set-ups and lightened flywheels for upgraded motors. Haven't used the original T/O bearing for 20+ years since I went to "tuned" applications and got tired of pulling motors to replace carbon types which just couldn't stand up over time, while replacing perfectly serviceable discs and pressure plates. (I mean you've pulled the engine so why not renew everything....cheap insurance!) There you have it, toyperson! As can be seen from replies from fellow listers, there are so many variables that "normal" encompasses an arc about 5 nautical miles wide!! The guys in Jersey, NY, LA and London or engulfed in metro traffic situations get a helluva lot of excercise driving a stick shift!! They have many, many more shifts per mile than a guy driving the Blue Ridge mountains and similiar areas. And it is "tougher" on the mechanicals as you DO have to keep up with traffic (0-60 "sprints") or you DO become an "obstruction" to all in... MORE

Ah, the noises!! Honestly don't know for sure, Brad. There are springs in the clutch disc (4) as well as the pedal return spring in the cockpit (or pedal box in the case of the Bugeye). My feeling is the cause of this noise will become obvious when get the clutch apart. Let me know; I can learn something here. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 10980... MORE

Gerard, This info is extremely useful and I thank you very much for taking the time to reply. Supplementary question: so does the fuel line routing through the tunnel follow/run parallel to the rear brake line? I reckoned to effectively double-clip fuel/brake lines at the same couple of points in the tunnel for the sake of tidiness. I not going to be fanatic about originality, but as I'm just starting to put stuff back together I may as well do it as near as possible to the "right way". Again, many thanks. Regards, Tony pooley.
