Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe, in my opinion. Places to go in Ireland, and enjoy the drive, include the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula in the SouthWest. Galway and Connamora in the West are beautiful, with plenty of very friendly pubs, a llittle city of Clifton (check spelling) on the West coast has some beautiful driving roads without much traffic. I had a 3 cyl Opel there and enjoyed the driving, I can't imagine how much fun it would be in a real car. The last time I was there I had... MORE

Listers, Just had to find an intake valve for a local racer. Valve was for a 948 with the large valve head (1.156"), but used the later 1275 type collets/keepers. It appears that the 1275 Exhaust valve is useable for this as it has the correct dimensions and keeper. Any reason not to use a 1275 exhaust valve for a 948 intake application? My thinking is that the materials would be OK (I wouldn't do the reverse using intake for exhaust). Opinions? Thanks. Peter C "Peter C." 1374... MORE

hello again spridgeteers, i know this off the subject but i need some advice for you guys across the pond. I just won an all-expenses paid trip to Dublin, Ireland. I live in the states and have been dreaming of the day when i could get over to the promised land where MG's are a common sight. Is it possible to rent an MGF to get around the countryside? also how far is it from Dublin to Abingdon? What is there to do in Ireland anyway? thanks for the help guys. I agree. Alternatively the 1300 BL Marina or 1300 BL Ital uses effectively the same engine as the Spridget. There are a number of issues with these engines - you have to 'rob' the Spridget engine of the front and back plates and use a Spridget flywheel (which needs to be modified to fit the Marina/Ital crank). Also some of the oil plumbing is slightly different... Regards James Bilsland Charing UK "James Bilsland" 1320... MORE

Mike Sounds like your piston rings are shot... 2 breathers should be sufficient assuming that the pipes are of a sufficiently large diameter (say over 3/4"). If you are using smaller pipe then you might require 3 breathers Don't plumb breathers in to the inlet if your CR is significantly higher than standard as the oil mist can be detremental to the octane rating of the fuel and detonation can result. You can plumb into the exhaust if you like (there is an illustration in the Vizard book) but you should be alright just using a catch tank (although... MORE

Hi listers Need a bit of CADCAM ref oil breathers etc. Running hot 1380 with a front timing cover breather and Rocker cover breather. Neither are vacuumed via the inlet. I an effort to control the pint a mile oil loss from the rear main we are also fitting a PETER MAY new modern oil seal to the rear main. So the trick fix is the breather from the old Petrol Pump blank on the block. This will give me three breathers. While none of them are plumed in we are thinking of a catch tank. SO a couple... I have a 68 Austin Healey Sprite and I am trying to find out what type of engine will fit in place of the 1275cc original with the least amount of welding. I want to replace the engine and then use the car while I rebuild the 1275cc. the rebuild will probably take a year or two, and I want a reliable engine in the place of the 1275cc for the time being. Had a similar problem with the mother in law's alegro. It was the alternator brushes. When they wear down they come to rest on a ledge which stops the springs chewing up the comutator. Result brushes just touching but no pressure so they cannot supply the current. I found a good test was to rev up the engine to a fast idle and measure the battry volts whilst gradually turning on more and more electrical equipment. Before new brushes not a lot before the volts fell off, after fitting new brushes lots. Incidentally the same happens with the washing... MORE

David If you drill out the fixing hole in the Rostyle what do you do about remaking the taper? Having drilled out the hole, the taper will not go to the bottom of the hole. This means less bearing surface for the taper. It is the taper that takes all the force. Terry "Terry Isherwood" 1288... MORE

Ok, so it is 4 times the cost of a cheapo Midget waterpump.....but..... This site I looked at advertised a 30psi/ 100litres-per-minute waterpump with electric control that stopped the motor running for the warmup and kept running slowly after shutdown to help reduce problems with boiling of the water after you have done a high speed run. Basically uses almost no power during car acceleration as there is no cast iron spindle to spin up nor is there any water being rapidly forced through the rad at high engine RPM. No fan belt to drop off either. Weighs 2... MORE

Hi Chaps, Has anyone tried Cooltek exhaust wrap on their manifold, I have just wrapped half my manifold with wrap, and exhaust putty, in an attempt to seal a very small crack between two of the pipes, it is only a temporary measure, 'till I can afford a new manifold, but it appears to have worked very well. Until today, that is, when a friend of a friend suggested that I should remove it immediately, as I ran the significant danger of damaging the exhaust valves, due to overheating. Is he correct?, and more to the point, if he... MORE

My advice is to go with the later Spridget discs. I did the conversion using the front suspension parts from a late model Midget. Had the king pins and spindles rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics before I put it all together. The change to the dual master cylinder is not absolutely necessary but highly recommended. Good luck martin farber mjfpjf@... 1256... MORE

Terry You are correct in your assumption that the taper takes the load. As long as there is sufficient area of the nut holding on the taper then I don't see a problem. If you are at all concerned you can get Rostyle nuts with a 'bulge' at the bottom which should give more 'holding' area (Peter May Engineering can supply these). Alternatively you could use larger diameter (7/16" UNF) wheel studs and nuts (you have to re-drill the stud holes in the wheel hubs/driveshafts/drums etc.). Also if you are using wheel spacers on the rear it might be... MORE

Wanted: Sensible, Impartial advice on brake set up for 'warmed up' Frogeye (approx 55-60 BHP). I am rebuilding a Frogeye with a warmed up 948cc engine and want to get the brakes right. Currently the car has standard drums which are probably not up to the job, should I change to larger A40 type drums or go to later Spridget discs? Have you done either of these conversions ? Also with the change to discs is the change to a 3/4" (rather than 7/8") dual master cylinder absolutely necessary? Thanks Trelawny Burt treb@... " "Trelawny Burt" 1251... MORE

Class A Modified Midgets (was Halfords now FADS series) run 10" wide wheels with 9" slick racing tyres front and rear. You have to be careful about checking the wheel bearings regularly and replace them every season (but then you have to do this on a 'roadgoing' spec race car too...) but the bearings seem to put up with the stick as do the stub axles, king pins and wishbones. You can imagine the increase in suspension load over a standard car - these cars lap within a couple of seconds of Formula Ford cars at most circuits... Obviously... MORE
