Dave, I had the same problem with mine. I drilled a tiny (1/8") hole in the gas cap. Not the most scientific method, but it worked. Later, I got a flip style gas cap off a Spitfire from Ebay, with a bad sealing gasket. Works a lot better, looks great, and I don't lose gas caps any more. Raoul My reference book tells me that you should have the following part numbers on the cylinder head of a 948cc Sprite engine: - 2A 629 2A628 12A 1456 A 12G 206 head would go on a 998cc Cooper or 1098cc Midget (don't know about 12A 206...). I think that a 12G 185 is a Cooper 'S' head (and therefore rare and valuable if not cracked...). I am afraid I cannot find any 2A 829A head... I hope the above is of help - incidentally if you have a 1098 head it flows much better than the 948 head... MORE

Hi Just to let you know. This is how I fitted the unit. I will upload these instructions to the server. I feel a lot safer now. Drivers round here are an unforgiving lot, they are so used to modern cars where the flashers all go at the same rate I got the impression they thought I kept changing my mind. Headlamp relay all sorted. Dead simple. All the bits bought. Just waiting for it to stop raining and get warmer and I will do it. Just want to make absolutly sure I got it right then I will... MORE

Hi all Swipe me, I have just uploaded the alternator conversion document and the sketch of the regulator box conversion to the yahoo file area. I don't know how many accounts I now have but I made it after about 45 min of working my way round Yahoo, reckon they designed Hampton Court maze. I have put both in a folder called, funnily enough, alternator conversion. I have sent individual copies of the sketch to those who asked for it where I was given an e-mail address and where it worked. Anyone like to let me know if they... MORE

Rob I know that Shaun Rainsford (Classic Cars of Kent tel. 020 8301 5239) was looking for a longstroke crank. You might also give Peter May ( 01384 422424) a ring as he might know someone looking for one... James Bilsland Charing UK "James Bilsland" 567... MORE

I've JPEG photo'd some shots of the 'Mk2' relay system I made for the '72. Made the wiring loom up from a 1500 loom to suit the odd-ball chassis/engine combination. Would be willing to make up a complete kit of parts to just "plug-in" to a Midget, using new parts ordered from here in the UK if anyone wants one. Also includes fused relays in waterproof cases and a multi-60amp fuse system to help prevent fire in the event of a crash. Cost me about 50 to make the 'super loom' section from the switches all the way to... MORE

I'm installing new interior panels on my bugeye and had a question. I was considering putting some of that 3/8 inch insulation with the foil backing behind at least some of the interior panels to insulate from the engine heat. I wasn't sure if there was room behind the panels to do this and still have the fit correctly. Has anyone tried this? Thanks Bob rlirwin@... 517... MORE

Hi folks, Firstly, thanks to those who gave advice on the compresion test, I shall now try and determine what cylinder head I have. I have now started striping the sprite ready for some body, engine work and respray.I plan on having it all complete in six weeks, and hopefully some of you will be able to see the results during the year. Does any one have any recomendations for suppliers of the best replacement body pannels. Inner and outer sills, spring hangers, bits of floor and front wing etc. The aspects I am considering are quality of fit,... MORE

I am a new member of this list. I am about to rebuilt an engine. My problem at the star is what kind of head have I. The head that was on the block has a number "MOWAG 12A206". Then I have a head whith number "12G185" and another whith "2A829A". Does anyone know what these numbers stands for?? In what kind ov engine? Raoul Kennedy Sweden raoul.kennedy@... 497... MORE

Hi Ho, These details only apply to a 1972 1275 UK spec model. You may be able to do similar to others but you need to check first. I did not destroy any of the original equipment so I can always revert to as built condition. Later 1275 midgets 1973/4 had alternators as standard. I suggest you read it all first and make sure you understand it. Perhaps even take off your regulator box and identify what you will have to do. Well I did say FULL instructions, didn't I. Sorry! Checks to do first The regulator box is... MORE

Hi Got these sussed out now. The relays I have are the standard ones used today for heated rear windows, fog lamps etc. They cost me about 4 each. I am locating them behind the grill, drivers side, taped on a little bracket retained by bolts already there. Wiring them up is simply a case of making up some short leads with the appropiate connectors on the ends, a mixture of bullet connectors for the original wiring and lucas spade connectors for the relays, then pulling the wiring apart and reconnecting it. All the connectors are available from Halfords.... MORE

k.C. I have a right hand drive and the master cylinder is on the right hand side. The car was built for it to go on either side , you probably have a blanking plate on yours mines on the left. Bob 60 AN5 Tampa MTGBRKR1@... 488... MORE

I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but when using the mason jar filled with fluid apparoacd to brake bleeding, it is also advisable to start with the wheels farthest away from the master cylinder and work your way closer. This usually means right rear first, left rear second, right front third and finally left front fourth on a car where the master cylinder is installed on the left hand side of the car.... just a quick question... if the car is right hand drive, the pedals are aldso on the right.... is the master cylinder then in a... Hi All works OK. Car now charges battery at tickover. I modified a burnt out regulator box to change the wiring over so I did not have to cut the original wiring. The existing plugs simply go onto the modified regulator. One extra wire is needed, the sense wire for the alternator. Luckily my car had a spare tag in the right place, on the battery terminal of the starter solenoid. Full details and a digital picture of the modified box if wanted. Don't open them all at once! Bleed them one time at time starting with the right rear wheel. Get a jar and a small hose, open the bleeder, have a friend puch down on the pedal to the floor. This will force the air and fluid into the jar. When he has floored the pedal, tell your buddy to hold it against the floor while you close the bleeder. Make sure you keep the master cylinder full. Keep bleeding until there are no air bubbles in the hose. Then move to the left rear and do it all over... MORE

No clips, caps on the ends, etc. The other one starts up under the dash in the front, and goes back behind the bracket for the top in the back.
