Dave.... The dry figures are bad enough but the difference between wet and dry tells the story.......excessive blowby due to worn rings and/or worn bores. Cap'n. Bob (Ret'd) '60 Frog PilotRob@... 18792... MORE

Actually the sway bar fitted to ruber bumper cars is a good "upgrade" for the later chrome bumper models. Bit heavier and stiffer than the original spec for the lighter cars. I forget the sizes but believe they go up in 1/8 inch steps so maybe the 1500 is 3/4" and the 1275 is a 5/8" ? Guy "Guy Weller" 18772... MORE

No, no... Long is good in this case because it provides all the info required. I get the picture. The strap is to prevent the axle from getting too far from the body in case you do hit a "hole" in the road at an imprudently high speed and bearing this and the other info in your post in mind, I can see exactly how removing these accounted for better traction on the inside rear tire...makes perfect sense, now. I got my start in autocrossing the same way at the age of 17 Fun days, for sure. That would've... MORE

Off I went to Harbor Freight for the first time and returned to 22 posts. In my bag is a 40 piece tap and die set, on sale for $8.95 Should be fine for cleaning up existing threads. A 9 pc hollow punch set $5.99 for those gaskets I make now and then. Had a hard time locating the last item I had on my list, a " 2 PC Nut Splitter. Finally had to ask a sales clerk. Noticed a slight upturned twitch at the corner of her mouth when I asked her where the nut splitters were.... MORE

The gasket needs flame rings, rings of a higher melting point substance where the gasket is exposed to the combustion process. "Jeremy Cogman" 18798... MORE

That one is a beast to get out. I used one of the pliers that was in an inexpensive set I purchased at Kragen Auto, but I had to file the inside of the square area above the round ends so the pliers would close enough to squeeze the circlip together enough for removal. I also rounded all outside corner areas of the pliers to protect the inside of the cylinder. They were cheap, made of soft metal, however that made them easy to file and bend into shape for the task. I realize this is not the best... MORE

David, What a tale of woe!! Sounds to me like you are pressurising both the oil and the coolant. How carefully did you check the bores when it was stripped down? Could you have a hairline crack in one of the cylinder bores that is opening up as it gets hot? May show up on doing compression test on a cool engine, and then again after it has reached full operating temp. Guy "Guy Weller" 18739... MORE

Rebound Strap... and rubber stops?? With the correct shocks (slightly stiff tube type on a mazda LSD), stock 1/4 elipt springs and pan-hard rod... we don't need no stinking rebound straps or rubber stops!! At least that's what my hopes are... when it hits the road of course, -Drew located "Drew Griffith " 18720... MORE

The following assumes a standard anti-roll bar from a later Spridget, not the Donald Healey Motor Co item, though they are broadly similar. Depending on how your front suspension has been rebuilt (what? it never has been??) the wishbones will probably have some mounting holes drilled in their front face; a triangular plate is bolted to the wishbone and the drop link is fastened to the 'spare' hole in this plate. If memory serves correctly, these links are handed, so you need to get them the right way round but it's pretty obvious. The other end of the drop... MORE

And when you do so, keep the old O ring as it will do nicely as a replacement for the rubber ring used when fitting a speedo or rev counter to the dash Guy (another "we tighter") "Guy Weller" 18710... MORE

If it leaked only after you removed the brake drum, leave it alone, it will stop when you tighten the lug nuts again. If you've removed the axle for a peek, then you should replace the o-ring and paper gasket, and while you're at it, the hub seal too. and since you have to remove the bearing to replace the hub seal, may as well fit a new bearing too. They're cheap. Same old story - start out to change a light bulb and end up doing a three year ground-up restoration. "Jeffrey Holmes " 18709... MORE

Willy1....hi, there. Sway bar off a racing BE? Hmm..street and track needs can be very different. What size front sway bar? I ask for good reason because a "heavy" bar is definitely going to completely change the "feel" and handling characteristics of your machine.....what are you looking for in terms of feel and handling for your set-up, Willy1? A mild bar (9/16 or 5/8) will reduce the BE's natural tendency towards oversteer (or backend "twitch" over rougher surfaces) which helps get the car around corners at reasonable speeds very nicely. This "tossibility" is what makes the car fun to... MORE

