Me, Jens? Sharp tongue? Nah! Though like Nigel, I may have an acerbic sense of humor. :) I just believe in the experience of others in matters I know little about! Any credit for this one belongs strictly to Margaret. Nothing wrong with a Sprite with old parts 'cause you've got to start somewhere, Jens. As Margaret and others will vouch for, any knowledge comes from a lot of mistakes made along the way. You can only gain experience over time. If I were to do it all again, I'd have done a hell of a lot more reading... MORE

Jens: Yes, there is gravity influence No, the bowls should not be full However, those bowls are kept to a properly set fuel level (in the book!) by the fuel pump of course, when the engine is running, "balanced" from becoming too full by shutoff valves in the bowl covers There is a setting in the manual for the level in the bowl depending upon what type float apparatus you have. This is the correct level for all operations to maintain proper mixture calibration with respect to relative position of the jet and needle as the air valve moves... MORE

You can get some special paint for the insides of engines (I can't remember what it's supposed to do - make the oil drain off cast surfaces?) so that would suggest doing it before assembly! When I last did mine, I did the parts before assembly, as I just think it looks better not coating over the gasket edges in a continuous film. A lot of factory engines were painted after assembly though. David "David Jacobs" 20687... MORE

I have used POR-15 for alot of automotive undercarrages. Be sure to follow thier directons. I have most recently stripped and sealed the entire undercarrage of my 69 VW bus, front axle beam and trailing arms, steering box, anti-sway bars, ect. All this is great for under the car where no U.V. rays will not hit the POR-15 for any length of time. They ahve topcoats you can apply to shield this effect and to add color. If you request a catalog from Rustomotive labratories, there are several products they supply just for engine compartment applications. When it comes... MORE

A wrecking yard gets $100-300 for an engine that runs, a machine shop gets 4-5,000, but they know what the condition is. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 20662... MORE

LOL, Jens.... Believe me I am kidding you and laughing WITH you, not AT you!! :) I do this sorta thing all the time, myself... usually end up cracking myself up laughing at my own errors!! I think Margaret hit the nail on the head as I gather from her post on the subject that the mechanical pump has an anti- drainback valve which, if malfunctioning, will allow fuel bowl level to drop a bit when the engine is switched off and allowed to sit for a period of time. It's like a slow leak in a tire. As... MORE

Petrol should not be 'pushed' through the jet. It is just present in the jet waiting to be pulled out by the partial vacuum in the venturi of the carb. However it does need to be pushed into the float chamber of the carb. jeremy.cogman@... 20650... MORE

Don.... Depends upon the exact mechanical condition, I would think. See www. rivergate5speed.com for a reasonably priced 1275 rebuilt to give you an idea of where to start. I got $1,000 for my 1098 bare longblock. It was the later "cc" big bearing motor and we had taken compression/leakdown figures in order to support the decent price we were asking and got for this used motor. We could also vouch for the oil pressure as well. Non-theless, we recommended to the buyer that while we had the engine "out" and the pan pulled to confirm a "cc" rather than... MORE

Curious what would be a fair current price for a complete 1275 engine in good condition, clean SU carbs with manifold, all assembled and running? Don "Don May" 20651... MORE

LOL, Jens!! This isn't a quiz show, Jens!! :):):) We sorta have to know! Though I am sure you did not intend for it to be, this is the funniest post I've seen since the Bradster's recent mechanical/electrical fuel pump reply regarding Ginger's '65 1098!! And of course, I had to kid him accordingly, Jens. I mean, I just could not have simply let him "off the hook", obviously! It's a lot more fun giving him a hard time for a simple human error! :):) What do you mean "as far as I can tell"? :) Refresh me...what kinda... MORE

Actually...Trevor.... I am hoping your marking of the leads turns out NOT to be ok!!! :):) While it is not unusual for 1 & 4 to support the engine at idle considering siamesed port design and breathing characteristics (especially with hairier cams), I got a bad feeling about that area between 2 & 3. This area on the deck has a tendency to "sink" over time (on a stock, "undecked" block) and the gasket suddenly blow out for no apparent reason at all, usually on a "start" ("cold" engine). This is a good thing to bear in mind for... MORE

A bad spark! For a long while now i have had a starting problem. Running the engine on the starter does not result in any activity not even a little cough, but squirting a little start gas through the airfilters and it just flies off the first attemt and never looks back as if nothing happened. The rest of the day its ok, starts and runs perfect. Next day - same problem again. Luminition ignition system installed, carburettors and pot cleaned out. Fixed a small leak in fuel pump. New coil. Should i get a new battery, the present... MORE

Trevor... Check the firing order...1-3-4-2....make sure the leads didn't get switched. Try a compression/leak down and see what the numbers are. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 20640... MORE

Willy I think he's referring to the 'condition'. After all Concours D'elegance is all about 'condition'. However, as you rightly point out, it's also about 'originality' and whilst it would be quite possible to turn that Frogeye into 'Concours condition', it's unlikely, due to it's unoriginal engine to win any trophies. Just my two-penny's worth. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 20611... MORE

- Brad dont take this as a flame, its not meant that way How can a bugeye with a 1098 be concourse? Im curious? Willy "Willy" 20608... MORE

Ginger It shouldn't make any difference to the fuel pump if the engine was changed to the 1275, they will probably have either left the fuel pump alone, or updated it to the later style electric SU pump - either way the 'wallop' should still work. The only other book that may be useful to you is the Car Handbook - do you have that? Oh dear me and my assumptions again. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 20578... MORE

Holy COW, yall are entertaining. Let's see, Nigel..the engine was replaced with the 1275. I'll assume they left the fuel pump alone though. When I see it Monday, I'll give a good whollop to the pump and see if that gets it going. She's still got to go to the shop because of this nasty pull to the right though. I have the Haynes Restoration Manual. Is there another book that I need? Ginger "Virginia" 20577... MORE

I seem to recall with the 'trick' x-flow heads that one uses 4 Mikunis bolted straigt to the head. I personally have enough trouble balancing 2 carbs which is why I went in the other direction and went to a single one. The fundamental point to remember is that no two cylinders are ever inducting at the same time. "Jeremy Cogman" 20561... MORE

OK... You were lucky this time...just watch it 'cause there's more where that came from!!! Hey, this BE looks to be a real find, assuming the floors are good and there is no rust otherwise around. It's got a 1098 but even if it's the "cg" instead of the "cc", it's been nicely attended to in accordance with the contents of the ad. Wonder if it's got the later ribcase? Probably does considering larger clutch, etc.? Looks like a basically good, solid machine once the hydraulics, front end and driveline are checked out. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 20586... MORE

It is complete, has the history, and with the right person doing the restoration, it is hard to imagine what this car will be worth, once completed. Ah, hah...you are "over there" www.MiniSpares.com The Facet low pressure solid state pump is the one I have used for the past 20 years or so on my Spridgets. Very reliable and dependable but make sure you place a rubber "isolation gasket" or "block" between the pump and body. They are quite noisey to begin with but become a lot more quite after the first 100 miles or so. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 20571... MORE

You think it's mechanical? OK...if so, this would be located on the lower left side of the block, just above the oil sump toward the front of the block. Well, Ginny... The 1098cc engine that came in my BE had an electric pump.
