Jason & rlirwn@aol. Looking at your (USA) prices for doing up an engine $4000 ? Astounding. That's what I'd expect to pay for a car, in running / good condition . A rebuilt midget engine is about =A3700 =3D $1021 over here, in stock form. And =A31281 =3D$1868 for a 1293 cc tuned to stage 2 (fast road use) by rep utable builders. Shipping costs to USA ?? surely not $2100. Rebuilding an engine myself , but having a rebore and regrind plus new par ts should only cost about =A3350 (yes I know its my time ,but I'm... MORE

Hello Folks I am going to take a have my engine re built maybe next winter. There's not really anything wrong with the engine but it does have allot of miles on her and I figure it would be good to do before something major goes wrong. What my question is how much do you folks think it would cost parts and labor for a 1275 to be re done? (Going rate in my town 52.00 an hour) I am planing on putting on a exhaust header and maybe a new weber carb. Thanks for the info,it's good to... MORE

On early rings the 'plip' is actually a rivet, it keeps the locating tab in place. Later rings don't have a rivet they have a 'plip' which is a fake rivet! "Jeremy Cogman" 11392... MORE

I purchased headlamp trim rings for my '79 Midget 1500. I found a nice set of rings from an older car, the ones with the screw hole at the bottom. I was told by a number of people that these would fit the later car. I am having a pretty hard time trying to snap these in place. The buckets were pretty warped but I straightened them out pretty well. Any suggestions or are these the wrong one's for this car? Thanks Mike K. '63 Sprite '79 Midget 1500 kna331@... 11389... MORE

I'm not sure what could have happened, but of the 3 cranks I recently had reground/polished, two are missing dowel locating pins for the flywheel (1275). I know I didn't remove them and they're not in any of the flywheels I have. The machine shop said they didn't remove them either, but they're missing in any event. If anyone has one or two handy you don't think you'll need, please let me know. Maybe I can get by with one in each. I kinda hate to place a parts order for just those. Gerard Gerard 11390... MORE

Hi Chris, No you have this right. I have stripped it down, removed the odometer unit complete with "pie pan" (thought it was aluminium, but logically it is steel). Then removed the little nylon ratchet lever, pinion and shaft. I am left with the spinning magnet which rotates in a bearing in a fancy little cruxiform aluminium casting. This is the bit with 10 mm "fore and aft" movement. Pushed down, it rotates freely without binding. Pushed upwards (towards face of speedo) it binds. When all is assembled, I think that when the flexible speedo drive cable is fully... MORE

Bill, Where you have gone wrong is that, as you have connected the ammeter, it can read only the alternator output (positive amps) but not the battery output (when the engine is off - negative amps). If you insist in having an ammeter (see * below), it has to be between the battery, and the alternator output, AND all of the electrical loads with the obvious exception of the starter load (i.e. only but all of the THIN wires) - you'll have to look at your wiring diagram to make sure you have all of the "thin wires" identified... Yep, good earth, good leads, got a spark ??? One guy reckons its an inlet manifold air leak or blocked fuel feed inside the 45 ? Hi guys, A little help if you would? I have a misfire........in fact it only runs on two cylinders! Runs like a clock then 5000 rpm it falls over ! Loss of power and cylinders 1 & 4 pack up (front & rear) middle two keep going....so some tests Can only be a) Electric's, b) Fuel, c) Mechanical :-) All four have spark, 1 & 4 weak, but there. NEW cap, R-Arm, leads and plugs fitted. Same result Substituted leads & plugs from 2&3 to 1&4, same. So leads & Plugs OK........ Used one of those 'plug views' and... MORE

Hi Brad, The PO changed Poppy to RHD, did some minor repair work, and had the garage across the road from him do the paint job. The only body bits to have been replaced were the driver's floor pan (was passengers in the US, so got wet from time to time) and the cross member under the seats. The rest of the body is original. So is the engine, although I had the bottom shells replaced some years ago. She also runs on unleaded fuel with no problems. Tomorrow, Sunday, if the weather holds out, (she is Totally topless!!)... I put a used grill in my 76 midget. looks good but to do it right you have to cut out the end sub frame rails at the grill opening and in doing so you loose the mounting studs that attatch the rubber bumper'You could modify the grill and mount some driving lights to the old bumper studs as a way of hiding them.At the rear it is harder to delete rubber bumper and still look good because the quarter panels are cut flat below taillights. I made up 2 wooden fillers that i fiberglassed and painted. They mount with... MORE

Hi Jeremy Lots of people seem to fill the AH in in red (my old caps were like this) But originally they had no paint. Not all the cars in Terry's book are concours, although most are very nice, take a look at the mineral blue MK IV on page 86, the passenger side has a front wing from a later thin bumper car. Look at the distance from the bottom of the headlight to the top of the side light both sides. I have just corrected the same fault on my Sprite. Regards Dave (66 Sprite in Cambridgeshire... MORE

I've just acquired some lovely NOS AH stamped hubcaps for my mk2 Sprite. The ratty ones on there at the moment are, I belive the originals and the AH stampings are filled in with body colour (ish) paint. The new ones are unsurprising not, so you can fill them in with the colour of your car...I thought. I had a quick look in Horler to check that they should be painted and as far as I can tell every picture that shows them, shows them unpainted. Is this as original, or because all the cars show are 'concours' and... MORE

Now that you mention that the engine is 'old', here's what I did with similar symptoms. Firstly I checked ALL the wiring, twice! - didn't help Then I re-adjusted the timing statically (statickly? staticly? - with the engine not running)- didn't help either. Then I adjusted the timing with a stroboscope - I noticed that I couldn't adjust accurately, It seemed as if the ignition 'floated' from too retarded to too advanced. of course this didn't help either, but I narrowed the problem down to 'engine trouble' I solved the problem temporarily by adjusting the timing 'on the fly'... Bree Racoon's can be a tough problem to deal with. Highly intelligent critter. Hey! There are a thousand right ways to skin a cat but, 3.5K for 10 minutes on a "new" motor? What is going on with "sustained" rpm of any value during first 500 miles of initial operation? You know something I don't know (quite possible, I might add!!)? I thought "varying" rpm not to exceed approx. 3.5K for first 500 miles was the way to go for proper ring "breakin" and longevity of entire motor (street application vs track, where they are most definitely broken in differently considering different clearances, etc,). Not being argumentative! You do it "your way...it's... MORE

Really, Bob K.? Now this is really surprising, especially for vehicles that go with "gray" or "orange" set-ups and lightened flywheels for upgraded motors. Haven't used the original T/O bearing for 20+ years since I went to "tuned" applications and got tired of pulling motors to replace carbon types which just couldn't stand up over time, while replacing perfectly serviceable discs and pressure plates. (I mean you've pulled the engine so why not renew everything....cheap insurance!) Of course, my driving style was a little different back then....though I was never into breaking tires loose in terms of acceleration despite... MORE

Hi I just found this Group Today.... First let me start off by saying I love MG's, (Midgets especailly) The First car I drove was my Dad's '72 1275cc. I had to get it back into Driving shape when I turned 16, but it was well worth it.. After putting some work into it, I decided to buy one of my own, since my Dad's would always be my Dad's no matter what I did to it. I ended up buying a BRG 79 1500cc, Loved that one too, but it had been a beach car and I never... MORE
