You should be able to do it in about half an hour, tea breaks included! Drop by the breakers - lots of a-series engined cars there that have one (easy to recognise - they have spin-on filters! ). Fairly easy to remove too, if I remember its 2 bolts and the oil feed line (Buy that as well, as ther is a difference (albeit small) in the positioning - it saves a bit of fiddle. Don't forget to cut a new gasket when re-mounting it. Good luck Olgierd MKIII midget with spin-on filter "Hubertine & Olgierd" 1504... MORE

Has anyone fitted a spin-on oil filter conversion kit to their engine? Mini Mania do them (part no._SPIN-ON_FILTER), but I haven't seen them in the UK. My girlfriend is reluctant to lie under the car again and line up the long bolt that goes through the old canister/filament filter so I really want to get a conversion done before the next oil change! regards, Mark. Tim, From where is it leaking? If at the top, be sure that you have removed ALL of the old o-ring seal(s). My first oil change I didn't.... can you say Valdez? Also be sure the filter can isn't cocked, I check this by spinning it before things get tightened. If it is leaking at the bolt end, have you got all the bits and seals required? Many late model European cars are returning to the element style of filter. I think it makes very good sense from an environmentalists view-point; much easier to squeeze the old oil out... MORE

Paul, Check if the vacuum-advance unit is working. If not, it can cause a quite bumpy ride... On the other hand, you should be able to get the engine to idle OK with a defective vacuum advance unit (unless it's very leaky?).. Good luck and keep the list informed about your progress! Eeg. Well the system seems to have thrown a wobbly! I posted a message about engine tuning, that did not appear on the list, so I posted another, some time later.......and...........you guessed it they both appeared. I do hope they both say more or less the same thing. :-D........thats technology for you! Lets put it down to system overload, shall we? Paul. paul@... 1495... MORE

Hi Chaps, I find tuning the engine on my Midget MkIII 1972 AKA Arkley SS relatively easy. Being a 1275 fitted with SU HS2 carburettors the setting and tuning is relatively simple, and always gives good results. For a few days now I have been trying to tune my friends MGB GT 1800 engine, with very little success. I have done all the normal things like replacing the plugs, points and condenser, and have set the timing. This engine is fitted with SU HIF Carburettors and they are proving very difficult to balance and tune, no matter how much... MORE

Hi Chaps, I find it rather easy and most satisfying, tuning the 1275 in my Mk III Midget, AKA Arkley SS 1972, The method is quite straight forward and the results are always noticable. This is because the engine is fitted with SU HS2 carbs, they are easily balanced, and tuning them with a colour tune system is very rewarding......... However.......I have tried tuning my friends' MGB GT 1800 engine that is fitted with SU HIF carbs, and no matter what I do I simply can not get the engine to run smoothly, nor achieve smooth accelleration, it is... Hello everyone I was wondering if some one out there knew of the story about these wheels(SEE ATTACHED PITCURE) I have heard that there is a special story. Thanks Jason Gross 1971 Midget 1275cc "Jason Gross" 1483... MORE

You know the things, right? Brass body with 5 pipes and an electrical connection. Fitted to Marinas and Itals, Sherpas, 1500 UK Midgets etc etc etc. So.....which pipe goes where? Unit was cut out of the car by PO. Guess that split is front - rear. Two outlets to the two front brakes? One to the rear? Just rubber O-rings to make the seal? What if one fails. Does it allow fluid to blast out the switch, or is that a bit far fetched? Metro uses two separate bias valves on a dual circuit system to give failure protection... MORE

I have a 74 midget, 1275 engine with twin HS Carbs. Car runs fine, but at idle it surges. The idle will be steady, then drop, then steady. Can't find any air leaks. Any thoughts? I am thinking it may be the fuel pump. DSutteiii@... 1479... MORE

Hi to the group. I used to be on the old list 3-4 years ago but dropped out after a time. I blew the head gasket on my '78 Midget over a year ago and found I had a cracked head. Pulled the engine and kept thinking I would rebuild it. Since I am mechanically challenged, it set for 1.5 years on my garage floor. When I 1st logged onto this group a few days ago, I read where someone had bought a used motor on ebay. A light bulb went off and I looked on ebay to find... MORE

