And, Don.... Unless you are towing it "tail first", don't forget to disconnect the driveshaft! :) Cap'n. Bob (Ret'd) '60 Frog PilotRob@... 19338... MORE

Does anyone know what would be required to put the engine and transmission from a 1971 Midget into a 1964 Sprite? Is it just a straight forward swap? Other than being a new engine and tranny, would there be any other benefits, like syncro'd first gear or anything? Thanks. Bruce "priorb1 " 19301... MORE

Went and did it. Just bought a 74 RWA. We all know owning a 74 rwa is more important than clothes, shoes and all that other stuff. So what if I will look like a homeless person driving a sport car. Problem now is getting it home. Had hoped to get it started and running enough to drive the 47 miles home but the reason it had set for a year is because the starter died and I did confirm that it is dead not just a sticking pinion gear. All the smog stuff is still on it or... MORE

According to the id plate on my 1980 datsun 210 the engine is a A14[s].In my chilton book it says this engine is rated at 80hp from 1976to80 but from 79to 82 only65 hp.What did they do to loose this horse power, and how can i get it back?I like the 5 speed gear box but am not convinced an engine swap would be much of a gain. Oops, Sorry Nigel, forgot you were in the land of RHD. It is interesting how they set up the car to run either RHD or LHD. I was just noticing yesterday that mine has all the mountings to move the pedals to the right hand side. Thanks Mark Howard "Mark Howard " 19215... MORE

I hope it lasts as long as you need it to. My 2nd post on the subject was supposed to be off list so as not to upset those who feel the stock T/O bearing is a decently designed product. Not looking for an argument from those who feel differently in this respect than I do. I normally get over 100K (easily) on stock motors or the mildly street tuned motors I run and know the vagaries of this T/O brg. design. It was only at about 120K that I've ever had to replace a 1st gear in an... MORE

Sure you are, Don....and smart, too. The biggest PITA about Sprites, MGA's and B's is that damn carbon throw-out bearing and the strain (by design) it puts on the parts and mechanism. In my earlier days, the motor was always being pulled before it's time to replace the goddamn clutch and even as a kid, I was sensitive to mechanicals. You would never find me abusive to the extent I would rev. the motor and "dump" the clutch just to win a drag race. Never happen. That damn carbon throw-out bearing is a PITA though there are listers who... MORE

I guess you make a better oriental than me, I didn't even know it was 4,700th Chinese year. Actually, it all depends where you're from. I graduated from high school in 1993 (I know, I'm a young punk) and we drove to school with gun racks and rifles in pickups. No one said anything or even make fuss about it. That was then, after Columbine, it all changed. For us Montanans, it was no big deal. We'd go hunting after school, go gopher shooting or what not, and nobody really raised concerns about having guns on school property. But... MORE

Bruce.... 1st is traditionally noisey, but it shouldn't be noisier than reverse. Both gears are, of course, not synchronized. The problem is, there is no way from "here" that we can talk "extent" as in "how" noisey, "there"!! :) You need to give your location so that perhaps a lister who lives close by can give you a hand with this....someone experienced who can listen to it and give you a "yay" or "nay". Good rebuilts are going for around $800 more or less and of course, the engine has got to be pulled to install same. And of... MORE

I am looking to buy a 1965 Sprite that has been restored. The car seems to be in good condition: good paint, new interior, engine runs fine. Theres only on concern that I have and I am wondering if anyone has any insite into this. First gear is very noisy. First gear sounds like a lot of cars when they are in reverse. It is a very loud gear type of noise and I worry that this is a bad sign. The rest of the gears are quiet and the transmission otherwise runs fine, even first gears seems to... MORE

I had all but given up on getting my clutch to work and the last thing I tried, that worked, was I adjusted the clutch all the way down, put it in 1st gear, blocked the front wheels, and started it with the clutch depressed. It rocked and rolled back with the engine still running. Dynamo, I think that I would check (re-do it) to make sure that the dynamo was running the same ground as the car, Postive ground or Negitive ground. There are meters that will show if the dynamo/generator is charging, or it could be your... MORE

