Not that my absence was noted.. however, I 'be' back.. needed time with zero outside world connection.. close as I could come was lake house in OK. No offense intended to the state of or people within Oklahoma.. Now...where is my metric hammer? Leaning more in the direction of stuffing a 5.0L ford into the 71. May happen, may not. 1275 eng for the 'works in progress' 71 is fine, tranny is another situation. Notice a whole group of past posts.. as long as no one has posted the end of the world time/date or winning lotto numbers.. I... MORE

It's not always where you expect. Having an erratic running problem I had checked points, timing, the carbs, all without success. Got the engine running fairly well but still not great. The engine seemed to be erratically cutting out, very briefly, not enough to die just enough to act like the timing, points adjustment, or the carb adjustments might be off. Turned the engine off, went inside, came back out to go on a road test, and the engine would not start. Because I had just adjusted the points I checked to see if perhaps I had not tightened... Can anyone(Frank?)tell me what is required of older cars as far as MV inspections in Nj? How old does a car have to be and do you need QQ plates? Any way to eliminate smog control gear and not have to pass emissions tests? For instance, can I "tune up" a later 1275 engine and drop it into a 66 Spridget and get away with it? "coachbad" 13586... If you have the thermostat out, you need a blanking sleeve in it's place to prevent turbulence. This could be part of your problem. What procedure did you use to flush the radiator. Running water through it is probably not enough (even at pressure). The oily deposits/blockages will not be removed without some chemical or detergent help. Is your timing correct? What did you set it to? Without the pollution stuff it should probably be set using UK timing specs. Gerard "gerardchateau" 13585... MORE

Running hot/overheating after 10-15 minutes. All pollution garbage removed, cap replaced, thermostat taken out, rad flushed, warped head was milled and head gasket replaced, intake/exhaust gasket replaced, electric fan installed (set to run all the time). Been told that if water pump not leaking it is OK (took plug out and had a geyser so apparently pumping water). Last time it overheated the top hose was extremely hot, the lower hose I kept my hand on (warm not hot). Believe we have hoses hooked up properly but cab't be positive without diagram. Any ideas? Very frustrating after all the... MORE

"Studs for one rocker", do you mean one rocker pillar in which case one of those studs is actually a head stud (assuming a-series). What engine, where are you? "Jeremy Cogman" 13575... MORE

Brett, A couple of things from my experiences with my 76. First you say there is very little fluid movement when the pedal is pushed. Did you rebuild the master? and could you have put a seal in backwards? The little fluid flow indication is what I experienced when I put a seal in backwards on my brake master. With the seal in backwards, it did push any fluid, but it sure sucked. To bleed my clutch, I remove the slave from the bell housing, insert an old rod into the slave, open the bleed screw and push the... MORE

I have some, but these came off of a 1500 engine. They are about 3 1/16 inches long. Yours if you want them. -Brett "Brett LaCroix" 13573... MORE

My slave looks like it has the longer style piston. The frustrating thing is not being able to isolate the problem to either Air, Slave function, OR Master cylinder function. I figure it is cheaper (and easier) to rebuild the cyliders and bleed like crazy... to make sure that it is not a hydraulic problem... before I pull the engine again to look for a mechanical problem. Thanks, Brett "Brett LaCroix" 13568... MORE

I have rebuilt and replaced a few slave cylinders on bugeyes. I have noticed a difference in the length of the piston within the slave cylinder. The short pistons work fine while the longer ones do not. As far as bleeding the slave, all I do is drive the car up ramps, fill the M/C, cap off, open bleeder on slave slightly until I can see a drip of fluid, let it drip for about 30 min, keeping M/C full, close bleeder, put cap on M/C and it WORKS. jerriemarc@... 13564... Bob is right on this one Gary, as ever. It's not a case of eliminating lost movement in this system such as getting some found movement. Replace all the clevis pins, one on the handbrake lever, one at the other end of the cable and one at each end of each handbrake rod, 6 in total. Check your cable to see if there is any adjustment left in it and replace if not. The holes in the rods will also be slightly oval but this is an expensive to replace part so don't unless the holes are very elongated.... MORE

