I am probably giving you more information than you need, but on my 1973 Midget, the bolts holding the hand brake in place have nuts welded to the inside of the tranny tunnel with the screws installed from the cockpit side. You could get the correct size screws and nuts, then weld the nuts to the inside of the tunnel with either a TIG or MIG welder. I did mine with a MIG welder by drilling four small holes around the outside of the bolt hole, where after I placed the nut on the inside of the tunnel, I... MORE

As Gerard said, screw the adjuster up as far as it will go...then - rather than working on it in situ - remove the split-pin from the end of the rocker shaft, followed by any washers and spacers, and remove the rocker arm so that you can examine it more easily. Dave "daveo138" 6779... MORE

Hi folks, I've just come back from seven days away at my sisters to find out that the gas has run out brrrrr. Anyway, to the question. Not ideal to remove the valve gear without doing a head gasket but I've done it before and got away with it. "Jeremy Cogman" 6776... MORE

Hello all My 1971 MG Midget has a lose hand brake. It looks like with out taking out the driver side seat that a bolt has worked it's way lose, and has disappeared. I have tried to stick my arm up the tunnel from under the car but with no success to reach were the bolt once was. Is there a way to fix this or am I just going to have to live with it? (Maybe a large self taping screw????) Thanks Jason "Jason Gross" 6763... MORE

Tad, I haven't gotten around to calling them yet. I have been extremely busy with family, the holidays and such. I was hoping to get in touch with them last week, but now it doesn't look like I will get a chance until maybe next week. Relatives coming down out of the snow for a visit. I did manage to get the engine all apart. I was really suprised. The bearings and all journals are like new. They mic out to new specs. The honing marks are still visible in the cylinders. The only thing I could find was... MORE

As far as to what was causing your sudden loss of oil pressure, I can only offer a few guesses as to the etiology. First of all, it is a positive displacement gear pump. These pumps are manufactured to very small tolerances and it is rare that they fail all at once. As the tolerances in any highly machined apparatus become larger due to wear, they tend to become less and less effecient, therefore, I would suggest the probability of a caststrophic failure of either the shaft or the key that holds one of the gears on that shaft.... This problem is usually related to wear in the butterfly and spindle area. PS. Tell wife she should be grateful you're in the garage not the pub. Gerry "gerald_r_simpson" 6704... MORE

My restored 1970 Midget came with a roll bar which I wish to retain for safety. However when I have the seat back in what to me is the most comfortable position my head seems uncomfortably close to the bar making me fearful of the consequences of a rear end shunt. Does anyone know of the source of a suitable neat padded cover for the tubing of a roll bar? Obviously I could try making something myself but if there is a good looking commercial product this is likely to look more elegant than my efforts. "peter.balcombe" 6622... MORE

Reply to renaultdude Definitely something for me to do on my Midget. Question is now, what do you have on the rear end? I would like to see some pics (details) and descriptions on how to fit the rear with tube shocks Rick Las Vegas, Nevada acostahr@... "Hugh Acosta" 6611... MORE

Pete, You are pretty close on the engine, My 1500 weighs about 350, the Tranny weighs about 100, The differential along with the axle tubes weighs about 75 or so. The axles weigh about 5 - 7 each. The wire wheels w/o tires on them about 15 each, figure about 5 pounds each for the starter, alternator etc. Given the quantities you are quoting, I would say that you will be pretty close to a 1/2 ton. Since the truck is under rated at the fatory, you should be OK just be sure to pack as much stuff in... MORE

This involves transporting parts for a distance of some 400 miles (Maryland to Ohio) in my F-150. My truck has a 5.8L 351 V8, so power is not an issue. My question concerns the overall weight for the following parts: 2 engines 3 trannys 1 differential 2 axles 4 wire wheels other peripherals (starter, alternator) Can anyone give me a general estimate of what all of this will weigh? I'm guessing the engines are 200-300 lbs each, a tranny is approx 100 each, and the grand total should prob be around 1/2 ton. Does this sound right? Feedback appreciated.... MORE

Happy Holiday my dear listers, I came across a unique idea for a holiday gift for my "gear-head" friends. I am addicted to "Click & Clack, The Tappet Brothers" on National Public Radio. In between segments of their show they always play some obscure record that is about cars that is a crack up, but they only play about :30 seconds of it. I heard today that they have put together a CD of those songs. Billed as a collection of America's most disrespectful car songs. For example, Push my car by the Weatherheads, "...Borrowed some cables and tried... MORE