Help. Due to a number of circumstances my 1275 1971 Midget has been standing in the garage since the dynamo front bracket snapped on the way back from Silvertsone three years ago. I want to get it out, circumstances have improved, my wife wants it back, my daughter wants to experience it. So, what is the best way to free off the stuck clutch? I've tried putting the rear axle on stands, running it at about 2500 rpm in top gear and applying the brakes with the clutch down, but no joy. Am I going to have to take... MORE

Thanks i thought that may be the case but never had a chance to check any out.Even though i have 76 I much prefer the early chrome bumper cars I have already changed the front end and installed a grill. The rear however is a bit harder to do. i simply made up a couple of filler blocks from 2x4's and fiberglass for each spot under the tail lights, molded to appear like the older rear quarters. But some day i intend to replace the rear pan.Dont have any bumpers but hey i like it that way. After a nice 2 hour ride in the 65 on Sunday, after the installation of the new slave cylinder, I tried for another ride last night. I ran to the shop ( 2 blocks away) and then back to the house. A block from the house, I am almost out of pedal. I limp home, and Martha helps me rebleed the clutch. With a firm pedal, I pull out into the street and start going through gears. I get to third, no pedal, AGAIN!! This time, I have to turn it around, and start the car in first to... MORE

Several years ago I trouble with my ribcase getting stuck in fourth gear. I had rebuilt it prior, if the car was rocked it would come out of gear and things would be fine. Does anyone have an idea as to what the problem maybe? BTW I'm replacing it with a 210 tranny. Thanks. Martyn "Martyn Eastwood" 18975... MORE

Don, Are you trying to shift it with the trans standing on end or in the normal horizontal position? If it's standing on end, you can't do it. The reverse idler moves freely, so gravity will get it in a position where it won't shift. If you HAD it standing on end but now horizontal, it may still be in the wrong place. You may need to move it with your finger. Reverse is seldom a problem, so I doubt anything is wrong. You may also want someone to turn the input shaft while you do it since there... MORE

you ought to get out there more! - you don't need to lift it, only a (not sure what to call it - a sharp movement? a thump?) to overcome the detent spring thing. Thisi s something that I imagine must be a bit harder on left hand drive cars as you are hitting the gear lever away from you 'backhanded' Regards David "David Jacobs" 18942... MORE

Have the ribcase 1275 transmission out of the car and on the work bench. Took off the side panel and inspected the gears. Can't see any damage to the gears at all. It will shift smoothly into first, second, third, and fourth but I can't get it to shift into reverse. Any thoughts as to why? And what would a logical next step be, what to look for before I remove the rear extension? Don "Don May" 18938... MORE

the easiest way is to get the bare shell grit blasted (NOT shot blasted as it'll ruin the panels). If you haven't stripped the running gear and suspension, you're stuck with Nitromors. Hello mg folks: I replaced the brakes and cylinder in right rear of my car, so far so good. I need to remove the hub on the driver side... Axle: What tool works well to remove the hub from the axle tube, now that the axle nut has been removed? I need some sort of puller... Will the bearings need to be pressed into the hub on replacement? Will the locknut (torqued down) be sufficient force to seat the hub upon replacement? Right good friends! Went for the "blast" to check out this new electronic set up. What a difference!! It is very noticably smoother at all revs, but very noticable at low down when just pottering along. It just ticks over with no engine snatch or hesitancy at all. One can even pull away from standstill without touching the accelarator, just gently ease up the clutch and off she goes! And, at the top end those orange and red segments come up on the tach without any discernable misfire at all, and all oh so smooooth! As you can tell... MORE

Just finished installing electronic ignition in the sprite. Used a free dizzy and electrics from a Metro (A+ Engine) which involved a bit of minor engineering to convert the dizzy drive shaft and clamping set up. All back together now and seems to be running sweetly enough, but I need to go for a blast to check it out! First obvious thing was timing it with the strobe. The mark on the crank pulley now shows up as a nice steady, narrow white line. With the old dizzy the line appeared about 1/2" wide and lept all over the... MORE

On my car, if you jack up the back end and have the rear axle hanging on fully taught rebound straps, there is very little clearance with the exhaust where it runs under the rear axle. Without the straps there would be negative clearance..... Guy "Guy Weller" 18796... MORE

if you had both rebound straps disconnected and hit a big enough hole with both wheels at speed, would the propshaft contact the bottom of the transmission tunnel? what would be the likely result if it did? David "David Jacobs" 18779... MORE