Bob As promised the gospel according to Vizard... The 'Evacusump' system "The system draws air out of the crankcase on the engine so as to reduce the pressure in the crankcase.... ...at idle, intake manifold vacuum is used to draw a vacuum on the crankcase . Depending on the intake manifold used either 1 or 2 PCV valves can be plumbed into the crankcase at the rocker cover. When an intake manifold vacuum exists air will be drawn from the crankcase via the the valve cover and the fumes will simply be burnt in the combustion chamber. When the... MORE

Rob I use the 'Hall effect' Lucas 'Rita' electronic ignition on my cars (A series) with a Lucas DLB198 coil (V12 Jaguar). Never missed a beat in 10 years, no spark scatter and the timing never moves... Expensive (if you can find it) but good kit. James Bilsland "James Bilsland" 1422... MORE

No different to Spridget really. Yes you can use colour tune but use it in one plug hole then move to the other end of the engine and check and then recheck where you start6ed. Hopefully you can iterate down to a good setting. Jeremy Cogman Sprite 2 Hampshire "Jeremy Cogman" 1423... MORE

Paul Sounds like you have an air leak in there somewhere - dismantle the carbs again and check you have all the gaskets in the right places - also that the inlet and exhaust manifolds are fitted properly and that the fixing nuts are tight. Anyone know if clour-tune can be used on MGB GT 1800 engine, I've been told I can't because the twin carbs feed the engine through a manifold that is shared by all four cylinders, can this be true? Puzzled, Paul. paul@... 1412... MORE

Here is a strange one chaps! I have recently removed the carbs, "HS2's", so that I can get a the manifold to fix a minor leak. I have subsequently re-fitted the carbs, and ever since I now get, what appears to be a single explosive backfire on switching off the engine. This suggests to me that fuel is somehow getting into the exhaust manifold, can this be true, and if so how did it happen? I did not alter any settings on the carbs at all, when re-installing them. Could it be that somehow the choke is not closing... MORE

Is the car level? Does it sit higher one side? Was the ground level? Does the engine look level? Brackets are different becauses one has a cut out for the steering but the rubbers are the same. If it's a problem you could always put some packing under one of the rubbers. Mine is lifted one side because of slave cylinder clearance problems on my Toyota 5-speed. Surely someone knows the differences between the ballasted, non-ballasted and the electronic coils? I can identify the b and non-b ones by their internal resistance via a electric meter-thing. How about the ones used on Minis and Metros with the electronic Lucas 59 and 64 ignition systems? I have the A+ engine and MG Metro system with the 64 module distributor. So.....how is one of the coils identified...AND....CAN it run with a ballasted ignition wiring loom? ie if the loom has a ballast wire in the system, will it give too much or too little voltage to the coil... Is there a difference between the left and right engine mounts? The car is a 74 Midget with the 1275 engine. The mounts were recently replaced and the engine is no longer "level" as indicated by a level placed on the valve cover. Any thoughts? DSutteiii@... 1403... MORE

Hi Michael, Most definitely NOT! 17 Amps continuous, means exactly that....the MAXIMUM Continuous current that can be drawn across the fuse is 17 Amps, any more and you run the risk of damaging the component the fuse is protecting, or even worse you run the risk of overheating, and setting fire to the connecting wires. The 35 Amp blow rating means that that fuse will survive a short duration current pulse exceeding 17 Amps, but will blow when, either the current drawn across the fuse reaches, or exceeds 35 Amps for a short time, or exceeds 17 Amps for... James I could do with Paul Iveys phone no please Are the 1275 valves not longer than the small block engined ones? Graham Robson 8robsog@... 1380... MORE

Graham I'll dig it out this weekend. The valves are longer but I guess it depends on the valve springs/fitted length on the engine in question... James "James Bilsland" 1381... MORE

Flat plate like a fuel pump blanking plate but a large bore stub comes off it at 90 degrees. This connects to a large bore rubbery pipe that acts to collect and drain the oil that runs through the turbo bearings. It is a downwards drain that catches the hot oil from the bearings and dumps it straight into the sump. Uses a standard fuel pump gasket. I used one of these vented to the air via a nasty cheap filter. Changed it later for a breather canister from a Rover 2300 which looks identical to the ones used... MORE
