Dunno' about the release bearing, but judder on starting in 1st gear could be from oil on the clutch disc. Of course it could be from a lot of other things too... "tloutrec" 8847... MORE

thanks to all of you for your time, input, and knowledge. I'll let ya'll know what my intentions are shortly. I need to make the decision quickly, fot this car will either be my daily driver, or my wknd toy. Decisions, decisions...? At any rate, I do want a reliable car capable of hwy cruising(80mph comfortably) I may keep the 1098 or get the 1275 or 1300 seen @ http://www.minimania.com/pdfile/mini14.pdf pges 5-7 Anyway, thanks once again for all the tps, advice and opinions, they are greatly appreciated! ~Rob 66'Babyblu "babyblumg" 8846... Thanks for the replies about the Piston order. Now a query about the clutch. The carbon bearing has been replaced by a much deeper roller bearing- seems a good idea, but in order to fit it the circular boss which is fitted to the centre of the clutch itself to allow the bearing to compress the springs has been removed so that the roller bearing now pushes directly on the spring fingers themselves. Is this normal? Before I took it apart, I noticed that there was some judder in releasing the clutch in first gear unless the engine was... MORE

The question is that I want to know the same as above for a 1973 Midget 1275, all stock stuff 145x13. Tks Jorge Dimitrakis 73 Midget 1275 RWA South Pole "Jorge Dimitrakis" 8879... MORE

Brett- Very nice, man and an absolute street- compatible "cool" daily (nice weather) driver as well. Way to go; great promotion gimmick. Should be quite a hit and attention-getter. The contrasting paint really makes the car a "stand out". People love stuff like this. Good idea. Let us know please, when you have pictures of completed project. I, for one, would like to see the finished product, including shots of the inside and engine bay, if not too much trouble. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 8852... MORE

Rob Don't worry about resale value do whatever pleases you the most, but in my case I have just put a new 1098 in my 66 Sprite (coz it's a fun car not a fast car). If I wanted a fast car I would buy an E type or something. Have fun Dave (UK) "David Dixon" 8841... MORE

Dave I work for one of the few remaining mass production engine building companies in the UK, and we use selective assembly on con rods to achieve the optimum piston topping dimension. Piston topping is the dimension from the cylinder head to the top of the piston at TDC, in our case the con rods are divided into length grades and are selected to give the optimum piston topping for each cylinder. The point of all this is that different cylinders in the same engine can have different length con rods depending on where the piston and crank fall... MORE

Too bad you didn't post this earlier this week. I just pulled a head from a '76 I am parting out. The engine had only 35k original miles, but I needed the crank and cam for my "rat-car", so I have been selling the rest of the engine. The head is still available, but now it is on eBay. http://cgi6.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewListedItems&userid brett@... I think I paid $350 for the rebuilt head that I have now (including the valves). If I would have found this donor car a year ago, I would have saved the money and just used this head.... MORE

ok, so from what I gather(sorry if I seem slow), but the 1098 w/ a 5spd datsun tranny, and regearing my rear axle to say...3.0 or 4.2, i should have no problem getiing to & maintaining good hwy. speeds of say 75 at about 400RPM? Am I correct? If so, I'd really love to stay w/ the stock engine. Regards, ~Rob 66' BabyBlu "babyblumg" 8837... MORE

Well, I have the Datsun 5 speed with a 3.9 and cruising at 65 leaves me in the 3000-3100 range. 70 plus is no problem. While it can be unerving or noisey, these engine were designed to be high revving and they're made to take it. Not the same can be said for the 1500 Spitfiget engines. After you spend a year cutting up and making all sorts of other accomodations to your Sprite to fit a straight six, you'll have a car that will only be good for driving a straight line. I'm not against modifying these cars... MORE

I did mention it was a "Pseudo" Race Car... didn't I? Standard 1500cc engine Crane FireBall electronic Ignition and PS-20 Coil Weber Downdraft Carb w/ K&N filter Pacesetter Headers Monza Free-flow exhaust system Standard Transmission and 3.9:1 rear end Roll bar supposedly came from a midget, but I had to do a major modification of my driver's seat and headrest to get the seat far enough back to allow me to drive. The top has been permanently removed (and will be sold shortly). This is now a fair weather car only... with a tarp in the trunk for emergencies.... MORE

Babyblumg- Take a look at: Pixelsmith@... for the page on ratios and diffs along with tire size for speed equivalents; very educational. I've run a 1098 for almost two years with the 5 speed and 3.7 diff on 175/70's and turn about 3300-3400 for 70-75. So, 4,000 with a 3.9 for this speed sounds about in the ballpark and with the 3.9, you should have decent acceleration through the first 3 gears in any event. Sure, you'd do better with even a stock 1275.....on the other hand, the 1098 is such a "smoothie"!! If my new 1293 runs half... MORE

