BMW already sell the Z3 with 3-series 6 cylinder engines: the =93cooking=94 2.2 and 3.0 and the full 320bhp M3 engine (M Roadster). The first two engines are new sizes (used to be a 2.0 =914=92 and a 2.8 =916=92), so mayb e this was what he was talking about. The M Roadster was the basis of the Z3 Coupe and appears to be a real beast of a car. The latest M5 is now a 400bhp V8, and 7-series are V8s or V12s. Very Interesting article Gary, I wonder why I haven't seen it (which issue ?) This might tie in with an encounter I had at the local filling station in Leamington Spa - 2 miles from Warwick. Then how could you think that the generator and starter would weigh as much as: cast iron exhaust manifold intake manifold w/ 2 carbs and air cleaners exhaust pipe w/muffler pedal box, pedals and master cylinders w/wiper motor steering column, steering wheel, gauges, most of the wiring harness. and various other small items... ... not to mention the driver, some of whom brag about being in excess of 250 lbs! I'm replacing my wishbone's following cracking round the fulcrum pin. Now that I've got the things off, I notice the holes in the chassis legs where the inner fulcrum bolt passes through are not round anymore! Movement over the years I guess. Does anyone know if this is dangerous? If so what's the answer? I loathe to take the engine out and replace the front chassis as the genral condition is good. I've thought about welding some plates on with the right size holes in them, or could I just clean up the area and glue some plates in... MORE


Gerald- With no intent whatsoever is being a wise guy; if it is not as intended by the manufacturer, it ain't good. As to whether "it" is "dangerous", the foregoing precludes this question. You don't even want to have to "go there" to find out. ("Oh, gee whiz, my left front wheel just folded and I am losing control, sliding across the highway and head on into a car occupied by a guy, his wife and three kids". Yeah, rrriiight~~). IMHO: If it's got to do with steering, brakes or suspension (vehicle "control") it's GOT to be fixed RIGHT... MORE


Oh, forgot to mention..... The aluminum head comes with the usual 9 stud holes however, 2 more are marked in the casing for those who wish to convert (or have) to 1 bolt, 10 stud later type. Also, larger valve sizes (other then mentioned previously) might be a problem according to a conversation I overheard at Sports & Classics the other day. For accurate info on this, I would check with Don Racine at MiniMania who's firm offers this head with the larger 1.4 intake valves. He oughta know. Of course, if he tells you, he may have to... Hi, "TT"- Depends upon the application. For the guy who's simply wants a good, stock motor to him around on a day by day basis, or the fellow who drives his once in a while on nice day "restoration", no. For the serious, street driven "tuned" application: don't leave home without it. Fr'instance, I am installing a Rivergate- built 1293 "tailored" for a Judson Super- charger. On today's readily available garbage octanes, heat is a big issue assuming you wish to run decent ignition advance to make installation of the blower worthwhile in terms of the extra power (torque)... A day or so after I put my Midget up on 4 jack stands, a puddle of "mystery" fluid/oil appeared under the L rear portion of my car. It was yellowish in color. Because I had my tire ramp still underneath the car, the fluid dripped onto that and flowed to a different location. Not sure if it was brake fluid, since I did remove the drum and possibly pushed the brake pedal causing a leak or overflow from my brake cylinder (soon to be replaced). Listers: A Midget owner here in Akron has asked me to post her car for sale to the list. 1979 Midget, metallic green with gray interior, no rust, excellent condition. Engine just totally rebuilt, new everything in engine, new clutch, Weber carb, new exhaust, new springs, new brakes, wiring harness replaced in 2000. Top is four years old and in excellent condition. Also includes tonneau cover and boot cover. All mechanical work was done by members of the local MG club with receipts for all work done in the last three years. Matt, Apparently, no one saw your question. To fix or broken axle, you'll need to remove the brake drums and axles from both side and pull the differencial. Drain the housing first. Once everything is out, you'll need to make sure to flush out all the metal from the diff and housing. Reinstall the diff and replace with a new axle. Make sure you replace the one good one on the same side it came from and if you get a used axle, get one from the same as your broken one. You'll need new paper gaskets and new... MORE


Hi everyone, I am rebuilding my '58 Frogeye and am looking at putting the rear axle back on (it hasn't had one, or rear springs etc. since I bought it). It has a neat home made wooden dolly though! I will be putting a road going 1275 engine and ribbed gear box in. however, does this mean that I have to replace the original axle? is there an ID number that would confirm if the axle is original? If I need to replace it, what axle should I use? Finally, advice on the type of springs and dampers that... MORE


Your bugeye will use 1/4 elliptic springs. The axle housing for these has fittings unique to the 1/4 springs so the housing is not 100% interchangable with later cars. Fitting a 1275/ribcase should have no bearing on the axle housing. Rearend ratios are a matter of preference. A 3.9:1 is as high as I'd go for any highway use. If you don't have springs, a new set will keep you from posting questions about leaning to the driver's side. schicmg@... 8067... MORE


Cressa, I have the exact same MG! Mine currently has the engine completely torn apart, with much of it soaking in cleaning fluid ready for a rebuild. The reason a clutch replacement is so expensive is because you must remove the engine to replace the clutch. I live in Newport, Oregon. Which part of Oregon do you live in? It might be worth your time to call Jeff at British and Swedish Car Spares in Alpharetta. While his primary business is used parts, he does have access to new parts, and sometimes has great prices. He might be able to find a properly rebuilt engine at a very good price. He might, maybe, even have a very good used engine cheap, since he has been taking these cars apart for the past 25 years. According to Moss, the downflow rads were used up to midget #60440, which is Oct or Nov 1967. The first 1275 was Midget 52390, so there were abt 8000 1275 Midgets with 1275 and downflow, and there were abt an equal no of Sprites. Moss says there were 33204 1275 Sprites with 1275 downflow, but this is obviously an error on their part. Trivia, anyone? "tloutrec" 7998... MORE


You better check your details no pre 64 cars had 1275 as standard. First 1275 are mk3 midget or mk4 sprike. "Beckers" 8119... MORE


May I point out that a 1275cc engined Bugey is NOT 'bone stock'. The 1275 engined sprites and Midgets had a more efficient radiator than the bugeye, and even they run a little hot. Fitting a 1275 to a downflow radiator can only be worse. Perhaps you could have your downflow radiator recored with one of the modern "high efficiency' cores, that will probably make a noticeable difference. Good luck! G "Grant Bowyer" 7959... MORE

I run a 100hp 1275 mk2 Sprite with a v-flow rad and have no cooling problems at all. I have an electric fan which rarely operates but I do have an oil cooler with thermostat. Jeremy mk2 Sprite "Jeremy Cogman" 7983... MORE
