Jason, Hylomar is a non hardening gasket adhesive/sealant. Moss Motors sells it but so does just about any Auto Parts house. Also most automotive fluids, gasoline, oil ect. won't break it down. Hope that helps. Mike kna331@... 10102... MORE

Hylomar is a blue sticky substance that was originally developed for Rolls Royce. ( I think it was for aero engines , Merlin etc as used in the real spitfires ) Used as an all purpose gasket sealant. Now made by Hammerite products , Prudhoe, Northumberland NE42 6LP (England) 'Phone 01661 830000 Appears to be the same recipe that I used to use 20 years ago. Was very good then, should be now. Jason, Yes. That is an inspection cover. If you can remove all the nuts and slip the cover off, this will be a fairly easy job. sometimes these are put on without any sealant and thgasket is very thin. Drain the oil first, clean both surfaces well and reinstall with a new gasket and I would use Hylomar to ease removal of it in the future. There are two spring that operate on two plungers for you lockouts. Don't forget to reinstall them before you bolt things down again. They won't fall out, but you'll probably want to remove... MORE

Something tells me Cap'n Bob grew up on a steady diet of American V8 Lard-mobiles. ;-) Mike- most 175's will fit (but only just) but they'll ruin the delicate poise and handling of your '63. Total grip during cornering will be better, but you'll lose the ability to balance the car on the throttle- your wee 1098 engine just hasnt enough power to make full use of 175's. It's an old argument. Your average American equates 'handling' with 'grip', IE the car which generates the most cornering G's has the best handling and is safest. Which is, of course,... MORE

Tim and Mike: Pirelli P4s were very common here as standard for FIAT cars here during ea rly 90=B4s, and it is true they were sticky, pretty soft, good grip, and th at they don=B4t last forever.......LOL !!!!! Just take care they are not very old, and also the way they are "storaged" cos if wrong way many years, they get deformed.... 1955 Jorge Dimitrakis 1973 Midget RWA 1275 1810 Argentina Mike, That sounds like a great deal, I've heard that Pirelli's are "sticky" , they're pretty soft so they stick to the road good. Hello Folks I was under my 1971 MG Midget 1275 the other night. I have had an oil leak for awhile so I thought it I laid under it long enough I would find were she is leaking. Ok, guys!! "Down", guys, "down". :) I take it all back, ok?! I keep thinking 1275 engines and wider stock wheels than what this lister probably has on his 1098 equipped Spridget. You are correct! Go with the normal 78 or 80 aspect ratios for the smaller bores and "leaner" wheels. Growler is absolutely right. "Tossability" will go to hell with 175/70's on the "leaner" wheels and will un-necessarily "drag" the smaller engine as well. Correctomundo. The car will lose it's "fun" handling quotient. I apologize for my erroneous initial recommendation (I should have had more coffee before attempting... MORE

Hmmm!! Well, I am surprised. Live and learn. "Pullers" (or "suckers") are definitely more efficient due to their "non-blocking" effect (they better "go with" the natural flow to begin with) and still, I am surprised that an obviously correctly mounted "pusher" couldn't do better. Of course, the electric fans are for speeds of less than 30-35 mph, for at higher speeds the airflow combined with normal water pump rpm's (flow rate) will keep the healthy engine with healthy circulation system cool enough. except possibly those equipped with a "pusher" which "blocks" normal airflow to some extent. Well, what "is",... MORE

have i been lucky or what? I keep hearing bad things about the 1500 engine , runs hot/weak bottom end etc,Mine seems to run strong, dosnt over heat has good oil preasure.Should i be affraid???I do have one question. It has a slight rough idle, so i went to the book on carb adjustments. Tried to adjust as stated but screw goes around and around with no apparent stopping point. Now it cant decide weather to idle at 1500rpm or something less than 500rpm. quite annoying at stoplights,as it may cut off or want to take off!!! never the same... MORE

I've always felt that it was the slight natural run out in the disc (due to the slight lateral movement afforded by the bearings if nothing else) that caused the pads to release. As you say Bob, I suspect they are very very slightly dragging most of the time. Jeremy "Jeremy Cogman" 10013... MORE

What make is it in that case so we can avoid them! I run a Kenlowe as a sucker (i.e. behind the rad), with a v-flow rad and a tuned 1275 and even in traffic on very hot days (yes we do have them sometimes in England) it's always fine (touch wood). I run an oil cooler too which I'm sure helps. "Jeremy Cogman" 10010... MORE

Lost the begining of this but my car used to smell badly of petrol overnight. I eventually cured it by fitting new carb float valves, adjusting the float levels and renewing the jets and the top gaskets. The flexible tube from float chamber to jets were also leaking a bit I think, although it wasn't obvious. The electric pump was overfilling the carbs because the chamber tops and valves wern't doing their job. Guy "Guy Weller" 9957... MORE

If you turn the key back to "off", but leave it in the ignition, the steering should not lock until you remove the key. Definitely works on my 72, as well as numerous other cars. WRT fuel pump, if it is an SU type, it is designed to deliver much more fue l than the engine can use, so that the carburetors never run out of fuel even when the engine is running flat out. So the pump designed to operate when required, rather than continually. Not sure about other types of pump, though. Charlie '72 RWA (First ever... MORE

Tim- I am not so sure the front disc pistons will release completely (if at all to any great extent) without the disc under normal "rotation" as the pads "ride against" (more or less, "against" being a nominal amount in this sense) the discs, and their passing "pressure" causes the pads to move "outwards" when hydraulic pressure is released (I think!!) Nope. No harm done. At best, you'll fill up the carberator float bowls and the fuel pump should stop running at that point. If it doesn't stop running after a few seconds with the engine off, look for leaks from the carbs. On the earlier cars, the carbs are located directly above the exhaust manifold and any fuel leaks drop onto a hot pipe causing less than desirable results. I'm not sure of the configuration on the 1500 engine. Curt "Curtis Carlson" 9960... MORE
