Ok. I now have the engine out and am cleaning and re-installing the Mini Mania real seal modification. As it kept leaking even after installing it, I have an idea and would like some opinions. This time my plan is to drill a hole in the bottom of the lower half of the aluminum ring and install a 3/16 inch diameter tube which I will run out the side of the tranny housing. This tube will be run to the mechanical fuel pump which is not used on this engine as it uses an electric one. I will then... MORE

Before you fit new points, you should make sure the vernier adjuster is in the central position, IE wind it all the way one way, unwind it all the way the other way (counting the number of turns) and then wind it back half the numbe rof turns you counted in the previous step. Then set your timing by the age-old method of twisting the distributor. Once your timing is set and the distributor clamp tightened, you can use the vernier to fine-tune your timing and get it spot-on. The vernier turns both ways, so you can advance or... MORE

Yep! No mechanical fan, Brad. However, in the "shots" of the engine compartment (9th row? 2nd picture from the left), I think I can make out "through" the radiator (aluminum or aluminum painted?) a fitting for an electrical fan mounted forward of the radiator? Furthermore: If in fact you can't come up with an "o" ring that is suitable. Send me the dimensions in question, and I will look through the variety that I carry here at work and try to get you a match. Let me know how you make out Dave in NY "Stevens, David" 6250... MORE

G'day from down under, I have just put new points and condenser and plugs in my 1275cc mk 4 sprite, Question is- on the micrometer adjustment on the distributor itself- does one advance or retard the ignition?? Does the ignition advance with wear on the points,or does it retard? I guess that you are meant to adjust the micrometer thingy either one way or the other when putting in a new set of points. regards and respect, Chris B. "chris broughton" 6243... MORE

Tim The Haynes manual gives shows it at 150 for the 948,1098 and 1275. It's in the front of the engine section. Doug 77 "Doug Pletcher" 6223... MORE

I assume the engine is in the car so first gear and the hand brake are about the only options. It's the way I went as mine nut spun off the engine adding more weight to rebuilding an engine yourself instead of having it done. If the engine is out, Haynes recommends a block of wood crammed between crank and block. Rob '75 Midget "Rob Coxworth" 6224... MORE

I got the oil (sump) pan installed, I cut a little off of the new cork seal and used the old seal in the other end. Now on to the timming cover, I wasn't sure how tight to torque the pully nut on the crankshaft. I looked through the Hayne's mannual but didn't see it. Anyone know? Tim Way back when I was rebuilding my 948 the seals had to be cut to fit. I would cut them just a wee touch above the pan so there is some slight compression. I think it's still done that way but I could be wrong. Doug 77 "Doug Pletcher" 6205... MORE

I was trying to refit the oil (sump) pan, got all gooed up with gasket sealer, put new seals in the ends and they were both too long. Moss sent one made of cork and another made of rubber with a plastic core. My question is, are they supposed to stick up on the ends or are they supposed to be flush with the lip of the pan? The original ones were flush. I thought perhaps they would compress into place when all the bolts were tightened. However, the bolts wouldn't even reach. Has anyone ever run across this... MORE

Finished the Midget today and the engine will come out still again. It starts easy, runs nice, and pees oil out the tranny drain hole!!! This time a friend came over and told me to check the back plate for any cracks from the oil pump hole to the cut out for the real oil seal top. He said it has probably been leaking oil from the oil pump, through the crack, to the rear oil seal area, making it LOOK like the rear seal is leaking. If I find a crack on the back plate, I'll eat it!!!... MORE

I am planning to covert to disc brakes on the front of my bugeye. Can anyone tell me which master cylinder to use? I'm looking for something that fits with minimal modifications. Thanks oldcoventrian@... 6149... MORE

Absolutely, Chris! Assuming the set-up was filtered. 30 bucks is nothing in view of Speedwell's "superduper" filtered set-up at 63 bucks. (plus appropriate tax and shipping, of course!) Probably made out of aluminum (or maybe gold!). Then again, what is the cost of unfiltered air entering the engine vs. $75 or so over 20+ years or so? There is "economy" and "false economy". Depends on your point of view I guess!! :) Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 6138... MORE