Thanks David, but that would fall under the subject of "After I pull my engine..." BTW... I did not replace any of the internal clutch parts in the tranny... but they all seemed in very good condition (before I put the trans on the engine)and the throw out bearing lever moved forward and back without any problems. -Brett "Brett LaCroix" 13553... I HAD AN 850 MINI HEAD ON MY 1098, TOO MUCH COMPRESSION! Oil was going everywhere except where it was supposed to stay. If you are looking for a 1098 head try www.brgparts.com. I know that theyhad them as late as a week ago. Best of Luck Bob 60 AN5 Tampa, FL MTGBRKR1@... 13518... MORE

Hi, Bruce- Now that your unitended run-in with Gerard and Tony is over :):)....the air/fuel mixture is mostly air to begin with, at a ratio of about 13.0 to 14.0 to 1. So, here is always plenty of air getting into the cylinders at all times with very little fuel as you can see. I have been giving this some thought regarding your sudden "stoppage" because I had this happen to me years ago. The engine timing chain "jumped" when a fastener in the front engine plate by the cam sprocket came loose and got caught between the chain... MORE

This should be simple to diagnose... if the pushrod in the slave cylinder is not moving, then you have not succeeded in getting the air out (for whatever reason). If the pushrod moves, but the clutch does not disengage, then the problem is with the clutch (probably disc). Some people mistakely put them in backwards. Are you POSITIVE you assembled the master and clutch cylinders correctly (seals right way around?) Gerard "gerardchateau" 13431... MORE

I'm running an SU HIF44 which is basically the metric version of the 1.75 (1.75" = 44mm) with an integral float chamber. It's on a titan manifold which comes ported for a 1.5 but has enough meat to grind out to 1.75. The carb came off a Metro and is running it's original spring, not sure what colour this is, it has a bit of a yellow tint but that could just be years of muck, standard Metro spring is actually a red! Needle is a BCV with a slight flat filed for all but the last half inch,... MORE

Well Brett, I once put the clutch lever in backwards when assembling the trans. I hope this is not why you are having this trouble. As you pressed the clutch there was no action seen through the hole. The release bearing would slip backwards in the grooves in the lever putting no pressure on the clutch. Pulled the engine and had it back in three hours after realizing what we did wrong. good luck. "Ian & Cathy" 13432... MORE

I am about at the end of my rope with my clutch problem. I just put in a rebuilt master cylinder... inspected my recently rebuilt slave cylider... bled... bled... and rebled my line... The clutch still will not release. Is there something that can be jamming the release bearing so it is not sliding forward? Is there anything you can do, when the slave cylider is off? How much force should be needed to disengauge the clutch? Is there a way to test it from below the car? This is a MAJOR disappointment. Everything else about my car is... MORE

Thanks, Jeremy. There IS a yellow spring (so that's valid) and you are running a modified BCV on a modified Titan. I'll "save" this message for reference when I get going on this upon hearing from APT. I assume you previously ran the motor with the twin 1.25 set-up, Jeremy, then converted over to the single 1.75? If so, what sort of difference in torque and response did you note? My new 1293 is a Cooper "S" tune, having the cam, allum. head, distributor, etc., do I am interested in your observations. Cap'n. Stanley- I can't speak for the Morriservice kit but the early Rivergate kits did involve some cutting and fettling, however..... These kits get better over time. Rivergate has made improvements galore over time (as they ennumerate on their website) and I am sure Paul has done the same with the Morriservice kit, as well. All are aimed at making the transition just as easy and painless as possible. There is very little these days that has to be done to install these kits. They are pretty much bulletproof, though there will always be a little "fettling" to be done... MORE

Yo, Jeremy!! I am about to go over to a single carb. set-up on my new 1293 engine. Whether it will be a 1.5 or 1.75 remains to be seen...as soon as I hear from Dave or Jack at APT, I'll know more. Meanwhile, if you get the chance and it is no imposition, would like to know the single carb you are running on your's and the needle profile and color spring you are using. TIA! Cap'n. Well, WST- Not exactly out of hand and certainly a discussion more than an argument. But, you are right.......this IS a car list, after all. Still, it is interesting to see the different "takes" on this particular post! OK...enough!! :) I went over to plain distilled water, B&G cooling system conditioner and Water Wetter from a previous mix of "50/50" distilled water/glycol antifreeze. In 90 degree+ heat with humidity to match, engine is slower to get "overly warm", faster to cool and basically runs 10F cooler than the old "50/50" mix under the same conditions.
