Here's a little poser which has had me stumped for some time now. I have a most irritating grumbling sound, which appears to be coming from the front of the car. It sounds just like wheel bearings.......and if I drive in a straight line I can hear the grumble, if I turn to the left the rumble goes, if I turn right the grumble is worse!! So I hear you all shout it's wheel bearings on the off side front, but I've had new bearings only 10 months ago and I've just re checked the torque, and all seems... MORE

Hi, I agree with James on this one, I have tried several times and given up in total bloody frustration, I have never yet been able to get the damn thing out, so any lubrication etc has had to be done "in stiu". I must say it is one of the most appaling pieces of engine design I've ever come across!! Paul. paul@... 1104... MORE

You have been informed correctly, however it is perfectly possible to run the 7/8 bore master cylinder on the disc brake set up, you will have to apply the pedal pressure slightly harder but it will work, you can also add a servo to the system, although I do not recommend this on the standard discs as the extra pressure can help induce brake fade due to the small brake discs being unable to dissipate the heat fast enough. Hope this helps Tim www.mgcars.org.uk/frontline/ "Tim Fenna" 1099... MORE

Jason, The starter is mounted by two bolts and nuts. They might be hard to reach, when engine + gearbox are still in the car... I've seen a bracket somewhere (don't remember where it was...) which held the nuts in place to ease the mounting of the starter.....List: please help? Regards, Eeg. eeg.oberije@... 1089... MORE

Isn't that bracket an MGB bit...? 2 bolts & nuts (3/8 UNF) - 9/16AF spanner size and yes they can be really fiddly... also the small nut which fastens the starter cable to the terminal on the starter which can be anything from 10mm metric to 7/16AF. Sometimes you have to hold another spanner on the inner terminal nut to stop the terminal from spinning and tearing out the connection inside the starter. Also the starter motor is a real ba~@#rd to get past the distributor. I usually end up taking the dizzy out and then re-timing the engine... MORE

Tim- When I rebuilt the 1275 engine in my Midget I used Form a gasket on the pan and rear seals mainly to hold them in place and provide a tighter seal. I have not tried Form a gasket on the valve cover & gasket. I will certainly consider it. Ted DSutteiii@... 1102... MORE

First thing to make sure you have the correct gasket, some cheap one are not always to size, Lay the cover on a flat surface and check the edge where the gaskets sits And tap to shape, also replace the seals on the top nuts of the cover as these squash the cover if not correct Trevor Taylor Conversions www.mgcars.org.ok/trevortaylor/ E.mail trevortaylor@... trevortaylor.com "Trevor Taylor" 1090... The gaskets that I have ordered in the past have come from Victoria British. They are cork and I always check the size against the cover. Does Moss have a different type of gasket? DSutteiii@... 1094... MORE

Hello everyone I think this will be easy but before I do so I just wanted to ask the question. Removing the starter is just disconnecting the cables and unbolting it from the mount correct? (And then the opposite to put back on) Is there anything to look out for at the same time such as a hidden bolt or screw? Thanks for the help in advance Jason Gross Brewer Maine 1971 Midget 1275cc GAN 5 UB 94654 G "Jason Gross" 1088... MORE

Hi, Just a few suggestions to think about, Silicone sealers are tough not to get any into the water system.. If there is any it could restrict the water flow. My system has a valve which can be turned off and on depending on weather or not you need to use the heater, I would assume you have checked to see it this is open. As for filling the system. You may also try taking off the radiator cap when the car is cold, start the engine and watch for the thermostat to open and start circulating water.. at... MORE

Marcus, Sounds like you do have an airlock somewhere, I've had to refill my cooling system serveral times and have found that the best way is to fill the radiator until it overflows then seal the system, start the engine rev it for a short while then open the radiator filler, (engine not too hot yet!), and top it up. Do this a couple of times, and then remove the radiator filler cap, compress the top hose then place your hand over the filler hole, and then release the hose, I find this tends to purge out any recalcitrant... Stop an A series leaking oil? Are you on drugs? Seriously, assuming you are using a new cork gasket and it is correctly positioned, if you are still getting leakage from the rocker (valve) cover then it may be because some one has over- enthusiastically tightened down the cover in the past and bent it. This means that when you tighten the cover down the nuts 'bottom out' on the rocker post nuts and you can't get the proper clamping effect on the rocker cover gasket. You could try bending the rocker cover back although its probably better to... MORE

Anybody have any suggestions on what kind of valve cover gasket to use on a 1275 engine that actually keeps the oil where it belongs instead of leaking in several spots? DSutteiii@... 1069... MORE

Midget. Is this OD adaptable to the A-series engine & ribcase gearbox? Is there a specific OD kit made for the Aseries? What are the pros/cons of OD versus a true 5speed? Sorry to ask so many questions, but the more I read and research into the subject the more questions I seem to have. My goal is a Bugeye I can cruise on the Southern California freeways a speed & over long distances. All advice and opinions are welcome. TIA Jim Rogers San Juan Capistrano jarplanner@... 1039... I'm located in Southern Indiana.. around the Louisville, KY area.. there are a few junk yards but I don't think I want old parts.. I have all the old parts. I guess right now its time to take inventory and get the engine up and running again.. I believe it is a 1275cc. It was origionally setup for racing, headers, roll bar, etc. lots of add on parts to add power. When I did have it running it was very powerfull.. derby@... 1034... MORE

I wouldn't have thought it is possible to fit them incorrectly and still get the track rod ends into the tapered holes. The steering arms are bent to the outside of the car (if you see what I mean) and the track rod ends fit into the taper underneath with the fastening nut on top of the arm. If you put the track rod on top of the arm you won't get the wheel on... Use new bolts (2 different lengths) and lock tabs (or loctite) to fit the steering arms and a new locknut or new split pin... Folks: I am having no luck replacing the 'pesky ring' that holds the two pieces of the plungers in the master cylinder together. I checked with a local parts supplier and they have an OEM new replacement, but indicated the same unit fits from 67 to 79 MG Midget (inclusive). These guys have been wrong before (ie stated I needed 1 carb kit for both carbs ... but were surprised when I told them I only have one side draft original carb). Hi everyone, Want to thank everyone again for help in the past. I have come buy Jet needles for a 1275 AUD328 & 404 SU carbs. They were part of a kit I purchased not realizing as I did so that mine are the 1275 AUD266 type SU's. So in order to finance the purchase of the correct metering(Jet) needle, I would like to offer them to a member of the List. They go for $9.95 in the Moss Catalogue but I am willing to take less. They are brand new never used(as they definitely do not fit the... MORE

I thought that before finishing my interior restoration on my bugeye that it would be a good idea to lube the driveshaft u-joints before I put the carpet over the access hole. I am able to see the lube nipple, but with the lube gun that I have there is now way that I can lube it. My grease gun has a straight portion of about 2" at the end of the flexible hose, and the nipple goes off at about a 45 degree angle in the other direction. Is there a special tool that I need to get... MORE

Hi, Having just completed a full carpet and panel refurb, i can offer some first hand advice. For the throttle pedal I found that with a bit of care all you need do is make a single cut in the carpet, so that the leading edge of the pedal sits flush to the cut edge. Then with a lot of knuckle scraping you will be able to push the carpet fully home around the rear of the pedal making for a tight and almost seamless fit. It does look good but you have to get the cut right FIRST... MORE