Two things tonight: 1) I keep seeing someone using my subject in their title (Rick's '73 Midget (As the Midget Dribbles). This doesn't upset, bother me, etc, but it does confuse me when I try reading the messages looking for replies to my postings. To the individual posting a reply/message, do you know you can just send a new posting to midgetsprite@yahoogroups.com ?? 2) I used a new set of feeler gauges tonight to check the crank shaft end float and with the standard thrust washers in place and got a 0.005" gauge to fit easily. So I ordered... MORE

Some time back I reported this horrible noise from the trans on over-run when hot. I rebuilt the prop shaft, fitted a recon diff (& rebuilt the rear suspension),still no joy. So I popped the engine & split the gearbox. As I did so,this mangled setscrew fell out from inside the bellhousing. Seems the noise was this rattling round beating up the clutch cover etc.It came from the backplate which explains the bad oil leak I've had. Also the sticky oil in the housing held the setsrew until it warmed up.Finally I guess the crank movement on lift off caused the ring... Hi Drew, I didn't even know John was doing the RX7 diff swap. From memory, the offset will give you an extra 3/4 or maybe an inch, but I think I'm being generous. I'll have a look tomorrow. I'm doubtful you can fit those Pana's under a SWA. I tried putting a 6 in. rim with 165 tires on a SWA '75 Midget and even though it sits higher the tires would rub. My buddy Chuck has a '68 Midget with the correct offset 5.5 or 6" Panasport rims and he had to roll the fender to clear his... MORE

Michael; WOF? You in NZ then? Or do other countries have WOFs too? (Oz?) to answer your questions- 1- Significant oil leaks is anything which leaves a puddle more than a foot wide overnight. They all leak, its the way they are, and leaks are the least of your worries. 2- Dont worry about it. Tie rod ends and wheel bearings can be changed in a matter of hours, and cost only a couple of hundred dollars. More important is wear in the kingpins- wobble the wheel as if testing for wheel bearings, but look for movement between the... MORE

Hello fellow spridgeteers, Thanks for those who responded about my clutch woes. It was indeed the throwout bearing, the graphite was completely gone! I pulled the engine/tranny and replaced the throwout bearing and the clutch plate and pressure plate. Works beautifully! What a difference. Next problem tho is a scraping/grinding noise when I turn to the right. Noise is coming from the drivers side front wheel (left hand drive). I pulled the hub and found that the brake disc (engine side) is rubbing on the stub axle housing. Will a new set of bearings, oil seal and spacer fix... MORE

I assume the engine is in the car so first gear and the hand brake are about the only options. It's the way I went as mine nut spun off the engine adding more weight to rebuilding an engine yourself instead of having it done. If the engine is out, Haynes recommends a block of wood crammed between crank and block. Rob '75 Midget "Rob Coxworth" 6224... MORE

I'm in the process of reassembling the front suspension and steering rack. One of the rack mounting brackets has a 1/4 inch thick shim. Does the shim go under the bracket oppisite the steering shaft or under the same side as the steering shaft? I can't remember if it's driver or passenger side. Any help would be great. TimS. Hello all, Since last week Ive lifted the engine complete with gearbox. This last week ive opened up the engine (and cried like a baby) Ive decided to have the cylinders bored and honed (too worn out for another option) and the rebuilder will place the pistons with crank. From from then on Im on my own with regard to how I rebuild the engine. I posted a query sometime ago about a fast road engine, but the job of shipping the engine to England and back and the fact that I dont get my fingernails dirty have let... MORE

Hey everyone, I came across what is believed to be a really good deal, and wanted to bounce it off you before going through with it. I can get a good 1500 engine and tranny setup, as well as front and rear axle assemblies with 4 wire wheels for a whopping grand total of just $250.00!!! This is one of those deals that sounds just too good to be true. I haven't seen the merchandise yet, but the owner says the engine ran good when removed a couple of years ago, and the wheels are from a '66. How... MORE

Thanx, Jason. I haven't seen a Spax kit for the front end either, but thought you might know something in this regard, I might not know (VERY possible!!).
