I attempted to adjust the rear brakes, the left side was fairly loose but t he right was already lightly dragging, I couldn't budge the adjuster. The front brakes didn't release after I pumped the brakes. I have all new lines so I'm sure that thats not the culprit. I have new caliper pistons in stoc k, so I'll try installing them next. As I remember, it's somewhat difficult getting the old ones out. Is it better to retain the outer piston and remo ve the inner piston first, or the other way aound. Any tips here would be... MORE

The Carb has a float chamber which, when filled up, shuts off the flow to the Carb... so, when you are idling and the float valve is closed, and the fuel line is up to pressure, you are essentially doing the same thing... pumping against a closed valve. Shouldn't be a problem... but you could install a cutoff switch (what would happen if you broke your key off in the ignition and it was stuck in the on position? You'd have to unhook the battery to turn off the fuel pump.) Another consideration is that fuel pumps (electronic) are... MORE

Tim, Jack the wheels off the ground and spin them slowly. They should spin freely with only some slight rubbing sounds. If you hear rubbing mostly in one spot of if they get tighter in some spots, you may have too much run-out or the discs are warped. On the wheel bearings, check for too much play by grabbing the tire with two hands in different positions, top and bottom, side to side and diagonally and rock the wheel and see if you can feel any play. Rotate the wheel and listen for any unusual noises from the hub.... MORE

Did this once on an old car =96 intentionally, I might add. Had a Citroen CX estate =96 the one with the trick suspension. Great car, bought from a dodgy dealer to move house with a year=92s tax and test. Pulled up to stop sign once and the headlight fell out. Needed a hammer to free the starter motor to make it work as the PO had removed the heatshield =96 you know the type of car I mean. Anyway, when it came to the time to tax and test it for another year, it was obvious that it... MORE

Well it was in the 80=B0s F here in Michigan, so I took the Sprite for a 10 mile test drive :-) It ran great (thanks Doug) The one thing I noticed is, that the front disc brakes got pretty hot. I assume its either... A: The front brakes are dragging. B: The back brakes aren't engaging and need adjusting. C: The new front wheel bearings aren't installed right. Anyone have any suggestions? Is there any way to check if the caliper pisto ns are retracting? Thanks TimS '63 Sprite MkII Detroit, Mi "Summers, Tim" 9876... MORE

Do you have a bench vice? If you cannot lift the car up to the workbench try some lateral thinking.....Unbolt it and take it to the car! Clamp the vice jaws to the wheel bearing nut, wedge a pry bar in any handy orifice, grunt and ... well you get the idea. You will either shift the wheel nut or ruin a perfectly good vice! Worked for me anyway! Guy "Guy Weller" 9851... MORE

Oh, man!! Just got to this post. This sucks a big one, Paul. But I see from other posts you've been discussing the "situation" with Gerard; good!! If you have another mode of transport around.....yeah, do a "quickie" in all respects. You are not lookin' for a race motor, just a good daily driver, right? Might as well do the rod bearings as well while you've got the sump down to get the pistons out for new rings. You won't be able to replace the end mains without pulling timing gears and rear engine plate but, it is usually... MORE

Jason: Sounds like a blown head gasket. You have always had some oil leaking there? Then, the gasket in this area never really properly "took", Jason. Anyway...."Rats". Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 9866... MORE

"Saved" by Mr. Archibald! Correctomundo, Paul! The book is called: "How To Keep Your Volkswagon Alive - A Manual of Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot" by the infamous John Muir, a hippy-zen type of guy who obviously know his business, VW-wise. And how do I know this, Paul (you might well ask?) Because the back-up vehicle to my Vizard-tuned 1311 RWA '74 Spridget (which did the 5,000rpm sustained run between Stamford & Bridgeport, CT up Rt. 95...flawlessly, I might add!) was a (GEX 1600 powered) '67 VW Beetle. John, I find it hard to believe that you clamp won't hold. More likely you don't have the base of the distributor fully seated in the clamp. It is possible to have the distributor down all the way but not that last 3/ 32 into the clamp. You need to remove the pinch bolt and pry it back open as it's a rather tight fit normally. There is a small ring machined at the base of the distributor that must go into the clamp. Gerard "gerardchateau" 9839... MORE

Hi every one Any one know the best way to remove the 1 7/8 inch wheel bearing retaining nut? I haven't got a spanner that size - but would buy one if I could get hold of one! Should I try and get a socket, ring spanner or box spanner? If so, where from? Any knowledge of cheats gratefully received! Chris '58 Frogeye "howes" 9833... MORE

I've never had a problem with the windshield fogging up. But when I redid the cooling system and put in a new heater and fan, I did hook up the defroster again (it only takes a couple of minutes to put in new hoses on a bugeye). I figured that if the engine started to heat up, I could get more air flowing over the heater element by putting the fan on without having hot air blowing on my feet on a warm day. "Two fingers" - man, that is really loose. You sure the dizzy is all the way down in it's "bore" - sounds like the pinch-bolt isn't "engaging" the "lip", "fully". Think Pixel thought this; sounds right. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 9847... MORE

THsi sounds like the brakes on my Honda, yes, you remove the two bolts on the back side of caliper, and then the pads can be lifted out. You will have to compress the piston manually to make room for the new pads. Mark MarkAlanB@... 9819... MORE

Forgive me for posting this folks but I'd like to tap into the pool of general car knowledge we have. Finances are forcing me to replace the front pads on my girlfriends Alfa 33 myself. It's got these new fangled brakes with a caliper that only has a piston one side. The caliper is not fixed to the hub but to a bracket that holds the pad on the other side of the disc and is turn fixed to the hub. Unlike the Sprite there is not an aperture for withdrawing the pads backwards. It looks like you have... MORE

Correct. Toe-in is the only adjustment. Caster is determined by the upward rise of the frame rails (and why they shouldn't be straightend). Camber can be adjusted in a couple of ways but requires either offset trunnion bushings or some modification to the shock position or shock arm length (via spherical bearing). Hello everyone once again So just got the Midget out for the driving season. She seams to be a little sluggish, almost like it is not tuned. (Did a tune-up last fall) I will be doing an oil change this afternoon to see if that helps. I did put new gas in and a little octane boaster to help out.
