Could have got that engine for 400! Oh well! Well, here it is in a nutshell. I have contacted local clubs(if you call 300+ miles away local) here in Louisiana, to try and find a reputable builder to mechanist who KNOWS this engine..WELL! No luck. So I either ship it to Rivergate, or the guy Brad knows; or try this http://www.brittek.com/majorenginekit.html and do it myself w/ a friend. I have re-ringed a buick 3.8 iter, but this is different! This is where I am at: Today I am stripping the car..completely.I am selling of the entire interior minus the... MORE
Well, Tim- It could be a number of things not necessarily carb related. (ether either, ether either, either ether...I can't do it!!) Peter C. of nosimport states: "90% of carb. problems are electrical". Amen to this!! "My engine is difficult to start when cold" does not contain enough specific information for me to work with to "trouble shoot" with any decent chance of reasonable accuracy at my experience level. Now I just walked in from dinner and I see Gerard has already answered your post so he's already hit the basics on SU's. And he has said it all,... MORE
BTW, don't use heavy oil in the dampers and don't overfill them. I use MMO in mine. (Marvel Mystery Oil). You need to feel the lift of the piston and see if the damping begins in the same spot on both. I use a squeeze bottle with a long narrow tip as a filler. I'll let you guess what's it's original purpose was, but an oil can with a short length of clear tubing will work too...'-) Gerard "gerardchateau" 9085... MORE
Funny, Never saw either of the questions. I have been wondering what is going on because I seen to be recieving occasional emails. I will get replys to questions I have never seen, Or someone will post saying it never made it the first time. I wonder what is going on. To try to answer the "wiring question". Could it be the ground of the advance plate? On my 1500 this ground "wire" is a copper tab that maintains a contact between the movable and the stationary plates. when this tab was not making good contact, the engine would... MORE
Bill, I just went through this, I used an extra gauge light socket and bulb, stu ck the bullet connetor under the distributer wire cover and linned up #1 cy linder to TDC. Rotate the dist. untill the light goes on. This gets the tim ming close. Don't forget to center the fine tunning adjustment thumb screw on the dist. Get some bright paint and make a mark on the pully when you fi nd that elusive notch. I put some paint on the top of the timming cover and the pully, so I didn't have to lay on... MORE
One recipe I've heard of for removing a stuck wire wheel is to loosen the nut (don't remove it!), then drive the car slowly in circles...maybe? "tloutrec" 9031... MORE
NO No NO NO you should not use ether to start your car. once in a while maybe , but not all the time when its cold. Somehow the engines seem to remember that it will start on ether , then it will demand it all the time, even when its hot. A good battery, spark, and the correct amount of fuel / air and correct timing (oh and good but not high compression) should be all you need. Regards Alan "alan.east-jones" 9028... MORE
Bill- This is why the "timing marks" are "on top" on my new Rivergate motor; it was actually a condition of them building it!! You see, having the timing marks "on the bottom" was part if a "revenge" thing, a "commie-pinko" type of plot. This is what the British did to get even with us for "breaking away" in the first place and winning "that" war in the second place. They produce this neat little car and drive us nuts with Lucas electrics and timing marks in the most ludicrous of places. (Could you find a more ridiculous spot... MORE
As noted in earlier email, Chuck ground off the spots on the header that didn't belong there, enlarged the two holes so they would fit, problem, maybe.... The intake manifold fits snuggly up against the side of the head, the header doesn't. I realize that the header may have had a higher flange around the outlet holes, but I don't know if I did something (else) wrong, or that is the way that they should fit. Again Thank You to Chuck, what a wonderful guy, a great garage and yard, very nice son and some interesting sets of wheels... MORE

Paul, Nice righthander. The original sprite wheels were silver painted Ventilated disc and there was also a plain steel wheel. Don't know if that was the standard you got with the early cars or it came later. The crome wheels on your car I do not believe are stock, they look like 14" And chrome was probably too expensive back then...for these cars anyway. The wires are sharp also. Good luck Mike By the way, speqaking of wire wheels, has anybody ever had as bad a time as i'm having trying to get a wire wheel off it's hub?... MORE

Paul, You don't have a picture where I can actually see the wheels, but it appears these are not stock/factory wires. Yes they doo look wider than stock, and it appears you rear wheel arch has been bpwed out to accomodate them. (hard to tell for sure in the pictures) From what I can see, they don't even appear to be real wire wheels, but bolt-ons. The A script means it's probably and APPLIANCE brand wheel. If youcan take a picture of the wheel itself, I can tell you better. Gerard "gerardchateau" 8972... MORE
Paul, Your search for a tonneau cover just got complicated by the pics of the car. That is unless the pics have been reversed. Finding a used right hand drive tonneau cover in the states will be difficult if not impossible! I suspect you will have to Europe/England to find a source for right hand tonneaus. Tonneaus after the bugeyes are right or left handed. A left handed tonneau will not fit properly due to the steering wheel cut out. Best bet will be to get a small tarp and some small bungee cords to use till you can... MORE

Dear Cap'n. Bob, "Thanks" for this - did you have a bad weekend too? ;-) No, after 17 years with the little bu***r, I can't say I'm surprised, but this is the 3rd time its let me down this year (as in I can't fix it in a few hours) - worst year ever as far as reliability goes. It had only stranded me 3 times in the past 17 years! Still I'm suer we've all got tale s to tell, especially those who've been at it longer than I have. BTW, does the "60" after your signoff mean... If they're really short cracks, you might get away with cutting the old metal out and fitting valve seat inserts, but in my machinists experience, if you can see the crack with the naked eye (IE without resorting to Magnaflux or UV dye crack testing) it's probably a lot bigger than you think. Gulp indeed. I guess your first step is to take it to an engineer and have it crack tested- see how far those cracks really go. Good luck, Growler. "Grant Bowyer" 8850... MORE
The saga continued... The car "died" again. Condensor OK, coil OK, ran out of time before disappearing for the weekend, so I gave it to the local MG guru (Graham at York MG). Turns out it was the wiring deep in the distributor, under the advance/retard weights. I don't think I would have found that for a while! So, first great weekend of the year (sunny, cool & crisp - "will the windburn or sunburn get you first?" sort of days) and the car's in the garage - AAAAAARRGH! Next thing you'll be telling us is that it's got some sort of oil leak and you'll expect "sympathy" from us in THIS respect, as well. Disgusting, Charles, disgusting!! Are you "man", or "mouse"?
