First, I would practice backing up a bit before you put the car on the trailer. Second, who's trailer is it, did you borrow it from a friend, or perhaps rent it. Third, how far do you have to tow the trailer with the car on it. Fourth, considering your answers to the last 2 questions, what shape are the trailer wheel bearings in. Otherwise, if you are towing the trailer with a small vehicle, please remember when braking, allow DOUBLE the distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. Good luck. David A. ok..just talked to him...some of this cost includes the fuel pump and towing charge. He's repacking the wheel bearings, rebuilding the calipers, replacing hoses and boots, replacing the pistons etc. About $289 in parts then labor. Take the fuel pump and towing cost out and it's around 9 something. Gawd. "Virginia" 21000... MORE

Ok...here's what my mechanic is telling me is wrong with the front end. The left caliper isn't releasing fully which is causing the pull. He says it needs to be replaced as well as the rotors, hoses, repack wheel bearings, brake shoes, replace the pistons and says that it should be done for both sides. He's tellihng me it will run about $1100. Does this sound right? "Virginia" 20994... MORE

The car is located close to where I live so I went over and looked at it. I do not know Toyota engines but saw Toyota on the oil cap. It is located on a salvaged car lot. The PO had gone to a lot of trouble to weld in new engine mounts and modify the trans tunnel. Looks like he gave up before completing the project. There were lots of parts on it I wanted but I have no place to put the complete car. I have no use for the engine and trans, or I would have... MORE

Jens.... No tensioner on the dual chain set-ups, Jens. The tolerances were held very tightly between cam gear and crankshaft "centers" to be able to install the duplex chain "tight". This is supposed to allow the links to wear more slowly then the "tensioned" set-up. To swap over to a duplex tensioner set up requires a "plate" from an "A+" engine, along with the strip tensioner and timing cover for the "A+" motor. While this results in a more quiet system, the tensioner actually causes the links to wear even faster and cam timing retards accordingly over time, albeit... MORE

If you have an extra, I'll be more than happy to have it.Just let me know who to pay and how much the postage is. A guy in San Francisco has one enroute to me but I'll bet I'm not the only one over here in this swamp who could use one. It's so humid/sticky here most of the time, I hate to put it back together without some type of cover over the pinion. Thanks, Jack "austinbud2002" 20858... MORE

I'm over in the Beaumont area, east of Houston. I installed a new starter pinion gear etc. but, the previous owner either lost or discarded the little metal cover that attaches to the bellhousing where the pinion comes through. I found a picture of it in the Victoria British catalog but, there is no part number attached to it and nobody at their order desk could help me. It looks like a cup with a flange that has 3 holes in it to attach it to the bellhousing. If anybody knows of a car being parted out over this... MORE

I'm having my clutch replaced and the mechanic calls and says he needs a "starter pinion cover and bolts". I ordered what I thought was the entire starter pinion and now he says that's not what he needs. He says "it's not a starter part, it's the starter pinion cover". Does anyone have a Moss part number or an idea what this guy is talking about ? Thanks, Desperate in Texas "austinbud2002" 20814... MORE

Thankyou, Alan E-J!! You see.....there you have it men!! Right from the head honcho! The Lord, for God's sake!! Even the Lord will not waste time trying to figure out woman. Time is much better spent in a more contstructive undertaking for no matter how tough the undertaking, it will at least eventually get worthwhile results. Are we mere humans to argue with the Lord? I have used POR-15 for alot of automotive undercarrages. Be sure to follow thier directons. I have most recently stripped and sealed the entire undercarrage of my 69 VW bus, front axle beam and trailing arms, steering box, anti-sway bars, ect. All this is great for under the car where no U.V. rays will not hit the POR-15 for any length of time. They ahve topcoats you can apply to shield this effect and to add color. OK... You were lucky this time...just watch it 'cause there's more where that came from!!! Hey, this BE looks to be a real find, assuming the floors are good and there is no rust otherwise around. It's got a 1098 but even if it's the "cg" instead of the "cc", it's been nicely attended to in accordance with the contents of the ad. Wonder if it's got the later ribcase? Probably does considering larger clutch, etc.? Looks like a basically good, solid machine once the hydraulics, front end and driveline are checked out. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 20586... MORE

