===== John, The studs are 3/8 and very difficult to find outside of the LBC circle. Moss does list them. Front part number 264-095 Peter C "Peter C." 4733... MORE

I am still very much a novice in trying to fix my LBC, a 79 Midget. Last night, while changing a tire, I broke a wheel stud. Where can I get one, Moss does not list them in their catalogue. What is involved in taking out the old one, it broke off even with the hub, and what is involved in putting a new one in? Like I said, I'm pretty new at this and so I'm afraid that I will screw it up and then have the expense of having the car towed to a repair shop. John... MORE

I guess I'll hold off on the wire wheels for a while. My main thing would be to get it running and then work on cleaning it up. The engine is very confusing to me... I bought the Bentley manual but it doesn't quite have the detail I need. I'll look for a Haynes and Chilton book and see if they're clearer. There's some sort of pipe coming down off the rear of the engine that seems loose, and I would just like to make sure everything is hooked up before I put a little fuel in it and... MORE

Have question not sure if I read this here or where I may have read it. But am I correct in saying that before starting a rebuilt egine for the first time one should leave the plugs out and turn the engine over until you get oil pressure and than start it Doug 77 dougp@... 4716... MORE

Thanks Phil. I think I prefer mine green. I don't think it shows the dirt as much but i'll keep the rocker cover Gold You're right about the engine no. Mine starts 8G1. Gary L 1958 Frog "Gary Lazarus" 4714... MORE

Has anyone heard of a 1275cc Midget Goldseal engine being sprayed Gold! or green with a gold rocker cover? My frogeye has the latter. You can see an image of it on the photos section I don't know if that's hoew it came or if the PO sprayed it himself Gary L AN5L(now RHD) "Gary Lazarus" 4712... MORE

Official reconditioned BL engines and gearboxes were sprayed gold, hence the title Goldseal. The engine number was changed to denote a reconditioned unit. Phil 1960 frog philipsteller@... 4713... MORE

Basically just a container (Steel/Aluminium/plastic depending on your taste) that the oil breather lines are routed to that catch all the oil vapour that breathes out of your engine. It is a requirement for competition vehicles (they get a little upset if you dump the contents of your sump on the track!). If you go down this route you will have to block off the connections on your carbs to prevent air leaks. Another point is that by mixing oil vapour with the inlet charge it must have a detremental effect on the octane rating of the inlet charge... MORE

Okay folks, Here's a shot at the engine colors (according to Horler) 948's, 1098's = dark green (aka engine green) 1275's 12CC, 12CD, 12CD, 12CJ engine #s = light green (Oct '66 to Jul '71) 1275 all 12V engine #s = black (Aug '71 to '74) 1500 FP's units= black w/silver valve cover Biff Jones Pasadena, MD '59 Bugeye, "Kermit' '62 Sprite, 'Ole Gray' '71 Midget, 'Freebie' http://sprites2.homestead.com/index.html "Biff Jones" 4699... Stuart I'm fairly sure that late 1275 engines were painted black - this would include the fan pulley... "James Bilsland" 4685... MORE

James- Personally, "no" as to sucking through one or both barrels of a 45DCOE: not to my taste so to speak! :) As for the engine, "no" again, though I've used this carb. successfully on a 1300+ Series A I used to run in my '74 RWA Midget. Basic needle selection for the SU is a matter of getting advice and assistance from those more educated in these matters than I. Fortunately, I have obtained excellent advice from other listers so experienced, both on this and Judson lists, James, the latest being from Dave Munroe in Halifax. This fellow... MORE

Thankyou, Dave Munroe! I here this and recall you have a fuel/ratio meter hookup so assume BBC needle gives you 12.5 or so on acceleration and about 14.1 for cuise? Would you be kind enough to tell me about the camshaft you are running with your set-up? Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 4670... MORE

RH writes: "Startling acceleration with flame coming out the tail" I dunno, Rob! I'm in the cockpit doing the driving! Plenty of flame in the combustion chambers though. But, certainly can't match a "K' motored Spridget, for sure! Cap'n. Bob '61 :{) PilotRob@... 4669... MORE

Surely it was earlier A Series engines (948/1098) which were painted dark green? and early 1275s were light metallic green? James "James Bilsland" 4654... MORE

I had this problem in my Sprite (1275) for years, eventually went away when I changed from carbs with no breather connection (and consequently having to breath into the manifold) to carbs with a breather connection. "Jeremy Cogman" 4640... MORE

Jason I think its black for the engine and unpainted (i.e. bare aluminium casing) for the gearbox - I'm sure I will be corrected if wrong... James "James Bilsland" 4652... MORE

So have you got your new blower engine up and running then Bob? Have you ever considered 'sucking' through one half of a 45 DCOE BTW? would solve the HIF 44 'needle' problems... James "James Bilsland" 4651... MORE

My favourite would still be valve guides - did you get the 'Cooper S' type valve seals (rubber 'hat' as opposed to rubber 'ring'). were the guides replaced when the engine was done? There is obviously a blob of oil getting into the engine somehow - does your breather run into the carbs or manifold? If you set up your breathers so it breathes into a catch tank it might solve your problem? Make sure you seal off the carbs/manifold if you do this... Oil consumption is a bit of a worry - might be guides or just lack... MORE

I have a 948 that I had given to me. I have been asked to part with the head to help out a concours restoration. The problem is, this head has a fitting for the temp gauge. From what I have been reading the last two days, I have one of two options available now. It is a 948 "S" head, or more than likely a 1098 head. Hello everyone Does any one have a picture or even a color sceem of what a 1971 1275cc Midget's engine and transmission would look like? I would like to paint one of my spare motors and display it at a local show. Thanks Jason "Jason Gross" 4649... MORE

Jeremy, sir! "No", the carb does not have to be in the pressurized environment, a "special" type required for aforementioned, "yes". And, "yes", on today's readily available pump octanes it is a "must" to "tailor" the engine "build" for low pressure forced induction or experience "Arnold type" problems with application; you gotta do your "homework", first. And, "yes" the Judson "sucks"! :) But, man, the 6psi boost curve of the 948 applied to the 1275 is "super quick" and high rpm is not required if vehicle properly geared for application. BTDT; it goes like a rocket (relatively speaking, of... MORE

Dave It sounds to me like your engine is sucking air somewhere... (vacuum leak as you indicate) I suggest you check the carb gaskets and that all the breather hoses and vacumm advance pipes are in the correct place. I'd ignore the plugs until you are sure you have a sealed inlet system. It is quite possible that a '67 car would be sold in '68 - they used to sit around at the docks for quite a while... Hi people, Driving in the lovely sunshine at the weekend, I returned to find my brake pedal dripping with brake fluid (I guess from the master cylinder above it). Question is: do I repair the existing master cylinder or should I go for new. Its a 1980 midget 1500. Cheers, Jim. jim.wyper@... 4602... MORE
