Jens writes: "Thanks Bob, and do enjoy your cup of Java, you've certainly earned it". I thought so to...BUT.....not quite, Jens!! :) You should also have a draught (draft) tube connected to that "catch can" if engine compartment fumes are to be avoided to the extent they can be and the engine compartment is to be kept as clean as it can be. This will obviate the need for a catch can filter. The draft tube's extent of vertical travel should prevent engine contamination from outside foreign matter or you can simply cap the end of the vent tube... MORE

Hi I have just joined the group and have been working on a '68 Midget since last Sept. Previously I had owed a '55 TF and a '54 TD. Having replaced my top/hood I did not find any instructions other than the recommendation that I have a top shop do it. I would be happy to correspond or talk by phone to relate what I did to get mine to fit right. My hood couldn't be returned if it had any installation holes in it (it did) even though it was 1" too narrow. When I first bought the... MORE

Could someone please tell me the Year and engine size for the Datson 210 that will fit into my 1975 Midget 1500 Thanks From Ohio Dave David & Kay Maroscher 21989... MORE

Bill.... "Sidebar"...... Was going to check further on the PerTronix/tach accuracy at higher rpm situation today but major accident on RT.95 along with construction on the "northern route" squelched this short trip! Tomorrow looks better (I hope!). Where a PCV valve or later "closed loop" breathing system is not employed (later post '67 system encompassing fuel system), there exists no means to evacuate crankcase pressure/vapours. David Vizard points the way in this respect in accordance with his "bible" on Series A engines. In such a case.... one must go back in time to the pre-emission "ventilation" theory. In practice,... I have a Weber on my 73 Midget 1275. I will send you a picture later this evening that shows how mine is set up. There is a screw with a hole in it that holds the throttle cable sheeth but lets the cable through. One thing I had to do was to make a small mounting plate to hold the throttle return spring. Stay tuned.... -Tom "tmruwart" 21944... MORE

I have done some research on this. Yes there is a one piece pulley available and it's $72.00. I also found the correct 2 piece replacent pulley for the car for $20.00. Go to minimania.com. This leads me to ask thequestion why is Moss selling the same pulley for 3 times as much?????? "Evan R Katon" 21932... MORE

Sorry Kelly I don't (after today at work I barley remember my own) I am going to go to pull-a-part on saturday to scout out what maybe there. I apprecaiate the offer for the other pulley JR but let me first see what I can find. I'm probabbly am being a little anal about this but I really don't want the 2 piece pulley if I can avoid it. I'll keep y'all posted Thanks Evan "Evan R Katon" 21914... MORE

Evan, Sorry to hear about your pulley incedent. Glad you weren't out in the middle of nowhere. I don't know of anyone who makes a one piece pulley but maybe you could find one from a company that sells MG racing parts? I can probably round up a spare oem pulley if you want to go back that route. Let me know. It was good having you bring your car Saturday. It's certainly refreshing to see what can be done to a Midget when one wants to "enhance" the sporting nature of these little cars! JR - the orange... MORE

I have a 73 Midget and recently rebuilt the front calipers and replaced the rear cylinders, put in new rotors and pads on the front and new shoes in the back. I replaced the flexible brake line in the rear and cleaned *all* the brake lines (inside and out) and the master cylinder. I then proceeded to put in DOT 5 brake fluid. Everything seems to be fine and there are no leaks anywhere in the system. I used a MightyVac to bleed the lines (in the recommended order - twice) but the brakes are still *very* soft -... MORE

Speaking of yesterdays show. On my way back from the show I heard a loud clunks noise come from the car. I was traveling in traffic and thought I may have run over something. I checked the guages and all looked ok. I checked them again about 30 seconds later and saw the temp gauge head right for the hot side of the gauge. Buy this time I was close to the rest area on the highway and pulled off. opened the hood and found the belt had come off. Ok I thought the belt had been throuwn. Upon... MORE

What sort of condition is the water in - the water in the radiator, that is. The oil has to be going somewhere. It has to be dripping, or being burnt, or could it be, due to head gasket failure or similar, being forced under pressure into the coolant. You haven't got one of those Star Trek matter transmission thingies in your engine have you? :-) "Roger Stinson" 21885... MORE