The weeping is probably from the paper seal, and if you replace the O ring also located at the axle seal, it will probably quit. However, just when do you think the last time the bearing seal was replaced and when will you have it tore down this far again. The large nuts that have the tabs that hold the hub on, one is left hand thread and the other is right hand thread. Bob, Portland, OR "Robert Webb " 18705... MORE

"And when you do so, keep the old "O" ring....." Well, how about that! Learn something new every day, for sure! Thank you, Guy Weller. :) Cap'n. Bob (Ret'd) '60 Frog PilotRob@... 18714... MORE

Hi everyone: Thanks for the encouraging remarks from everyone ...I'm enthused to continue my project. Special thanks for the Midget vs Miata comparo...I was considering a Miata but prefer older cars. Now to business: I have removed the rear brake drums from my car and will be replacing the cylinders, turning the drums, etc. I noticed that, with the lug nuts removed and the axle halfshaft held in by only one Phillips screw, that there is leakage of differential lube from the joint. Even if I tighten this screw, there is weepage. I think that I have to at... MORE

that's not quite what I meant - I calculated the weight of shell plus bits and bobs WITHOUT engine, gearbox and back axle was around 1000 lbs, so if a totally bare shell is around 300 lbs, then what constitutes the missing 700 lbs? Regards David "David Jacobs" 18671... MORE

David Jacobs.... "Double the weight"? Yep!! Try picking up an engine/gearbox combo or rear axle assemby with the springs attached, but not before checking your medical insurance policy! :) Cap'n. Bob (Ret'd) '60 Frog PilotRob@... 18660... MORE

Hi Reggie: you wrote No Spark at Plugs, but Glowing at Solenoid! You may have had other answers already but here's my 2c: The glowing battery wire is unrelated to the ignition problem*. Sounds more like you might have either a bad ground (ie no ground starp to the engine) or either the starter or starter solenoid is shorting to ground, or you could have really corroded connections (unlikely). I would disconnect the battery, test for shorts using a volt-ohm meter. Test the solenoind first. There should be no continuity between the solenoid and the car chassis. Then, do... MORE

the dry weight of a MkI Midget less engine gearbox and rear axle is just over 1000 lbs, so if you use this figure in whatever calculations you are doing, you should be safe. What *do* you need to know for? Regards David "David Jacobs" 18630... MORE

HELP! hello again so soon! :) Needed help if possible. I have replaced the distribor cap, rotor, points, condenser, plugs and wires, but now no spark at plugs! However the engine turns over, so starter is getting juice, the battery was just charged. but the cable from the positive side of the battery is glowing hot and smoking where it attaches to solenoid. Why would it do this? Could it have been a bad job by me replacing those items listed? Was running before, actually this past October, before acquired oil filter adapter problems, but now no spark with... MORE

Hi there everyone, I know you all are saying, who the heck is that? Well I'm Reggie in California, and have been a member for several years now, but haven't posted/contributed for about a year. Sorry :( Anywho, intrductions aside, found a little relief from the lack of info on the dual line master cylinders and those damn piston linkages! Was rebuilding one myself these last few days, and stumbled upon the perplexing problem of the pistons no longer being connected to each other. Read the posts on here and found no one else could find reference to them... MORE

that sounds like the started is drawing too much amperage..either from tight bearings or a high potential shourt to ground....I would have it checked at a shop that does that sort of thing..... Have you measured for 12V at the coil connection when the key is turn on? I would say recheck your point installation connections and point setting. Test for spark from the coil without turning over the engine. Not having spark may not be related to the heat at the starter solenoid connection. However, if it is not a dirty connection causing the heat at the solenoid connection then as David pointed out a bad bearing or short in the starter motor could be a likely cause. Don "Don May" 18636... MORE

If the heat occurs only when the solenoid is activated by the starter switch right off hand it sounds like a bad connection at the solenoid connecting post or the points in the solenoid are not making good contact. That would result in resistance and that large amount of current will result in a large amounts of heat. First disconnect the large red wire and clean the crimp lug on its end and the solenoid connecting post toughly make sure there is no oxidation on either one of them. Check the wire crimp, squeeze it tighter if the wire... MORE
