Just replaced the ball joint boot on my 1959 bugeye. Now need to add 90 wt. gear oil to the steering rack to replace what was lost. Manual says inject it through the nipple on the right side of the rack. Is there a special grease type gun I need to do this?? Are there fluid type cartriges to insert in a regular gun? My local auto stores haven't been able to help. Thanks, Red Devil CFickmour@... 4488... MORE

Pilot Bob, I drive a Republic p-47d "Thunderbolt" for fun.And still play with the firms A310's and Citation's when necessary. Our firm does charters for rock mussos tours, and a few of the G.P drivers,as well as those with a tad to many dollars!! After many years with Qantas I decided that I'd rather fly something less glam than a 747-400 ,and also to get as far away as I could fom the corporate bullsh*t that seems to be intrinsic in all commercial lines. I guess that,as one of my business partners said today,we also get to instigate our own... MORE

Laura, Chris, Peter, David, and all listers, Thank you very much for your information! My reply took some longer as I was abroad for work. I have just booked my crossing and found the Camping and Caravenning site in Chertsey Laura referred to. I'll call them tomorrow for a reservation. Anybody else planning to camp there ? Might be fun on Saturday already. I'll try to dress up my (boss's) car as a Midget, maybe I'll be allowed on the circuit, you never know (spirit of MR2 should be OK, not?). 1.WALKING I checked some maps (thanks again for... MORE

Gee, CB, that's all! :) Well, I'm sorry, but that simply doesn't qualify as enough, but I certainly know who to call when I have a question on flying! A "Jug"! Man, what is that like!? Paddle prop, I suppose? About 80GPH in economy (autolean) cruise and maybe 200GPH when you've got it opened up? Speaking of which, what sort of avgas are you using and how much MP can you pull on takeoff, accordingly. Guess the "purple"(?) stuff is no longer available? Accelerate to about 180 before you climb after liftoff? I'm recalling all this from a book... MORE

"Roger" Outcast message of "controlled contact" in rebuilds of "old" style engines (as in Series A units and the like). Am about to run in newly "rebuilt" Rivergate 1293 "tailored" for Judson blower. Initial 3,000 miles will be normally aspirated. Breaking in newly rebuilt Datsun 5-speed concurrently. Less "slippery" is best initially (first 500 to 1,000). Then more "slippery" for next 2,000 and finally, Oil Extreme synthetic at 3,000. Oil and filter changes at 500, 1K, 2k and 3k. Gentle driving for first 1K, progressing to "normal" after that, with a few short, heavy foot accelerations thrown in for... MORE

Hey all you guys (and gals) that told me that the lid not fitting on my 1500 was due to a weak support, you were right (of course) what is the best way to eliminate the problem? or is it one of those things you just learn to love about the car? Also When the car is cold, and in first or reverse gear I hear some rumbling and can feel it in the shift knob, but when it warms up this goes away, is this something that is expected, or do I have some other troubles brewing here?... Joe, First things first, sorrow and sympthathy from over here in relation to what happened to America - and the rest of the World because of it. I only hope that the Politicians wake up to what they have already done and stop it happening again. All Human life is precious and we only have it the one time around. If "I HOPE HE KICKS ASS" is the answer, then you will find my heart alongside yours at the start of the queue. My prayers are with you. RUNNING IN OIL IMHO you must consider the purpose of running... Chris, I echo your comments on the terrorist tragedy. did you replace the drums? That, and careful adjustment of the rear brakes (turn the adjuster until the brakes lock reasonably firm; unwind, rewind till they just start to drag, back off one flat). Did you adjust the pedal /pushrod adjusters? You use these to adjust pedal height and "slop" until engagement. Mike "Mike & Kerry Gigante" 4323... MORE

G'day, This seems so small after the New York lunacy, but it is hoped that something to divert our minds may be a good thing,' Does anyone have any hints on how to improve brake pedal firmness. All the brakes on my mk4 sprite have been replaced with new ( or fully recond.) The master cylinder has a new kit in it(after reaming out-the kit is suited to the cylinder) The back brake cylinders are both brand new. The front calipers have been serviced with all new kits etc. The brake lines are all new. The flexible brake pipes... MORE