Well, Rob.... If it's not being "lost" or "consumed", including finding it's way into the cooling system via a leaky head gasket, then somebody forgot to "top off" after the last oil/filter change immediately following engine start to check for oil pressure after filling initially with 3 US quarts!! I've seen this happen. The guy is back in a few hundred miles wondering where all his oil went as the level is just below the "min" mark so soon after an oil change! :):) Cap'n. Nieither nor, Rob.... My feeling is you have another problem that has nothing to do with the breathing, ASUMMING both breathers & lines are freely breathing (open & clear) otherwise the catch tank would be full of oil. How much are you "losing" by the seals (sump, rear main, timing cover)? Or, are you getting "bluish" exhaust smoke indicating the engine is "using" it? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 21879... MORE

G'day all I spent a bit of time last week fixing a Mk IIA Sprite just purchased by Duncan, a new customer. He bought it as he had always wanted a Sprite, and it was love at first sight - pretty Sky Blue, nice paint. Now Duncan is 6'3" tall, and in his early fourties. The Sprite didn't run - flat battery, master cylinder just been rebuilt and brakes/clutch not bled yet, no registration, hadn't been driven for 3 years. So he bought it to me to get it repaired and registered. Well by the time we changed the... MORE

G'day Jason You can remove the gearbox side plate with the engine and box in the car. It helps if you have a hoist, as you really need to do it from below. If you don't have a hoist, just jack it up as far as you can get it, put it on secure axle stands (no, not bricks!) and crawl under with the 7/16" spanner (wrench?) in your hand. Now don't forget to drain the oil first, will you! avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 21870... MORE

Neil, yes, you're correct in thinking the canmber angle is not adjustable. I can't think of much that would cause this. Something must be different from one side to the other - one possibility is that you have different coil springs on each side, maybe a 1500 on one and a 1275 or earlier on the other - this would cause a bit of a lean to one side which might look like different camber angles. Have you measured the height on both sides? Regards David "David Jacobs" 21860... MORE

Hello Folks Have one question About 3 years ago I had my trans on my 1971 1275 rebuilt. Well about a year later it started to leak oil out around the inspection plate on the passenger side. I do have a new gasket for that but here it comes Is there any way to replace that gasket with the trans still in the car? Thanks to all Jason 1971 MG Midget 1964 MG Midget "Jason Gross" 21846... The clutch was engaged when the petal was up. Not supposed to do that. Now recall that I had the Brakes and Clutch Repaired in Cincinnati about 5 years ago. All was fine, as good as it gets with the orig. design brakes for many short trips. This included a new Master cyl. and Slave cyl. Well, after posing the question to the "Club List" the best idea was that the relief hole in the master cyl. was plugged not allowing the presser to bleed off thus allowing the slave cyl. to move the pushrod back and engaging the... how big does a catch tank have to be for an uprated midget mk3 at the mo ive got a line form the timing case and rocker cover to a 600c tank and then from this to a K&N filter at the bottom of the engine bay i have just changed the oil and it seems to have used alot- alot alot! could the breather be to restrictiveand be causing increased oil consumption or do you think it may be the new oil? cheers Rob "Andrew" 21815... Just tuned 69 sprite and set SU carbs, reset mixture after checking plugs. Car runs great and without hestitation on pickup. However on turns that are sweeping at high speed on sharp at lo speed, engine starts to stall and backfire then stop after approximately 1 minue (seems until fuel is drained from carb bowls). Stop car and turn ignition off and on and car starts and I am off to the races, no problem until next extremem turn! I Have cleaned carbs and float camber bowls numerous times! ANY SUGGESTIONS? G'day Chris The Midget fan has a spacer, approx 1/4" thick, between the back of the plastic fan and the front of the water pump pulley. It pushes the fan forward so that it does not hit the oil seperator on the timing cover. You can get one for a lousy $5 or so, or make one up yourself. Dont space the fan out with washers - too much risk of the bolts coming loose and carving a nice round hole in the back of your radiator! avagoodday Colin "Colin Dodds" 21760... MORE
