I've wondered about this myself; one effect will be to move the base of the kingpin forwards or backwards as the suspension goes up and down, however since both left and right hand sides have the same thread, one side will move forwards while the other moves backwards. This will make the car steer (very slightly) to the left on braking, and to the right on acceleration. Could be to counteract the effect of quarter elliptic springs at the rear causing torque (ha ha) steering in the opposite direction? It could provide a greater contact surface area than a... MORE

Hello, Are there any 6-ft or taller midget owners out there? I have been looking for an excuse to own a Midget, as I have appreciated them since boyhood. I'm taking the engine out of my TR6 soon, so this is a good chance. However, I'm 6'1" so I'm not sure I'll fit! I have not been able to find any local cars to test out. Please let me know if you have an idea of whether or not a 6FT person fits in a midget. The TR6 is fine if that helps as a reference. Thanks! Steve "mountainunicycle"... MORE

Jim I can see how that can be more of a problem for you. I have that Lindsay Porter book, and whilst it will help you, it won't help you much in the seat recovering area because it only covers the recovering of the earlier type seats - not the seats for your model (which are the same as mine). And that polythene sheet over the back seat squab is meant to be there. What I am willing to do, is take a series of pictures when I recover my own seats showing the procedure - that may help... There shouldn't be more than a slight rub. Depress and release the brake pedal a few times and see what you've got. You should be able to spin the hub with one finger and no more than slight rub. If it's more than that, there's something wrong. If the brakes were working okay before you changed the pads, you'll probably find rust and crud in the calipers is preventing the pistons from moving freely. They may have been okay before, but when you push the pistons back, you get into areas on the pistons which have been exposed to... MORE

Are you sure you have got the pistons all the way back in? Is the master cylinder full again and the breather on the cap blocked? They can be snug but not that snug. "Jeremy Cogman" 20117... MORE

Hi everyone, I am in the process of fitting new pads and discs to my 1967 AH Sprite MK4, I have moved the caliper pistons back to allow for new pads and discs but it is still very tight and you can barely rotate the hub, I haven't refitted the road wheels yet so I don't know just how tight. Is this common? And if it is do they free up once on the road? Your comments please. Thanks Jon "Purely Classic" 20114... MORE

OK, Jon... Don't forget to put the cap back on the master cylinder after you top it off, finally before taking car out on the road, though. See you tomorrow!! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 20128... MORE

Jon (Purely Classic): The operation goes something like this: Remove wheels and cotter pins and pull old pads...inspect for more or less even wear (we'll assume it's even!:) Inspect rotors for general condition and run-out. (we'll assume no run-out and good condition. Using brake cleaner, spray off pucks and general area. Top off master cylinder with your favorite choice of fluid. Leave cap off. Get in car and slowly push pedal 'til to bring pucks out a little further than they are, but not so far you can't use your favorite tool so you can get "in there" and... MORE

I used cold galvanize by Rustoleum on my headers. It does not burn off and does endure heat rather well. I had a timing chain wear to the point when the engine was revved the headers would glow cherry red! I still have the headers and will gladly post a picture or two if people are interested. I painted them 20 years ago. Martyn "Martyn Eastwood" 20113... MORE

Jukka... I think you are referring to the old Castrol "R" which was used many years ago before the advent of synthetics. However, I will leave this to fellow listers over here who are currently racing their machines and probably know more about this than I. Suffice to say you should do a websearch on "automotive racing oils" to bring your- self current on what is available today.... motor oil technology has come a long way in the last 40-50 years and I think most large companies such as Castrol, Mobile & Valvoline along with the smaller firms such... Don hmm! 1275 - 12CE, 12CD engines were painted a light metallic green, as used on the engines in the MGC and 'big' Healeys. From August 1971, engines produced for the 'round' arch Midgets 12V onwards were painted black. As for engine component colours, you're in the same boat as me, I know of no listing for these and I'm working from old pictures in books to work out what was painted in what. A UK spec one will have the engine painted black. I think emission control spec engines might have had a different colour rocker cover, but that could just be 1500s. The ancillary components are mostly all black too. The unpainted ones include carbs, alternator, cooling fan, distributor (not 100% sure about the water pump) the gearbox on the wiper motor (this could either be natural or painted silver?) Hello folks 1971 MG Midget 1275 History first I have filled up the Midget I put a gas stabilizer in I put in gas treatment in Last time I had the car started it fire on the 2nd turn I drove it out in the drive and it died. I did not start again. I thought battery was low from cranking charged batt. Turn the key the fuel pump comes on but there is no gas getting to my carbs. Took off the fuel filter and held hose and no gas came through. Does anyone have any ideas on... MORE

Bill B,..... Correct needle and spring in HS2 for 1275 = "AN" & "Blue", however.... When carbs. rich and won't "adjust".... I would check the float bowls for flooding. Either too much fuel pressure or valves in bowl lids are not shutting off when in "closed" position. Pull the lids and manually "close" the valves. Blow (with mouth) through. If air is going through with valve "closed", so it fuel. Renew with upgraded "viton" tipped ones of "grose jet" type available from one of the usual suspects. If this is not the problem, suspect an aftermarket electric pump of... MORE

About ten years when I first heard of Water Wetter in a Moss flyer, I bought a bottle. Scientist at heart, I designed a test to measure what it actually does. Surface mount thermometers on the top and bottom radiator tanks, thermocouples in the air stream in front of and behind the radiator, and a calibrated water temp guage in the car. The results were zero. No effect at all from Water Wetter. None. That's not to say that some people don't see results. First they drain, flush and refill their systems, and add Water Wetter. The car runs... MORE

Jason, 12 capsful, more or less, will get the job done. The ratio is not that critical, Jason. Hello Folks I know this is a little early but I'm just getting my duck in line. I will be adding water wetter to my coolant this spring. I have read the direction on the bottle but I can't figure out how much needs to be added to the system. Does anyone know how much you add to a 1275 system? Don Well really it's a question of perception isn't it. I compared the production figures for the MkIII, because only MarkIII's had the 1275 engine. If you want a 1275 engined spridget, you have a choice of square arch or round arch, and there was slightly more square arch 1275's built than round arch ones. If you want to compare Mark III, 1275 facelifted versions then there were about 40% more round arch versions than square arch versions. I think its reasonable to make a 'like-for-like' comparison. Is there really any point in comparing say a 1098 square arch... MORE

Hello Folks I am going to be replacing my thermostat this week end. I have all the stuff to do it. I have the gasket for the housing but do I need any kind of silicone or something like that to make sure the paper gasket holds?