I percieve, Alan! (Al-u-milium) Just curious with no intent to be judgemental at all. Just wonder what everything would sound like internally when drivng with the top up. Guess it could certainly be coated with a sound deadener, of course. Anything which will stiffen the body has got to be a good thing of course. The "weaker" RWA rear end was a rear-end collision concern and understandably so, despite the more "well balanced" look of the car when viewed in profile. The fuel pump works best in the coolest environment it can find. However, if one were to locate... MORE

Because Ashley is better at publicising them than the retailers and we can bug said retailers to stock the items. I didn't know that the cooler hose bracket existed and will be investigating it now for my '63 with retro fitted cooler. Considering the volume of messages on this list, many of them completely unrelated to LBCs then I personally welcomes Ashley's very occasional posts and find them much more interesting than many of the other posts. Keep up the valuable work Ashley, how about tandem m/c pedal pivot bushes next, they've been NLA for about a decade. Jeremy... MORE

Hello Folks I just got my 1971MG Midget back from the shop. Running fine the other day. I drove it to work this morning and she was little sluggish. Like going up a hill I had to have the choke all the way out and pedal to metal just to get up a hill. The temp this morning is around 46 degrees I did have the shop lean out my carbs a bit because they were running very rich. Could this be the issue? Also would you have me richen them back up a bit till warm weather comes... MORE

Hi All The new parts are AHA8779 Oil cooler bracket hoses to wheel arch and AHA8074 Cover plate for pedal box. You all know how the cover plate gets brake fluid on the top of it, well now you can get a new one from your MG/AH Sprite suppliers. AHA8074 is new, just made today. It will be at Moss and Long Motor in the USA in about 2 to 4 weeks. But in England the suppliers will have the parts in 1 to 2 weeks. Well... At least your's engages the flywheel, Jens! You may have worn teeth on the Bendix along with wear on the ring gear. Or, maybe a worn battery down on power? Or leads or grounds than need a little clean-up so all that battery power gets to the starter which is only one part of this elecrical "loop"? Hmmmm.... Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 20449... okay, last night I'm working on a few little things before getting the 79 on the road. It sat all winter, in an unheated garage, and I didn't have a trickle charger so the battery was almost dead. Put the battery charger on it, let it sit for awhile, and tried to fire it off. The starter sounds like it's just spinning, not turning the engine at all. I put it in gear, rolled it a few feet, and tried again. The starter just spins and spins, so hopefully it's not the flywheel, or whatever it's called. I have... MORE

Here are the steps I would take. 1. Be sure to have a full charge on the battery and make sure all connections to the starter are clean. That would the battery terminals, next the connections in and out of the starter solenoid then the terminal on the starter motor. Also check that the ground strap from the chassis to the engine is there. 2. Try the starter again, if it only spins and does not engage then remove it which is very simple as it is held on by only two bolts. You will have to remove the... MORE

Russ.... Assume this is happening in all gears and is not a function of speed and only engine rpm's. I am an "A" Series kind of guy but have heard from 1500 guys on the list that this engine has a penchant to loose thrust washers off the crank. Evidently they are not "pinned" and as wear takes place, they simply fall out into the sump and the crank starts moving fore and aft. Not being real familiar with this, I would assume one would really feel this in the clutch and/or gearbox. Not saying this is your problem... MORE

Hi Don, I've been under the weather, sorry I haven't posted recently. I run those tires on my car and love them. I wonder if you would though as they are low profile and will lower your speed, your motor will be reving. I changed to a 3.7 rear end to make up for the low tire size. These are real high performance tires and as such they do wear fast too but do they stick. I would look for some 165 / 70 / 13 or even 155 will work fine. I've got a 71 with wire wheels... MORE