You've missed a bolt, Terry. In addition to the three bolts in the side footwell (lined up vertically near the A-pillar) there's another bolt in the side of the footwell near the accelerator pedal (RHD) or clutch pedal (LHD). The bolt near the windscreen does not have a captive nut. Undo it with a spanner. And that's it! Good luck, G "Grant Bowyer" 4287... MORE

I have just overhauled the clutch hydraulics and, like so many before me, have been having trouble bleeding the system. It seems to me that the fluid is not being drawn down from the master cylinder to be pumped through the line (and thereby displace the air). I can get some air out initially but then no more air or fluid, and the level hasn't dropped in the reservoir. The flex hose and slave are new, master cylinder is almost new. All blown through, so there is no blockage anywhere. Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong?... MORE

Peter C. Thanks. I have a roller release bearing already. But I think I will change everything anyway. The clutch plate is a little thin and just before I broke the motor I had a little shudder taking off quickly in 1st gear. Doug 77 "Doug Pletcher" 4270... MORE

Steve- before you go pulling things apart, try tightening the four bolts which attach the driveshaft flange to the diff. pinion flange. If these come slightly loose they can cause an occasional 'ping' or 'click' noise as the flanges shift. Let us know how you get on. Cheers! G "Grant Bowyer" 4035... MORE

'Clang' is an unusual noise for mechanical components to make - more usually bodywork related. 'Bang' or 'Crunch' would make more sense in relation to transmission... I have an MGB GT that used to make a noise ('bang'!!) on the overrun because the differential was worn out and the planet gears were slopping around but that happened every time you lifted off... James "James Bilsland" 4014... MORE

Could be gearbox or differential related? Does it happen every time you back off? If not and if only under severe load (high rpm) is it the engine shifting & the carbs hitting the bonnet etc.... Just a guess... James "James Bilsland" 4006... MORE

Went racing in the MG series on the weekend at the Phillip Island GP track (the GP bikes and Superbikes use this track in their world champs) - cold and wet on Saturday, picked up 10 places on my qualifying pos before I was run down by faster cars late in the race. (my car is still in rally trim) In the pointscore race on Sunday, I was hit in the rear by an MGB GT that was all locked up coming into "Honda" (2nd gear corner after very high speed sweeper). Was in the midst of a fantastic... MORE

Jim, you make a good point when you say .......... ..The other problem is you can easily get carried away and want to start renewing everything because your new shiny shell deserves shiny parts. I work across the road from Austin Healey Spares & the temptation to walk 100ft & buy brand new bits for my frog after spending a whole weekend cleaning & painting some parts that would take 30 seconds to sign the visa slip for, is sometimes too much... I had to repair my shell as I couldn't buy a Heritige shell. I might have though,... MORE

Hi Margaret and all, Style may be a little as per Beat... But the MGF uses Metro suspension, steering, subframe(s?), engine, 'box (and prob. many other bits). (incidently I think the gearbox is a Peugot item!) The front hubs even come with a kind of 'dummy' outer CV joint for where the driveshaft would be in the Metro. Also thought the MGF design was more recent than the (doomed) BL/Honda partnership? Many Japanese manufacturers produce that class of sub-660cc-odd cars but don't export them, don't they? I can only think of the Suzuki Cappuccino that was also available, until... MORE

Midget front wheel bearings unfortunately don't 'adjust' in the true sense as they are ball and not taper bearings. You can give tightening the hub nut a go - if loose it won't be very happy anyway... Make sure that you replace the split pin (use a new one if poss). Only real solution for slack front wheel bearings is replacement - don't forget to refit the steel cone that goes in between the bearings (and which holds the inner races away from each other thus preventing 'adjustment'...). Its a bugger when you realise you left it out and... MORE
