Hello Can anybody help? I've recently bought a semi restored sprite from the local council that was offered for sale/auction. I bid =A35 pounds as a joke and now the cars mine. My problem is the bodywork has been totally restored and resprayed minus the chassis plate. In the boot of the car was a set of number plates, so I filled in the v62 form from the post office and i've now got the registration document. It states that the car was first registered in april 66, the engine is a 1098cc 'a' series, but the chassis no.... MORE

Got my brakes all back together and they are working great - thanks to everyone for the help. Now I'm refurbishing the side curtains and have a couple of questions. First, is the Plexiglas panel closest to the windshield supposed to move. Mine don't on either side. Second, does anyone have any tricks on getting the rubber gaskets in? The bottom and the side closest to the windshield went in fine (except that they came apart at the corner - I guess I'll use super glue), but I'm having a heck of a time with the long part that... William This is a balancing hole allowing the piston to rise and fall correctly and must be clear. If the rear of the air filter box is put on upside down it obscures the hole and the car will not run right like what happend to my car when I got it. Terry "Terry Isherwood" 7359... MORE

Yes. With the port restricted, when you 'floor it' the carburettor would rise slowly due to the restricted flow of air into the space below the piston. Varying the weight of oil in the damper would be the correct way to achieve the same effect. The spring controls how far the piston lifts due to airflow through the carb. Fitting a stronger spring will only ensure that at a given airflow the piston sits lower than it should. For example, if you bored out your engine, you may find that the piston hits the top of its travel at,... MORE

YOur car leaks oil???!!!! I would have that looked at immediatley!!! It sho uld be pouring oil............... LOL I am just joking, depending on the year Midget you have, they are very prone to oil leakage, also known as "marking it's territory". Let us know what year car you have and if possible what size engine so that we can better diagnose your car "unseen". Congratulations on your new toy , Brad "Brad Fornal" 7356... MORE

Bill B- That hole is a breather for the underside of the carburettor piston. If you restrict it too much, it would cause problems similar to those you get if you have thick oil in the dashpot. In practice, the air cleaner never really lines up with the hole very well, restricting it by as much as half. I guess it wouldnt hurt to install a tube to act as a dowel- although if it were me, I'd enlarge the hole slightly and use thin-wall stainless tube, so as to restrict teh opening as little as possible. A breather... MORE

I like my "Tuning S.U Carburetters" Including Full Needle Charts & Gunson Colortune tuning by GR Wade. TO: Grant B. (Explanation of SU principals) It makes absolutely perfect sense. Read you loud and clear! Now, let's see if I can use this information in practical terms which will show whether I understand the prinicipal well enough to apply them to my application. So, for a supercharged (Judson, fr'instance) engine, you would probably lean toward a pretty heavy spring to begin with, considering the engine's potential breathing ability with the blower. And considering the potential for rate of change (pretty rapid with the blower) a pretty heavy oil (say 20w-50?) would probably be a good weight to... MORE

When I purchased my '66 Midget it had no speedo cable, so I thought it would only need a cable to get the speedo working. Unfortunately, I have now fitted the cable and it still doesn't work. If I spin a small screwdriver in the back of the gauge the needle moves, so I suppose it must be at the other end. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should check first. shaped" tooth jamming device. Sounds like a handy tool indeed (read: brilliant), but I took the easy way this time, and went with the advice from Brent and Tim of removing the sump and jamming a 2x4 in the crankshaft to stop the rotation. Only managed to break my cheapo socket extension in the process, but was successful with finally removing the bolts and the flywheel. On to my piecemeal approach of removing, inspecting, and replacing (if necessary) engine components. Advice welcomed. At this point, I have no intention of getting into the guts as this was a running... MORE

Gary The gear lever on an A series box has a large ball which is the pivot for the lever and an extension which is the thing that moves the selectors. There are three different lengths (that I have found!) for the extension. This means that if you have a 'short extension' gear lever and a 'long extension' box you will not get the gears in properly and it will jump out. The contra situation is jamming it in 1st because the 1st/2nd hub has been pushed too far... As long as the extensions on the bottom of the... MORE

"But that has never kept me from speaking out before"! Nor should it, Bill! However, getting back to two carbs "sharing" the K&N: Assuming it is one of the "large" oval type filters, completely open all around it's circumference, with "plates" on either side; I do not see the problem as this filter should flow more air than what two 1&1/4 SU's feeding four cylinders in normal, stock operation will require, most likely, considering this type is used on 2 barrel 45 DCOE's and the like. I am talking about the filter which is 4&1/2 by 7. What will... MORE

Had a great weekend here in Michigan, I got the Sprite running after three years in pieces! It sounds pretty good, need to adjust some things. Has any one ever brazed a radiator? I have a leak at the sleeve that holds the temp. sending unit. I hope I can braze it while the radiator is still in the car. What do I need to know? Any help would be much appreciated. Pete, I have removed my 1500 flywheel both the way Haynes says "block of wood to block crankshaft" and used a pry bar through the starter ring to hold the flywheel. To use the wood, remove the oil pan and insert a 2x4 between the block and the crank. Using a pry bar, helped a lot with a second person to hold the pry bar, then popped the flywheel bolts loose. Having a hell of a time trying to remove the 4 retaining bolts for the flywheel on my recently obtained 1500. The crankshaft is rotating, and I can't get the bolts to budge. Haynes mentions locking the crankshaft in position with a wedge of wood, but does that mean I have to remove the timing cover and sprocket too?? Has anyone managed to remove the flywheel without having to remove the timing cover? I just want to mount the engine to my stand from the endplate. Thanks, Pete "peteski43068" 7176... MORE

Anyone who does not have the good sense to keep their guns locked up where they should be is hardly going to remember to keep 1 or 2 Blanks as the first shot or shots in their clip or chamber. At close range you would be surprised how much damage a blank can do.The long and the short of it is that if you have children you should have your guns where they can NOT be accessed by them. FWIW I mounted a nine inch fan from J C Whitney as a pusher. Install was very easy and with a variable thermostat I can set the fan for neary any temp. Definitely makes for a less cluttered engine bay and gets rid of that awful fan clutch. I lost two radiator cores to that thing before I got fed up and went electric. I am not 100% sure of the sixe but I do beleive it ot be a 10 inch fan. I mounted it as a pusher to clean up the engine compartment and besides, it fit like it was a factory installation.
