Tim, Depends on whether you have pre-fit cam bearing or not.. Prefit have no slit in the bearing. The slit type needs to be reamed. Many shops these days don't have small enough tools for them, so I always get the prefit type though they are sometimes hard to find. Let me know if you need help finding some. I am rebuilding the transmission in my 1970 midget. After replacing the layshaft, layshaft gear and bearings, syncros, and 1st/2nd gear I am almost ready to button it back up. While checking it out I notice that all gears seem to shift smoothly except second. I really have to slam it to get it into second. Everything seems to be lining up OK and still it is very difficult to get it into second. Based on the extremely ground-up condition of the 1st/2nd gear I am a little worried that this was the origional problem and the resulting metal... MORE

Listers, thanks for the info on 1275 backplates. I'm taking the opportunity presented by a cracked backplate to convert to a 5-speed. To help off-set the cost, I'm selling a professionally rebuilt MKII 948. Any advice on fair market value? The MKII is different than the Bugeye 948, mostly changes in the head (double valve springs, larger valves? and carbs). Does the rarity of the MKII translate to the engine as well? schicmg@... 7088... MORE

I've installed a 10" as a puller and removed the stock fan. I'm using a stock down flow radiator and a 1275 engine. No problems. schicmg@... 7087... MORE

I am running the 1098 sprung clutch (diameter 7.25inc). Is the 6.5inch diaphragm clutch from the 1275 a straight swap, or does the flywheel have to be redrilled? Is the clutch actuating mechanism OK for this conversion or does this have to change also? Thanks for any advice. "moynanet" 7060... MORE

Hi all, I=B4m having trouble locating an engineering firm that is conversant with midget motors. I recently spoke with a firm in Nijmegen who are specialised in mini a-series engines, but didn=B4t want to touch my midget engine. The minimum work I=B4m looking for is boring, honing and placing the piston s and conrods and crank. I plan to do the rest myself. However if they=B4re good I=B4ll spend the ex tra money on them for a complete rebuild. I hope to hear some suggestions! Cheerio Olgierd MK3 "Hubertine & Olgierd" 7040... MORE

I am replacing the wheel bearings on my bugeye with disc breaks. When I pulled of the hub the inside race of the inside bearing stayed on the spindle right up against the collar. Have tried to find a bearing puller as it instructs in the Haynes manual, but the car parts stores don't seem to know what I mean. I've removed the backing plate and tried a punch, but that doesn't seem to work. I've also tried pounding a small screw driver down between the race and the collar, but no movement either. Any ideas on how to... MORE

True, true, Martin. Being human isn't easy!! Thanks for your understanding! Maniflow most likely better item anyway, Martin, as pointed out by educated, fellow lister. Still, I hate mis-advising another, good intentions notwithstanding; must be more careful in future. Incidentally, have you racing fuel handy for your 10.5-1 "monster" motor? What kind of gas are you planning on running considering "substantial" static compression ratio, anyway? 1&3/4 SU (or 1&1/2) or Weber DCOE notwithstanding, this "tuned unit" obviously should "deliver" the goods when you get it properly set up, assuming you have octanes available to run decent ignition advance. Should... MORE

Reassembling my front breaks and the instructions that came with the kits said to reassemble the pistons in the same direction that they were originally. They were installed with the cutout in all different directions. I assume that this is incorrect, like other thing have been on my car when I've gotten them apart. The haynes manual for my son's MGB says that the cutout should be aligned toward the hub. Does this sound right for a sprite (bugeye with later model disc brakes on front)? Also, which holes in the brake shoes do the springs go in? Any... MORE

Just went through a bunch of papers the PO gave me about 1 year ago. Found the original window sticker for the car. The port of entry was New Orleans, the dealer was in Kentucky. It listed for $4150.00 with options Anti-roll bar $35.00 and tonneau cover $65.00,tansportation $153.51 for a grand total of $4403.51. Checked it against the BMIHT certificate and all is the same except the engine was changed at some point in time. It also says the anual fuel cost is $375 baised on 65 cents per gallon. Weight 2250 lbs 3.91 axel ratio. Interesting Doug... MORE

Martin I wouldn't bother with split 40's on a 948 (a single 45 with the right chokes would work better). 40 DCOE's are fairly easy to come by but are invariably worn out and jetted for Fords - see the back of 'Motorsport News' etc. Any DCOE manifold will work - the 40 and 45 are interchangable. My favourite DCOE manifold is the fabricated steel Maniflow item - 5" is the best compromise although you might want to go with the 3 1/2" if you have retained your inner wings and want to run decent sized ram pipes and... Another immmediate and quick test for missing ring gear teeth is to bump the engine by putting the car in gear and rocking the car until the engine turns a bit, giving you a new position on the ring gear. Since the engine typically will stop in one of two common positions, it is not uncommon to have one or two trouble spots on the ring gear. This is a likely cause based on your symptoms. Lubrication could be the cause too, but seems less likely since it's new. Gerard "gerardchateau" 6986... MORE

Matthew, I don't think you can make any visible engine modification like changing the carb while still under smog requirements. unless I'm mistaken, most shops will refuse to test if equipments has been changed. I had a guy refuse to smog my '75 after noticing that the car had been retrofitted with an extra vacuum switch that was not connected. It was a recall on early cars, but really wasn't necessary, but wouldn't do it because it was disconnected. I'm not an expert in this area, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. However, that said, the 1500 engines... MORE

I repaired my tonneau cover which had a fixing stud pulled out. Where this was the material was doubled over and stitched (hemmed). I undid the stitching. Cut out a length of tonneau material (6") I bought from an upholstery shop. Evostuck it into the hem and redid the stitching using waxed thread from the upholstery shop using the same stitching holes. I fitted a new fixing stud. Perfect. Almost undetectable and has not pulled out again. Just needs that bit of extra TLC knowing the trauma it has been through. Hope this helps. Terry "Terry Isherwood" 6984... MORE

Hi Dwheil I had exactly the same problem with my 66 Sprite when I first got it. I took the tach out opened it up and located a variable resister (pot) inside. By marking the position of the screwdriver slot and trial and error adjustments and test drives at 30mph, 60mph and normal idle I managed to calibrate it in about half an hour. I think (from memory) for a standard 1098 engine and box fitted with standard ratio diff 1000 revs equates to 16.4 mph. Look on the Midget & Sprite web site or ask the list if... MORE

Pete, Sounds like you have the exact engine stand as I do. My 1500 is mounted directly to the backplate. i removed the flywheel and used the bottom starter hole and the one directly across from it for the bottom two posts and the two top holes just outboard of the block. I did put the two top bellhousing bolts back in the block just for extra plate to block support. Also I should mention, I had to put the engine on a bench to do the crank and rear seal, but that was no problem. Brent "Brent Wolf"... MORE
