I've just posted a dozen sets to Tom Stone (on this list) in St Louis (Missououroieyie). Save the cost of UK-US postage? Might be going on E-bay? I can get about 100 more sets if anyone is interested? Timing marks either in the standard (invisible ) position or with new positioning at the 11 o'clock position so you can see the marks whilst setting the distributor. New rubber damped pulleys, too! PS Tom is CC'd, if you want to contact him. "rob thomas" 720... MORE

Front pulley on the crankshaft? Made a knocky-rattly noise on mine. Bolt is famous for loosening. Makes most noise at 2000rpm or less, then seems to centrifuge into a stable position. "rob thomas" 719... MORE

I used something very similar to line the cockpit of my rally car (bugeye) with similar success. I could actually hear my navigator over the engine and straight-cut gearbox! Mike by "Mike & Kerry Gigante" 710... MORE

Jim, you could always install a straight cut/close ratio box, they will take the torque of the 1380 just fine, but they are noisy and won't help your cruising comfort because 4th is still 1:1 BTW, how hot is the 1380? with say a 266 cam, you could happily run the standard box, much more and the life becomes a problem. Hello everyone Heres the story. I have just recently put in a Pertronix Ignitor with also a Lucas Sports Coil Splite fire plugs and wires along with a new top wire mont distributor cap. It was running ruff but I think it had the tieing off.Today I put a new rotor for the distributor on and then went to start the car. When I did it turned and then that was it. I tested the battery and found it to be low for the 3rd time so I took it back and got a new battery. I hooked it... MORE

Hi Guy, OK thanks for all this advice, it now seems that the concensus is coming down "in favour" of tappets / rockers being the problem. It is now interesting to note that the noise is most noticible at 2000rpm. Nothing at all above and lesser below, and on down to idle. It was suggested by James I believe that this sort of symptom was indicitive of tappets rather than Cam followers. I'll try your techniques over this week-end and see what results I get. I had the revs up to 4000rpm today, wow steady on there! and it... MORE

To narrow the source of the noise down, take the rocker cover off, fire (sorry, start) the engine up and place a LONG screwdriver (or length of copper central heating pipe - or as mentioned before, a sawn down broom handle)on the center of the rocker and the other end at your ear. (I use a screwdriver and place the handle on the bone just in front of my ear - for the pedants on line; No, I don't peel the skin and flesh back first!) You will hear all sorts of noises so listen and learn from each... MORE

Jim Your thinking is about right the rib case box you have should be fine for now but any aggressive use with a good 1380 engine can break them, the five speed option gives a strong reliable set up and gives an overdrive top gear of .82 : 1 this equates to a drop in revs of just under 20% in top compared with the old rib case, as for strength we are now running cars with around 200bhp and not breaking them. As for suspension and brake upgrades if you are going to do a lot of miles... MORE

James, I'm interested to know what you think about revving the engine. Since this situation I've restricted the revs to a max of 3500rpm, would revving the engine cause any further problems or will the problem worsen just because the engine is in use, and subject to normal wear? Regards Paul paul@... 687... MORE

Jim It really depends on the spec of your engine. I do suspect however that you will end up breaking your 1275 gearbox - they aren't designed to put up with the torque of a 1380... I can't advise on which 5 speed to run as I have no experience with that type of conversion however your gearing will depend on what the 5th gear ratio is. Most 5 speed boxes have a 1:1 4th gear and an 'overdrive' 5th. This means that you will probably be overgearing your car (and thereby losing performance) with a 3.7 - suggest... MORE

Dave, Thanks, that's interesting, how would I go about assessing the situation, without a strip down? Are there any tests I can perform? As far as Tyzack Tools is concerned, yes indeed it is my family, if you are interested please do have a look at our family site at www.tyzack.net, you will find massess of info, my Father and I have traced the name back to the early 1200's and beyond!! Tim, Thanks, worth checking but I believe the rattle is a bit further back into the body of the engine, so I assume the timing chain is ok. did you try the sound proofing site? Cheers Paul. paul@... 677... MORE

I have an Arkley SS based on MG Midget MkIII 1972, which is producing a sound similar to badly adjusted tappepts, but I have spent some time adjusting them and I'm pretty sure the tolerances have been set correctly. Could my engine require adjustment to the cam followers, or is there something else causing this rattle. Strangely it seems worse at around 1.5 to 2.5 K revs otherwise the engine is quiet....well quiet for an "A" Series! Anyone had to do this and if so is it easy or is it an engine out problem? The other question is,... MORE

Once again I am looking for the collective wisdom of the List. In other words I can't make up my mind (once again) - What type of trans(gearbox) should I put into my rebuilt 59 Bugeye. Currently I have a Gold Seal ribcase (by Unipart -1983) that has never been installed (or out of its original crate) - everything inside the case is brand new (NOS?), including to packing grease. So the gearbox should work as well as any new ribcase can. BUT because I plan on doing so much freeway driving in So Cal (70mph in slow lane),... MORE

I could be wrong (particularly in respect of US cars) but I don't think that a fuel filter is a standard fitment on an A series Spridget. Best place for an in line filter is between the fuel tank and the fuel pump (which is of course 'conveniently placed' under the car next to the right hand rear shock absorber...) Hi from Canada. Two years ago I purchased a 75 Midget (49,000 miles), someone had swapped out the original alternator along with the MG Midget pulley. It squealed loudly when the belt was correctly tightened, but to hear one self in the car, the belt was so loose that it discharged / and the car over heated.. I could buy a new Lucas alternator ... but none came with the pulley. The solution I came up with was to install an alternator from a 1976 General Motors Truck (60 Amps, typically works flawlessly for a decade, inexpensive at $50.00... MORE

Jason- I had the same question on my 74 Midget with the 1275. It did not have one! The PO removed it. I don't have any idea where it should go, so I spliced on into the fuel line leading into the carbs. Seems to work fine! Ted Sutte DSutteiii@... 649... MORE

Hi Chaps, Afraid I have not been keeping up with the list very much, 'cos i am not allowed to play until I have finished the new kitchen, so if this has been discussed forgive me. Alex, I bought a used Spitfire gas cap off eBay for about $15 or so and it looks and works great. These gas caps are $40 from Vicky Brits new. The cap must have the base/filler, because this replaces the existing filler neck. I used the rubber hose from the old stock air cleaner to make the Spitfire cap base fit the rubber hose from the gas tank. I recommend this conversion to anyone who loses gas caps. Besides, it looks so much better. "rolando" 617... MORE