Hello all, Since last week Ive lifted the engine complete with gearbox. This last week ive opened up the engine (and cried like a baby) Ive decided to have the cylinders bored and honed (too worn out for another option) and the rebuilder will place the pistons with crank. From from then on Im on my own with regard to how I rebuild the engine. I posted a query sometime ago about a fast road engine, but the job of shipping the engine to England and back and the fact that I dont get my fingernails dirty have let... MORE

Hey everyone, I came across what is believed to be a really good deal, and wanted to bounce it off you before going through with it. I can get a good 1500 engine and tranny setup, as well as front and rear axle assemblies with 4 wire wheels for a whopping grand total of just $250.00!!! This is one of those deals that sounds just too good to be true. I haven't seen the merchandise yet, but the owner says the engine ran good when removed a couple of years ago, and the wheels are from a '66. How... MORE

"Spot on", AW! ("It worked for my Dad, it'll work for me"! Yeah, never cared much for recycling crankcase gases back into my beautifully prepared "head" and unleaded octanes being what they are, who needs further "dilution" of same? As David C. has already pointed out, best to direct this stuff into a container with filter set-up, considering this "pipe" will "breath" both ways: "in" on depression and "out" when it's the "other way" 'round! Happy Bird!! :) Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 6123... MORE

Dear lists, Years ago when racing we had a rule about dumping anything on the ground. I took a war surplus aluminum canteen, which came with a fitted matching aluminum cooking pot that the canteen slipped into, I polished both parts, bolted the fitted pot to the wheel well and ran plastic tube from radiator catch tank and from the crankcase and the valve cover into the screw on lid of the now brightly polished canteen. Then run a small tube from the lid, through a foam filter, stuffed into a 35 mm film canister and out under the... MORE

AW- My guess is that all this would do would be to "richen" the mixture a tad, since what is now being inducted dilutes the mixture "charge" somewhat resulting in a "weakening off" of the mixture. This was planned for by the makers in the carb. set-up. You can either "advance" the timing a bit to take advantage of the SLIGHTLY richer mixture (performance) or "weaken" the mixture setting a bit for possibly, a little more "economy". You know, "positive crankcase venting" is not a "bad" idea. It lessens pressures within the crankcase, which is "good' in a lot... MORE

Hi, David. Happy Turkey Day. I agree with your idea on venting the crankcase into a container. "Better" idea than simply venting it wherever. Container will "hold" the "solids/liquids" and keep things cleaner all around. Environmentally, politically correct thing to do these days, anyway. Good idea. Summit advertises such a container (plastic, I bellieve) which comes with a K&N filter on top. Around $30, I believe. I will order one and hook it up. Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 6116... MORE

Today I had to pull the engine out AGAIN. In my attempt to fix the oil leak, I had too much vacuum on the engine and it was sucking the oil into the intake and it looked like I was on fire zipping down the road. I don't know how I didn't get pulled over by the police!!! At the moment, I have removed the rear oil seal kit and back plate, cleaned everything up, and re-installed the parts with a heck of a lot of RTV. This time I plan to just let the crankcase pressure just vent... MORE

Chris, I ran 175s on my 65 Sprite and during the rebuild I noticed some rubbing on the inner wheel well. A Panhard rod would probably solve this, but it might be due to weak rear springs and very old rubber bushing! I never replaced them, might even be original looked pretty bad when I removed them a while back. Polyurethane will go back in. Martyn meastwood1@... "Martyn Eastwood" 6102... MORE

Thank you for the excellent "Frontline" site. Considering their prices on rear leaf springs, this does seem like one of the the places to go in these (and other) respects. At 70USD per spring, that's a lot cheaper than I've seen here in US, even with shipping thrown in. The K-series engine transplant sounds like a great idea for those considering a "new" engine, doesn't it? Even the 120hp conversion is really all a street Sprite would need to go very well, indeed!