I hear you, Gerard. Well, more or less exactly my own thoughts on this, Pixel. Though I have very little of your hands-on expertise in such matters, I most definitely appreciate and understand the theory, for sure, inclusive of the drive-line mods required to handle the torque. F'rinstance: I'd love having an extra 1.000hp per side on the SAAB I fly. The performance in climb rate alone would be awsome....... but you'd have to redesign the entire airframe to handle it (and "balance" it; e.g., "engine out" performance characteristics in terms of directional control/stability to name just one consideration... thanks for all of the information. I have gotton hold of a chevy straight 6, that I am told should fit quite nicely. Not sure of what the torque of that nature will do to the unibody. My main goal is to be able to cruise I-10/I-49 @ 70-80 mph w/o keeping the engine @ high RPM's. Not sure the 1098(which I have confirmed is the "latter issue", would be able to run like tht, even w/ a 5spd tranny and a re-geared differential.???? I can confirm that if an old engine is flushed out, it spells disaster! When my husband gave our son his Triumph Spitfire, he decided that the best thing to do was to give the engine a good clean out. So he flushed it through several times, then after giving it a bit of a service, decided to go hell for leather down the A1. Needless to say we got a phone call to say the car had blown up!. Yes, the flushing had got rid of all the crud holding the engine together. A nut on the end... MORE

Or as we in the colonies 'oft' say.. If it aint broke....dont fix it. Do think the difference might be the year of vehicle, how it has been maintained in the past.......and of course how large your credit line is if the crank goes grunk and the pistons go pop after sludge removal. chuck n tx croche 8832... Babyblumg- I, too, bought a Sprite with a stock 1098 & transferred the Datsun 5 speed from my wrecked '67 into my Frog, along with the 3.7 diff as well. As the two lower gears of the Datsun box are lower than the English box, no acceleration performance penalty too any great extent. BTW, this 1098 has got to be one of the sweetest running Series A types I have ever run, too the extent I am saving it as a "spare", should I ever have a problem with the 1293 which has replaced it. The 1275 (plus .020)... MORE

Dave, 1 and 2 would not normally be intercchageable if all the numbers are on the =3D=0D same side. The 1275 rods have an offset on the big end. # 1 and 3 offset t o=3D=0D ward the rear of the engine and #2 and 4 face the front. If I'm not mistak e=3D=0D n 1275 rods are symetrical and I think can be flipped around when you insta l=3D=0D l new pistons, but you'll need to closely examime what you actually have wi t=3D=0D h one and two. If the last rebuilder mointed the pistons wrong, this might... MORE

Thanx Brad... Im not really sure what to do. I am going to strip the car down, repair the 3 rust spots I have, add metal to streaghthen the belly for footboard & seating area, then coat the underbelly with a spray on lining. repaint the whole car(probably the current color...maybe navy blue..who knows). I feel like putting in a chevy 327 of small block v-6, with a 5 spd tranny. just not sure what will fit or how difficult it will be to do so. Either way, I will probably sell my 1098cc which run VERY well, and... MORE

ok, here is the short of it, in the fles section, I have posted pics of my 66' Midget. This is my first full restoration on a "foriegn" classic. I have restored old mustangs, and boosted the looks and under the hood, but with this car, not sure where to go. this is my question: Should I stay original, ie. 1098 engine, 4 speed, Lucas wiring, etc... OR I would like to put in a 1300 from minimania.com, a datsun 5-speed, a new style distributor, etc... I have been told it would decrease the "value" of the car, yet... MORE

I could do with some advice on the following. I'm in the process of stripping down the 1275cc engine in my Midget. I'm now at the stage of removing the pistons and as expected, each of the con rods big-ends are stamped with a number to indicate the cylinder into which they are fitted. However, whilst the con rod in cylinder 4 is stamped '4' and the con rod in cylinder 3 is stamped '3', the con rod in cylinder 2 is stamped '1' and the con rod in cylinder 1 is stamped '2'. In other words they seem... MORE

For any of the mods you are thinking of making it is not nescessary to cut body panels firewalls etc.Go for it Everyone or mostly everyone changes the 1098 for a 1275 and if you want a car that can handle distance and freeway driving then change for a Datsun 5 speed. It will not detract from the value of the car as you are not cutting it or changing the outward appearance. The only person who would say the value has decreased is a concourse freak or someone trying to BS you into selling a lot cheaper. Hello everyone - Well I finally got my 74 Midget back, complete with a rebuilt engine. Still some major & minor repairs needed before my first spin on the road in it. Specifically I need a brake master cylinder and a clutch master&slave. I was told that what I have now was un-rebuildable so I am curious if anyone out there has any new or used spares that they may want to get rid of. My car was been sitting for about 15 years so obviously all of the rubber piping is also going to be replaced. Any good... MORE

A problem I had when I first got the car was that a PO had bent the damping rods (or whatever that are called) which screw into the top of the bell. Only slight, but caused that piston to stick occasionally. It was hell to find - not covered in the Haynes manual, which is otherwise pretty good for tuning carbs. I've just had my carbs rebuilt (after only 30 years!) as it refused to star t in -10C after New Year - cost =A3150 ($220) for the Full Monty. When I chec ked them closely, they were badly... MORE
